Chapter 3

Author: Myosotis
Two days passed quickly.

At dawn, Maya came in person to see me off in the underground garage beneath the Ravenwood packhouse.

Three black SUVs waited by the elevator, their windows tinted, the Moon Council’s crest printed on the doors. Once I stepped into the lead SUV, Ravenwood would have officially honored the pact, and I would leave for the North as Frostfang’s future Luna.

Maya adjusted the collar of my white wool coat with red eyes. “I still hate letting you go.”

I held her hand. “Don’t cry. Leaving a man who isn’t worth it isn’t exile. It’s rebirth.”

Maya sniffed and tried to look fierce. “Fine. After you leave, I’m going to give that happy couple a wedding gift they’ll never forget.”

I smiled and got into the car.

When the convoy pulled out of the garage and turned onto Ravenwood’s main avenue, Kyle’s wedding motorcade happened to approach from the other end.

He wore a black tailored suit with the Ravenwood wolf crest pinned over his heart. Cameras flashed outside the packhouse entrance, and pack members crowded behind the security line to watch their Alpha announce a Luna.

Kyle opened the car door for Lila and helped her out with such care it looked as if he was afraid the wind might break her.

“Slowly,” he murmured. “Watch your head.”

In our last life, he had helped me the same way.

He had lifted me onto the back of his motorcycle after our marking ceremony, helmet in hand, laughing softly against my ear. “Alia, if you hit your head, my heart will hurt to death.”

Now he gave the exact same tenderness to someone else.

I watched him through the tinted window and felt less pain than I expected. Maybe true resolve is seeing him be good to another woman and no longer wanting to ask why.

A gust of wind lifted Lila’s silver veil near the car door. Kyle seemed to sense something and suddenly looked toward my SUV.

For one second, our eyes met through the dark glass. He couldn’t possibly see me clearly, but unease still flickered across his face.

Then Lila tugged his sleeve. “Kyle, everyone is waiting.”

Kyle looked away and muttered as if mocking himself, “It can’t be her. Alia is Blackthorn’s eldest daughter. She wouldn’t go to Frostfang.”

I rested my hand on the window. “Then I wish us both a life where we never meet again and both live well.”

The wedding motorcade and the Frostfang alliance convoy passed each other.

I didn’t look back.

Inside the Ravenwood packhouse, the ceremony hall was packed.

Kyle led Lila onto the stage beneath the huge silver moon emblem, but unease kept pressing against his chest. He looked toward the door more than once, as if waiting for someone who would never come.

Before the vow announcement began, he finally called over his Beta.

“Find out where Alia is today. Did she come to watch the ceremony?”

His guard froze. “Alpha, you don’t know? Miss Alia took Miss Lila’s place. She has left for Frostfang Pack to honor the alliance pact.”

“The black SUV that passed your wedding motorcade just now. She was inside it.”

Kyle was taken away by the Moon Council. He had attacked an alliance convoy, trespassed into Frostfang territory, and admitted he drugged his own fated mate with a witch’s potion. To protect Ravenwood, the elders suspended his Alpha authority, and the Council opened a formal investigation into his fitness to lead.Lila didn’t escape either. Without Kyle’s protection, and after investigators found she had tried to fake testimony for a mate contract, Blackthorn sent her to border service for labor duty. She escaped Frostfang, but still lost the place she had tried so hard to steal. The news reached me in Frostfang’s greenhouse.Rowan stood at the door with a coat in his hands. “It’s snowing outside.”“I’m not cold.”“I am.”I turned to look at him.The great Frostfang Alpha added without changing expression, “So I’d like to borrow my future Luna’s fire for a while.”I laughed despite myself. That night, Rowan lit the northern moonfire for me on the training grounds. It wasn’t Kyle’s dazz

The next day, I ran into Kyle at the Frostfang downtown market. He stood at the street corner I had to pass, much thinner than before. Stubble shadowed his jaw. The proud Alpha I once knew looked as if a blizzard had stripped every bit of shine from him.Still, when he saw me, his eyes lit. “Alia, I found the antidote.”He came toward me in quick steps and pulled a small bottle from his coat.“Drink it, and you’ll remember everything about us. We loved each other so much in our last life. You won’t have the heart to forget that. Once you remember, you’ll know where you truly belong.”I looked at the bottle and almost laughed. Even now, he still thought the problem was that I had forgotten, as if memory would turn me back into the Alia who loved him without conditions.I took the bottle.Kyle held his breath, hope written all over his face.“I’ll drink it,” I said. “But not for you.”I pulled the stopper and poured the bitter liquid into my mouth. No memories surged. No pain split my he

Frostfang security surged forward.Kyle was a powerful Alpha, but he was alone, reckless, and still dressed for a ceremony, not a fight. It didn’t take long for them to force him away from the car. One guard swept his leg out from under him with a silver baton, and Kyle dropped to one knee on the icy road, blood at the corner of his mouth. He still stared at me. “Alia, wait for me. I’ll find a way to make you remember. Even if it costs my life, I’ll bring you home.”Rowan opened the door, stepped in, and raised a hand to block my view. “Don’t look.”I looked up at him instead. He was younger than the rumors made him sound, and far more beautiful than they had any right to hide. There was no sickness in his golden eyes, only restrained sharpness and control. When the convoy started moving again, I finally asked, “Aren’t you supposed to be too ill to hold your wolf form?”Rowan paused, then smiled. “Disappointed?”“Why would I be?”“A lot of people were only willing to send daughters the

All color drained from Kyle’s face.He let go of Lila’s hand and nearly stumbled in front of the entire pack.“Impossible.” His voice shook. “She loves me. How could she go to Frostfang?”The ceremony hall erupted into whispers.Lila grabbed his sleeve in a panic. “Kyle, the announcement is about to start. Don’t scare me.”Kyle didn’t seem to hear her. He turned and was about to rush off the stage. At that moment, Maya walked in with Moon Council security. Two men in black suits blocked the exits. Maya stopped at the foot of the stage. “Now you want to chase her?”Kyle stared at her. “Why did she go? Who allowed her to go?”Maya gave a sharp laugh. “You protected Lila and helped her escape the pact. Ravenwood still had to send a daughter from the Blackthorn line. If Alia didn’t go, should we have sent the precious Lila you were trying so hard to keep alive?”Kyle’s lips trembled.Maya went on. “And the witch’s potion you drugged Alia with? She knew. That forgetting potion has no real a

Not long after Kyle left, Maya Stone arrived. She was a record keeper sent by the Moon Council to Ravenwood Pack, and one of the few true friends I had. The moment she stepped inside, she pulled me into her arms, furious enough for her eyes to flash wolf-gold.“Alia, have you heard? Kyle is really going through with the mate contract with Lila. Last life, he would’ve died for you. This life, did a rogue bite the sense out of him?”I placed the moonstone ring on the table.Gray liquid still shimmered in the hidden groove. Maya caught the scent and her face changed at once. “A witch’s forgetting potion?”I nodded and told her everything I had overheard.Maya slammed her palm on the table. “Bastard. He wants to save Lila, so he wipes you out? Does he even know that potion can’t be undone? If you had really drunk it, every memory and pull tied to your mate would be stripped clean.”“He doesn’t care,” I said. “He just thinks I’ll always stand where he left me.”Maya fell silent. After a lon
