I kept rolling on the bed while my legs tangled in the sheets as I twisted again, heart pounding. Every minute that passed felt like a countdown to regret.
I stretched my hand to the side table to grab my phone while looking for the music that suits my mood “The haunting melody filled the room, and I felt my chest slowly rise and fall, syncing with each gentle beat. My eyes fluttered closed — finally, peace.
As I kept on singing to the lyrics, I noticed a loud bang on my door and was wondering who would want to disrupt my quiet time.
Removing my EarPods, I heard Jason constantly banging on my door demanding I should open it immediately. Jason pounded the door like a toddler denied candy. His voice rose, petulant and sharp, making me yank out my EarPods with a groan.
I increased to the highest volume allowing him to rest upon my silence while enjoying my moment before the fake moments came.
I sang so much that I didn't even know that time had passed. I quickly went to check if Jason was standing outside, but I was glad to see he was gone.
Mascara in one hand, towel barely clinging to my body, I darted to the wardrobe. Dresses flew past my hands — too short, too bright, too dull — until my fingers landed on the black maxi gown.
I headed straight to my wardrobe to pick up my black maxi gown my best friend gave me for my birthday.
“I held the gown to my chest, I heard her laugh again in my head — loud, goofy, full of life. “Wear this and steal hearts, babe,” she had said. My throat tightened “ I can't wait to see you and tell you about my roller coaster life,” while I kept applying light touches to my face.
Tying my hair into a bun, I paused — just for a second. It was the same style Mom used to wear. A lump rose in my throat, but I swallowed it down, and for a second, I didn't see myself — I saw her. Her calm smile. Her strength. The room felt less lonely.
I stood up, ready to shake off the mood, while apply my matte red lipstick to brighten up my face.
As I walked down the stairs, I heard Jason talking to someone, which kept me wondering who that was.
His gaze locked onto mine, and the sound of clinking cutlery faded. My heel stuttered on the tile, breath hitching in my throat.
“Finally you are done,” he said sarcastically, which spoiled the mood instantly before noticing a middle-aged woman in our midst.
“Brinda, this is Mrs Agatha, the housekeeper, and she can attend to you with any issue when I'm not around,” he said. Mrs. Agatha nodded politely, but I caught the twitch in her jaw. She smiled through gritted teeth, the way one does with spoiled royalty.
As I was about to speak, Jason cut me off” Mrs Agatha, meet Brinda, our special guest who needs close observation, and you can attend to her minor needs,” while he kept sipping his cup of tea.
I looked at him with so much anger written all over my face, but I still had to compose myself.
“Good evening, Mrs Agatha, and I'm so happy that I finally have company in this house apart from you know who,” I said playfully, which left a small smile on her face.
“You also look so stunning, Ma,” she said, which left my cheeks turning red before she wandered off to her chores.
She came back into the dining room to inform us that the driver had arrived, and I knew the major show has just begun.

We finally arrived at the event, and the hall was filled with so many prestigious people showing off wealth. Champagne glasses clinked, laughter echoed, and I clutched my clutch like it was armor. My smile was tight, my back stiff. Just a role. Just a mask.
“I wish I was in bed watching a romantic movie, but I'm here fake smiling my way into riches,” before Jason's words brought me out of my thoughts.
“Brinda, I need you to put up an act of us being a lovely couple, and I would handle all the talking. I hope you understand?” he said with a quick tone, but I just kept glaring at him like he was nuts, which I knew fueled his anger.
“Don't leave this spot,” he said before running off to meet with some wealthy colleagues, who could feel my palms sweaty.
“Who does he think he is? Trying to control my movement when he goes out having fun… Well, I don't play that game,” I said in a quick, annoyed tone before heading to the wine section.
“Good evening, Ma’am, and welcome to the LA VA event centre, What would you like to drink?” The barman said, but my eyes were just lost in his body.
“Um madam," he said again before I remembered where I was, which left me feeling embarrassed.
“I would have two glasses of merlot wine with a cherry pop on top,” which he hesitated, brows lifting in amusement before he turned to fill the order. His smirk said it all.
I was halfway through my second glass when I noticed the sudden shift — the murmurs, the frozen expressions, the gasps. Then, the speaker cracked… and hell broke loose.
The chatters died. Forks froze mid-air. I blinked twice, the speaker’s static buzz still ringing in my ear. No, this was real. Too real.
“How could he stoop so low, even in such a prestigious event? “HOW?!”
I stormed through the crowd, bottling up the words I would say to him, when I spotted him running off the stage.
I immediately followed him, hoping to give him a piece of my mind, “I know we are not a couple, but for dragging me down his horrific lane. He's going to get what's coming to him,” when I spotted him in a corner making a strange call.
I hid in a spot to get a better angle of what the call was about when I heard him say, “I need you to end a particular lady for me without traces.”
My spine turned to ice — I couldn't believe what I was hearing” Who the hell are you, Mr. Jason?”
