Elara’s phone buzzed on the nightstand. She grabbed it, hoping it was finally him. It was their three-year anniversary, and she hadn't heard a word from Alexander all day.

The message was from an unknown number. It was just an address: [The Grand Vanguard Hotel. Ball room]

"A surprise," Elara whispered. Her heart was thumping. "He didn't forget."

Without a second thought, she rushed to the shower. Alexander was the perfect boyfriend. He had been her senior in college, and even though they lost touch, he had searched for her years later just to ask her out.

Since then, he had been the most romantic man she’d ever known. He always remembered the little things and showered her with gifts.

As she washed her hair, a huge thought hit her: 'Is he going to propose?'

She jumped out and put on a white dress she had been hiding in the back of her closet. She had bought it specifically for this moment. It was the dress she wanted to be wearing when he asked her to be his wife.

When she arrived at the hotel, her jaw dropped. The entrance was packed. There were luxury cars, red carpets, and photographers everywhere.

'Is this all for us?'she wondered. 'Did he throw a massive party to tell the world he’s marrying me?'

She walked up to the heavy glass doors. A large security guard stood there with a guest list.

"Name?" he asked.

"Elara Smith," she said, her voice shaking with excitement.

The guard looked at his list. He looked again. He frowned and shook his head. "You’re not on here."

Elara’s smile fell. "There’s a mistake. I’m with Alexander Sterling. He’s the one hosting this, right?"

"Mr. Sterling is inside," the guard said coldly. "But your name isn't on the list."

"Can you just call him?" Elara begged. "Tell him Elara is here. He probably just forgot to add my name."

"I can’t call him, and I won't," the guard snapped, stepping in her way. "If you don't have an invite, you need to leave. You're blocking the real guests."

Through the glass doors, a tall figure moved past the lobby. Elara froze. It was him. Even from a distance, she knew the sharp line of his jaw and the way he carried himself.

"Alexander!" she screamed.

The security guard grabbed her arm. "Ma’am, keep it down or I’ll have to remove you."

"Alexander! Alex!" she yelled again, louder this time, her voice echoing off the marble walls.

The man inside stopped. He turned, his eyes searching the crowd until they landed on her. For a split second, a flash of fear crossed his face. He held a glass of dark wine in one hand, looking every bit like the powerful CEO he had become.

He was strikingly handsome, with dark, neatly styled hair and deep eyes that usually warmed when they saw her. He was tall, filling out his expensive black suit perfectly, looking like he belonged in a magazine.

"Elara?" he called out, his voice low.

The guard immediately let go of her arm. Elara didn't wait. She burst through the doors and ran toward him, her white dress fluttering. She reached him and threw her arms around his neck, her face glowing.

"I thought I had the wrong place for a second!" she laughed, squeezing him tight.

Alexander didn't hug her back. Instead, he pushed her off and stepped back, creating a gap between them.

"What are you doing here, Elara?" he asked. His voice wasn't the usually honey velvet she knew, it was hoarse and harsh.

Elara’s smile faltered. "What do you mean? You sent me the address. I thought... I thought this was for our anniversary."

She started to reach for him again, but her head whipped around when a shrill, familiar voice pierced the air.

"Baby! There you are!"

Elara froze. She knew that voice. It belonged to Vivienne, her best friend since college. Vivienne was walking toward them, dressed in full designer.

"Baby?" Elara spat the word like it was poison. She looked at Alexander. Her heart was hammering against her ribs. "What is going on, Alex?"

Alexander didn't look her in the eye. He stared at his drink. "I think you should go," he said quietly.

Vivienne stepped up beside him. She looked at Elara with a fake, pitying smile. "Didn't you hear him, Elara? You should leave."

The room went quiet. The wealthy guests paused their conversations.

There were whispers all over the room as people turned to stare. Elara felt the heat of a hundred eyes on her. She ignored them and stepped closer to Vivienne, her voice trembling with rage. "Vivi, what the fuck is happening here?"

Vivienne didn't flinch. She took a slow sip of her champagne and looked Elara up and down. "What’s happening is that you showed up to my birthday party wearing white. Why do you always have to be the center of attention, Elara? Is being a 'friend' not enough for you? You have to try and outshine the birthday girl, too?"

Elara gasped, her head spinning. "Your birthday? Alexander, tell her. Tell her we’ve been together for three years! Tell her why I'm really here!"

Alexander finally looked up, but there was no love in his eyes. Only a cold, distant stranger. "Go home, Elara," he repeated. "You’re making a scene."

