Elara’s phone buzzed on the nightstand. She grabbed it, hoping it was finally him. It was their three-year anniversary, and she hadn't heard a word from Alexander all day.

The message was from an unknown number. It was just an address: [The Grand Vanguard Hotel. Ball room]

"A surprise," Elara whispered. Her heart was thumping. "He didn't forget."

Without a second thought, she rushed to the shower. Alexander was the perfect boyfriend. He had been her senior in college, and even though they lost touch, he had searched for her years later just to ask her out.

Since then, he had been the most romantic man she’d ever known. He always remembered the little things and showered her with gifts.

As she washed her hair, a huge thought hit her: 'Is he going to propose?'

She jumped out and put on a white dress she had been hiding in the back of her closet. She had bought it specifically for this moment. It was the dress she wanted to be wearing when he asked her to be his wife.

When she arrived at the hotel, her jaw dropped. The entrance was packed. There were luxury cars, red carpets, and photographers everywhere.

'Is this all for us?'she wondered. 'Did he throw a massive party to tell the world he’s marrying me?'

She walked up to the heavy glass doors. A large security guard stood there with a guest list.

"Name?" he asked.

"Elara Smith," she said, her voice shaking with excitement.

The guard looked at his list. He looked again. He frowned and shook his head. "You’re not on here."

Elara’s smile fell. "There’s a mistake. I’m with Alexander Sterling. He’s the one hosting this, right?"

"Mr. Sterling is inside," the guard said coldly. "But your name isn't on the list."

"Can you just call him?" Elara begged. "Tell him Elara is here. He probably just forgot to add my name."

"I can’t call him, and I won't," the guard snapped, stepping in her way. "If you don't have an invite, you need to leave. You're blocking the real guests."

Through the glass doors, a tall figure moved past the lobby. Elara froze. It was him. Even from a distance, she knew the sharp line of his jaw and the way he carried himself.

"Alexander!" she screamed.

The security guard grabbed her arm. "Ma’am, keep it down or I’ll have to remove you."

"Alexander! Alex!" she yelled again, louder this time, her voice echoing off the marble walls.

The man inside stopped. He turned, his eyes searching the crowd until they landed on her. For a split second, a flash of fear crossed his face. He held a glass of dark wine in one hand, looking every bit like the powerful CEO he had become.

He was strikingly handsome, with dark, neatly styled hair and deep eyes that usually warmed when they saw her. He was tall, filling out his expensive black suit perfectly, looking like he belonged in a magazine.

"Elara?" he called out, his voice low.

The guard immediately let go of her arm. Elara didn't wait. She burst through the doors and ran toward him, her white dress fluttering. She reached him and threw her arms around his neck, her face glowing.

"I thought I had the wrong place for a second!" she laughed, squeezing him tight.

Alexander didn't hug her back. Instead, he pushed her off and stepped back, creating a gap between them.

"What are you doing here, Elara?" he asked. His voice wasn't the usually honey velvet she knew, it was hoarse and harsh.

Elara’s smile faltered. "What do you mean? You sent me the address. I thought... I thought this was for our anniversary."

She started to reach for him again, but her head whipped around when a shrill, familiar voice pierced the air.

"Baby! There you are!"

Elara froze. She knew that voice. It belonged to Vivienne, her best friend since college. Vivienne was walking toward them, dressed in full designer.

"Baby?" Elara spat the word like it was poison. She looked at Alexander. Her heart was hammering against her ribs. "What is going on, Alex?"

Alexander didn't look her in the eye. He stared at his drink. "I think you should go," he said quietly.

Vivienne stepped up beside him. She looked at Elara with a fake, pitying smile. "Didn't you hear him, Elara? You should leave."

The room went quiet. The wealthy guests paused their conversations.

There were whispers all over the room as people turned to stare. Elara felt the heat of a hundred eyes on her. She ignored them and stepped closer to Vivienne, her voice trembling with rage. "Vivi, what the fuck is happening here?"

Vivienne didn't flinch. She took a slow sip of her champagne and looked Elara up and down. "What’s happening is that you showed up to my birthday party wearing white. Why do you always have to be the center of attention, Elara? Is being a 'friend' not enough for you? You have to try and outshine the birthday girl, too?"

Elara gasped, her head spinning. "Your birthday? Alexander, tell her. Tell her we’ve been together for three years! Tell her why I'm really here!"

Alexander finally looked up, but there was no love in his eyes. Only a cold, distant stranger. "Go home, Elara," he repeated. "You’re making a scene."

