"What's that, doggy? Are you trying to say something?" He asked, purposely refusing to understand what my body language was clearly conveying. I shouldn't humiliate myself by returning to my naked for in front of this strange man. If the Alpha saw something like that I'd would be sent packing in moments. He raised his eyebrows in expectation and I could see he was attempting to suppress a smile beneath his thin mustache. He put his pale hand onto my head and pet me like a dog.
"Get along now then if you have nothing to say."
As glad as I was to be free of him I could have torn his head off for the way he spoke to me. I hope a Luna is never expected to be humble enough to endure someone speaking to her in such a way. I rushed back to the failing birthday party hoping that if could far enough away that I could outrun the embaressment of the last five minutes.
"Where have you been?" scolded Oakly, "And what happened to your clothes? Do you think this pack wants a Luna who skirts her duties to hang lazily around the estate wearing nothing, but rags?" Oakly had managed to change her own luck a little bit and was showing a couple of pups how to string beads into their own bracelets. I had managed to tie enough pieces of my clothing together that everything important was covered. In lycanthrop culture wardrobe malfunctions such as these were not a very unusual occurrance.
"I think it's kind of punk." spoke a powerful voice from behind me. I turned to face the towering figure of the Alpha himself. I barely reached the height of his glistening bronze shoulders and Oakly and I both stood there gawking. In his musceled arms he held Eli, my least favorite pup.
"I heard you met my brother Eli," Alpha Berion shook his head in annoyance at his little brother, "He's always been a trouble maker. Youngest children. You can't take them anywhere."
"Yes," I said trying to regain my common sense and stop staring at the way his biceps moved when he held the squirming pup, "I have a little brother too myself."
"Oh good, so you understand." Alpha said in relief, "Still I'm sorry about your clothes, punk as your new way of wearing them might be. Of course I will replace them so don't worry."
At this point Oakly was positively green with envy; her lips pursed as she tried to find the words that might turn this situation to her favor, but she came up empty.
"Thank you. You are generous." I replied and bowed my head in a sign of respect and submission towards my Alpha.
"Don't Thank me. It is my pleasure to take care of all the lovely we are hosting..." he gave Oakly a stern look, "be they pure of heart."
My head still lowered I was beaming by the time he left to entertain more of his guests.
"Oh I bet you feel sooo smug, don't you," Oakly said the moment the Alpha looked to be out of earshot, "I hope you know that you of all people are far from pure of heart. Why you're not even pure of family. Have you told him about your father? That humoring you would be giving power to a treasoness line of wolves?"
"I have no father," I replied defiantly, "What's there to tell? These things can't weigh on those who are pure of heart." I said in my softest most innocent voice I could muster. I began dutifully going around picking up discarded paper plates and plastic cups that were scattered about the grass while Oakly stood there positively seething at the injustice of it all.
"Nice save, Elma" said Jules holding out a plastic trashbag for me to throw it all in. She was another wolf with and interesting hair pattern, a mix of deep and redish browns.
"You weren't half bad yourself" I replied.
"Yeah, I almost got the pin the tail on the wolf game back up and running by substituting the tail with a saftey pin I had on me and a bunch of leaves."
"Innovative" I remarked. Was a Luna supposed to be innovative? My mom hadn't mentioned that one.
"Yes, well it only lasted one round before the pups thought it made the wolf look like it was pooping and they spent the rest of the time rolling around laughting until they cried."
"That's pups for you." I said heading back to the cabins with Jules trailing along beside me.
"Have you always wanted pups?" Jules asked getting thoughtful as we walked. Truthfully even at the age of twenty four I had always avoided thinking about it too much. Yes usually all wolves are expected to breed and it is a sign of status to be able to produce many healthy pups, but I knew that if I did they would be born cursed because they were connected to my family. Surely they would be sent to die on the battlefield for their grandfathers crimes and their connection to me would bring nothing but pain.
"It's one of the most important jobs of a Luna," I repeated that the Luna mother had told us earlier. Maybe if I became the Luna I could have pups that would live in safety and comfort.
"Mmhmm" Jules nodded deep in thought as we walked the rest of the way in silence. We both knew I had not really answered the question.