Elara walked through the restaurant with her heels clicking against the marble floor. Heads turned as she made her way to Rebecca's table. Becky, her fiery red hair friend was practically glowing under the amber lights. She looked as stunning as ever—that "face card" was still the most reliable currency in the city. She leaned back, swirling a martini, looking completely bored while talking to a guy in a suit that cost more than a small car leaned. He seemed desperate for her attention.Elara knew the drill. Becky was a master of the "flirt and fly." She’d give a man just enough hope to buy her a drink, then disappear the moment he started talking about "future plans."Elara cleared her throat. A smile spread across her face as she reached the table.Becky’s eyes snapped up, ignored the man mid-sentence, and lit up like a firework. "Oh, thank God," she mouthed, before standing up to pull Elara into a suffocating hug."About time!" Becky cried, pulling back to look Elara up and dow

Vivienne put on her glasses and scarf. Her security team scooped her away because everything she was saying was unintelligible. She was a mess. Elara and Alistair took the kids and put them into the car. They drove away fast. Elara watched the ice cream shop disappear. She knew this was not over. Vivienne was not the kind of person that let anything go. She rushed the children inside the house."Go upstairs and wash up, babies," Elara said. She gave them each a quick kiss. "Uncle Alistair will be up in a minute to play."Once the kids were gone, the house felt too quiet. Alistair looked at her. "You okay? That was a big risk, Elara.""She talked about my children, Alistair. I won't apologize for that," Elara replied. Her hands were still shaking.Just then, her phone started to vibrate. She looked at the screen. It was an unknown number. She hesitated in answering. "Trouble?" Alistair asked, noticing her face."Probably," she whispered. She took a deep breath and answered waiting f

In the car, Leo broke the silence. "Mummy, that man is really handsome and nice. And he’s rich, too. I think he should be our daddy. He owns the company, right?"Elara choked on her own saliva. She coughed, her face turning red from shock."What man?" Lyra asked, looking curious."Mummy’s boss," Leo responded flatly.Lyra nodded seriously. "I trust your judgment, Leo." She then looked at her mother. "Mummy, what do you think?"Elara couldn't find the words. Her mind was still back in that hallway, reliving the fear of seeing Alex again. Now, her children were giving her a heart attack by suggesting he should be their father. They had no idea he actually was their father. She needed to change the subject fast. She frowned at Leo. "Why did you threaten your caregiver?" she asked sternly.Leo pouted. He turned his head and stared out the window, trying to avoid his mother’s gaze."Leo," she called again, her voice firmer this time."Mummy?" he answered quietly, still looking at the passi

Leo stayed quiet for a moment. He pouted, then finally spoke. "My name is Leo and my sister's name is Lyra. And my mummy..." He stopped for a second. "Can you help me find her? It is her first day at her new job. I want to wish her good luck."Alex felt his heart melt. What a sweet boy, he thought. He knelt down to be at Leo's height."Okay, Leo. Let’s go to the security room," Alex said. "My company has many cameras. We can find your mummy on one of the screens."Alex reached out his arms, and Leo climbed right in. As Alex held the boy, he felt a strange connection to him. He wondered if seeing Elara again was making him feel this way.The truth was, Alex had stayed single all these years. He always hoped he would find Elara again. Now he had found her, but she had run away before he could explain anything. The elevator doors opened, and Elara stepped out with Sashi. Her heart stopped when she saw the scene in front of her.Her son, Leo, was being held by the man who had broken her h

Elara looked at him with angry eyes. She did not back down."First of all, Mr. Sterling, my name is Mrs. Vance," she said. Her voice was like ice. "Do not call me by any other name."The other people in the room looked at each other. They were nervous. They started to pack their bags quickly. They did not want to be in the middle of this fight."Secondly," Elara continued. She crossed her arms over her chest. "If you have something to say, say it right now. I have many appointments today. I do not have time to waste."Alex felt a sting in his heart. He hoped she would be happy to see him, but she was only angry. She was not the same girl he used to know. This woman had no time for him at all."This is private," Alex said. He looked at the last few people in the room. "It is about the future of the company."He lied just so the others would leave. He watched the door close. Finally, they were all alone in the big room. The silence felt heavy."Now," Elara said. She did not sit down. "W

Alexander’s heart nearly jumped out of his chest. He felt like he was seeing a ghost. He stood frozen, staring at the woman he had spent six years dreaming about."Legal director?" he whispered, completely stunned. His mouth felt as dry as dust."You’re late," Elara said with a scowl on her face as she looked at her watch."Elara?" Alex called out, his voice shaking. He took a step toward her, but her cold gaze stopped him in his tracks."It’s Mrs. Vance," she corrected him firmly. She used the title "Mrs." on purpose. She had two children to protect, and she wouldn't let anyone in this city think she was anything less than a respectable, married woman. Having people believe she had a powerful husband gave her a level of respect and safety she never had before.Alex felt like he had been punched in the gut. 'Mrs. Vance?' She had moved on and started a whole life without him.The board members looked between them, confused by the tension. Elara didn't blink. She just opened her laptop