Love you all 😩😘
Jason P.O.V My phone vibrated violently, the screen lighting up with a number I didn’t recognize. But I didn’t think twice.“Hello?” I rasped, my voice hoarse. On the other end, there was only heavy, broken breathing, frantic and shallow. My stomach twisted. My chest felt like it had been ripped open. That breathing… it sounded like hers. Brinda’s.“Brinda?” I shouted, my voice cracking. “Brinda! Answer me!”Nothing but the same ragged inhale. Panic surged. I couldn’t wait. I didn’t even ask questions. I traced the call immediately. The location pinged, just a few streets away.I bolted out the door and my hand gripping the wheel like my life depended on it. It did. My mind raced. “She can't be gone. She can't… I can't lose her. Not now. Not ever.”Every red light I passed felt like torture. My eyes darted everywhere, scanning the streets. Every corner I turned, every shadow… my chest tightened. “Is she there? Is someone hurting her? Finally, I skidded into the location. My heart st
Brinda's P.O.V “Sofie, are we done packing?!” I shouted, my voice bouncing off the walls, half excited, half in disbelief. From the bathroom, Sofie yelled back, “Yes, girl! Finally! All the clothes, baby stuff, your documents—everything! Even that ridiculous pile of shoes you insisted on bringing!”I let out a breathy laugh while brushing my teeth. “That wasn’t ridiculous. That was emotional support footwear.” I said. She stepped in, hands on her waist, shaking her head dramatically. “You and your excuses. Brinda, I swear, one day I’ll write a book about you.” while I smiled softly. If only she knew how close to breaking I was inside.Sofie dropped beside me, nudging my shoulder. “But seriously… we did it. You’re really about to start over.”I swallowed.Start over. Those words hit deeper than she knew.I placed my hand over my belly, rubbing slow circles. “Yeah… start over.”She stood up suddenly like she remembered something. “Oh! I almost forgot. I’m heading to the mall to grab
Jason P.O.V I checked the wall clock for the fifth time in ten minutes.7:48 p.m.I exhaled slowly.“She should have been home by now…”Mrs. Abigail was arranging the plates on the dining table, moving back and forth like everything was normal. The food was already plated. The candles were lit. Even the stupid soft music was playing in the background.Everything was ready.Except Brinda.I pulled out my phone again and stared at her contact.Still no missed calls.Still no message.I typed.“Where are you.”Sent.I waited.Nothing.I locked my phone and leaned back on the couch, rubbing my palms together. I didn’t know why my chest felt tight. I tried to tell myself she was probably stuck in traffic. Or maybe she stopped somewhere. But something didn’t feel right.Mrs. Abigail turned to look at me.“Sir… should I keep the food warm?”“Yes,” I replied quickly. “She’ll be here soon.”I wasn’t sure who I was reassuring — her or myself.Mrs. Abigail nodded and walked back into the kitche
Brinda's P.O.V The car was too quiet. Not the peaceful kind. The dangerous kind.Nathan’s hands were steady on the steering wheel, eyes fixed on the road like nothing in this world could distract him. Meanwhile, my heart was beating like it wanted to jump out of my chest and run before me.“Think, Brinda. Think fast before things get worse.” I wandered. Every second that passed felt like borrowed time.I folded my hands on my lap, fingers trembling despite my effort to stay calm. My phone was buried inside my bag, screen off, silent—but I could almost feel it burning against my skin.“You’ve been quiet,” Nathan said while clearing his throat. I forced a small laugh. “Should I be talking?”He glanced at me briefly, then back to the road. “You always talk to me Brinda. What's change.” He added. “Nothing has changed Nathan, all I just need is my space beside I love my new quiet Era.”I said. “Is there something you want to talk about.” Nathan asked. My chest tightened.“That was adr
Jason P.O.V I had never felt happiness like this. Not in years. My chest felt tight, my face hurt from smiling too much, and yet… I couldn’t stop. Brinda was coming home. She was really coming back. Alive. Safe. My world suddenly had color again.I paced around the living room like a man who had been holding his breath for a decade. My phone was still in my hand, but I didn’t care about calls or messages. Nothing mattered except the thought of her walking through that door.“Mrs. Abigail!” I called, my voice louder than I intended. She appeared, hands still dusted with flour, eyes wide. “Yes, sir?”“She’s coming back,” I said quickly, almost too loudly. “Brinda… she’s coming home.”Her lips parted, and for a moment I thought she would faint from relief. “Oh, Lord… she’s finally coming back to us?”“Yes!” I said, grinning like a kid who just stole candy. “Alive. Safe. And she’s coming home. Can you believe it?”Mrs. Abigail’s eyes glimmered with something I couldn’t read. Joy? Relief?
Brinda's P.O.VThe hall smelled of disinfectant and impatience.I stared as people sat in rows, some whispering, some scrolling endlessly on their phones, others staring straight ahead like they were afraid to blink and miss their names being called. My palms were damp, my fingers curled tightly around my documents like someone might snatch my future away if I loosened my grip. This was it.No turning back. When my name was called, my heart jumped violently against my chest. I stood up slowly, my legs feeling strangely light and heavy at the same time, and followed the officer behind the glass door.Biometrics.Fingerprints.Photograph.Short instructions delivered with no emotion.I did everything they asked, nodding, responding when necessary, my mind barely catching up with my body. I kept telling myself to breathe. Just breathe. One step at a time. When it was over, I was asked to sit again.Minutes felt like hours. Then my name was called… again. This time, the officer slid a pa
Jason P.O.V I stared at nature at my balcony while taking a cup of coffee and trying to remove what I witnessed yesterday but all manner of forgetting it just kept failing. I received a message from my PR which kept me wondering what could he the cause. “Sir, your presence is needed urgently.” I
Brinda's P.O.V Jason walked in on Nathan confessing how much he loved which left me shocked. “Urmm… Jason, you are here.” I said. Which he left me on mute. I could literally feel the tension in the room and was wondering what I would do to escape. “Nathan, I am glad that you finally woke up whe
Brinda's P.O.V I stepped in hoping that I would be the only one at home but the sound of the television made me lose all hope immediately.I knew facing Jason was not on my agenda today but I knew it was now or never. I walked towards to living room to see him drinking a glass of wine while watch