Before I could process what I was doing I had pushed him away so hard that my chair toppled over spilling me out onto the floor. The crash immediately brought all attention onto us and I could feel my face heating with embarrassment. I looked up at the offending wolf and saw blood trickling down his shoulders. My hands must have taken the form of razor sharp claws as I pushed him away in anger, easily tearing through his skin. I didn't know what to do but I couldn't stay here on the floor with everyone's eyes on me. A waitress held out her hand to me and I took it, rising to my feet. "Quick thinking, ma'am," she said looking at me with clever grey eyes, "He almost bit you.""Yes. Thank you," I said breathlessly. I think my heart might beat straight out of my chest. "She attacked me!" Boison exclaimed noticing the blood dripping down his arm and putting his hand over it to staunch the bleeding. "Relax," said another commanding voice. All heads swiveled over to the Vampire King, "It'
I almost wish I hadn't worn my new blue dress this afternoon because I can't possibly one up it at dinner. In lue of that I went with a long skin thight black dress I deemed both elegant and sexy. Dani wore blue. In fact, I've never seen her wear the cheerfull yellow that her name suggests. We walked together to the door of the mansion where a guard stood at attention to greet us. The wolves in waiting pulled open the heavy doors for us and the guard announced loudly,"From Cabin B, Elma and Dandilion!"A massive dining table had been brought out turning the throne room into a very fancy dining room. Dani and I were lead to our seats where I quickly scanned the other particapants at the table. The first thing I noticed was that I had the great misfortune of being sat directly next to the Alpha's second cousin. His place tag read the name Boison. I also noticed Oakly had not yet been sent home. Damn. Luckily Rayven and Jules were still in attendence along with another seven wolves who
"The dress looks perfect on you," the Alpha remarked, "I hope you don't mind me saying that I have amazing taste." I chuckled a little. "You are too generous, Alpha. You have spoiled me." "I'd like all my guests to feel that way." I frowned, I didn't want to talk about all those other wolves fighting for his affection. "Your grandparents. They were... charming. An intriguing bunch, they carry much wisdom.""Intriguing is the word for it alright. They'd be more charming if they stopped bickering all the time. If you can put up with them then you can put up with anything." "I imagine they all used to be very different wolves once.""You would be correct. Grandfather Walter used to be the Alpha once, he's the one who can't speak,"I nodded for him to continue. "His time was one of great unrest as I've heard it told. One day when he was out on a hunt with only a few of his closest warriors he was ambushed and surrounded by the enemy. He knew they would be able to fight them all off
Another grandparent type wolf stood at the door, her blank eyes a ghostly white. I stood up quickly, but the wolf across from me looked a little disappointed at the interruption. "We are ready for you now," she croaked."Thankyou ma'am," I said and left the room without another glance at the Alpha's treacherous second cousin. I followed my blind guide a couple more yards down the hall until we entered a slightly bigger office with a table in it not unlike a conference room. How the blind wolf knew this was the right place was beyond my understanding. The blind wolf and I took our seats at the table where three other old wolves sat already. These must be the all of the Alpha's grandparents. "Introduce yourself she-wolf," demanded the elder that had led Rayven inside earlier."My name is Elma," I stated shortly. Customarily a wolf would follow this with a family name or pack name, but I decided to keep mine short. A moment of silence."What did she say?" asked one of the wolves who in
I have a lot of respect for elderly wolves for their wisdom and experience, but damn, they are not fast. It feels like the first wolf who got called in for an interview with the Alpha's grandparents started hours ago but we are still only a couple wolves in with what must be twenty more to go. I sat on a bench kicking my feet and watching varius servants hurry by. I might rather be one of them right now because at least I would have something to do besides sit here in my growing pool of stress."They must have a lot to say in there." Rayven commented from beside me, "That's good because we'll each get our fair shot and won't be hurried out or anything.""What do you think they're talking about?" I asked absentmindedly. I hoped none of the first suitors chosen do so well that I am hardly given time of day."Probably the war? What else to elderly folks talk about? The war or other old wolves." "Shush, don't call them old. We're trying to make a good impression here." I shook my head di
The next two days passed in a blur as the she-wolves recovered from the first challenge. Notably we were down a few in number who hadn't fared well in the birthday party challenge and even one wolf who found her fated mate in a palace servant and they had reportedly ran away together. Good for them. I spent my days practicing, training, and trying to learn everything I could about pack politics and the Alpha I sought to impress. He had a charming personality and when he wasn't talking and checking in with all of people living on his grounds he liked song and dance. He kept his mother close along with the strange gentleman I had smashed into at the first challenge. I hoped I wouldn't have to spend much time with that unsavory character if I won the title of Luna. I had almost forgotten about the Alpha's previous promise until one day when I discovered a package laying on my bedspread. "Did you put this here?" I asked Dandilion. My roommate had been particularly dreamy and lost in her