Elara pulled her car into the drop-off lane and The Sterling Academy. It was the most prestigious school in the district—safest, most advanced. The irony burned. The only thing that made her feel better was that it was managed by Evelyn, Alexander's mother. "Okay, my little lions," Elara said, turning around to face the backseat.Leo was already adjusting his tiny blazer, looking exactly like a miniature version of Alexander. Lyra, meanwhile, was busy stuffing a drawing into her backpack."Mom, do I have to go? I wanted to finish my painting," Lyra pouted, her big eyes searching Elara's."You can finish it in art class, Lyra," Elara smiled, reaching back to tuck a stray hair behind her daughter's ear. "Think of all the new friends you'll make. And Leo, remember what we talked about?""Protect Lyra, don't talk to strangers, and do my math first," Leo recited with a serious nod.Elara’s heart squeezed. He was so much like Alexander it was terrifying—the same focus, the same protective

Alexander felt like he was about to throw up. He couldn't have Ethan anywhere near his Elara."You know what," he said, his voice strained. "I think I’ll pass. The deal is dead."Everyone in the room mirrored Elara’s expression of pure exasperation. Without another word, Alex turned on his heel and walked out of the conference room.Elara didn't hesitate. She followed him out, her heels clicking aggressively against the floor. "Are you fucking insane?" she asked loudly. The entire executive floor stopped to stare.Alexander didn't answer until he reached his office. He grabbed her by the arm, pulled her inside, and slammed the door shut. He inhaled deeply, trying to steady his racing heart."So let me get this straight," he said, pacing the room like a caged animal. "Alistair is your brother. And Ethan is the man you're currently seeing."Elara was shocked. He knew Ethan? But how? "It's none of your business," she snapped, crossing her arms over her chest. He stopped pacing and ran a

"Sister?" Alex asked, his voice cracking as he stood there completely flabbergasted. "I didn't know—" He trailed off, looking between them as the gears finally turned. "Wait, Lara... is he...?"Elara nodded, her expression weary under the weight of the lobby's gaze. "He’s my brother. Alistair Vance.""So," Alex continued, his brain still struggling to catch up, "you guys are...""Siblings," Elara completed the sentence sharply. "Now, can we go home?"Alex’s eyes widened further as a memory clicked into place. "That's why Lyra called him uncle. That means..." He stepped closer, his voice dropping to a low, urgent whisper that ignored the crowd. "That means you found your mum? You found your family?"By now, Elara was fed up with the interrogation. The vulnerability of her past was being picked apart in a room full of strangers. "I think we're ready to leave now," she said, her voice hard."Wait," Alex said, reaching out instinctively. "I—I just—""You have no right to ask me things abo

Elara pulled up to her estate gate, already exhausted from the emotional whiplash of the day. But the security guard stepped out of the booth, looking overwhelmed. "Ma'am, we have a... situation. These were delivered for you an hour ago."Behind the gate sat ten massive bouquets, each packed so tightly with tulips that they looked like solid walls of color. Ten bouquets, a thousand tulips each. Ten thousand flowers sat there, glowing under the streetlights. Elara reached out and pulled the small, cream-colored card from the nearest one."I'll love you a thousand times over. ~Love, Alex."Elara started coughing uncontrollably, the sheer audacity of the gesture hitting her like a physical blow. She clutched the card, her eyes watering. 'Ten thousand tulips? So now remembers?' "Ma'am? Where do you want them?" the guard asked, scratching his head.Elara tucked the card back into the petals and straightened her back, her face hardening into a mask of indifference. "Toss them," she said co

Vivienne let out a laugh that sounded like glass breaking. "By the way, how’s your husband? Or boyfriend?" she asked, leaning back into the velvet cushions. "I honestly don't know who is who anymore. You seem to have so many men in your rotation, Lara."Elara summoned every bit of self-control she had left. Her fingers were still digging into her palms. 'Are Alex and his little whore obsessed with me?' she wondered. It felt like they were both constantly trying to trip her up, to make her look like the villain.Elara inhaled deeply, refusing to give Vivienne the satisfaction of a shouting match. She turned her head away from the snake on the sofa and looked directly at Evelyn. "I think that’s enough shopping for today, Auntie. I really need to get back to work. There are files I need to finish."She saw Vivienne’s smug expression out of the corner of her eye. Vivienne thought she had won. She thought she had embarrassed Elara in front of the one woman whose opinion still mattered to h

Monday morning was a blur of spreadsheets and legal documents. Elara was so deep into her work that she didn't even notice her office door creak open."Can I come in?"The voice was soft, elegant, and instantly recognizable. Elara looked up and froze. Standing there was Evelyn Sterling—Alexander’s mother."Umm..." Elara stammered, her hands hovering over her keyboard. She didn't know what to say."I heard my sweet girl was back," Evelyn said, walking into the room with a graceful smile. "I had to come and verify that information for myself."Looking at her, Elara felt a sharp pain in her chest. Back in college, Eve had been the closest thing to a mother she ever had. Evelyn had loved her like her own child, protecting her and cheering her on when Elara had no one.But as Elara looked into those kind eyes, her heart felt like it was bleeding. This woman was a Sterling. She was part of the family that had destroyed Elara's father and stolen their legacy. The guilt of what she was plann

"I'm so sorry, Ethan," Elara said, her face flushing with embarrassment as she grabbed her clutch."It’s no problem, Lara," Ethan replied with a calm, easy smile.
