Chapter 3

Autor: Ayim
Everyone panicked.

Jacob cried out, "What are you doing, Summer?!"

I smiled at him. "If I die again, will you finally believe that I want to leave?"

My mother clung to my legs and pleaded at me. "Summer, you're an adult. Stop making me worry, will you?"

Asking me not to make her worry was what my mother said most frequently to me.

When I set up shop for her during winter, she had said, "You worry me the most among the three of you."

But she would warm up my frozen hands bit by bit.

When the school semester started, she sent me to high school. "You don't have to worry about the school. Just make me worry less, and you'd be helping me."

But when I was in a coma, she said, "If you really want to die, die alone. Don't make me worry every day about you waking up to hurt Ella."

In the end, Jacob relented. He got a car for me.

But Ella stood in the way of the car and sounded really sad when she said, "Summer, once I give birth to the baby, you'll be an aunt. Don't go, please. I'll die after giving birth. Just wait a little longer. I'll give Jacob and the baby back to you."

"Move!" I pressed down on the horn.

Ella spread her arms and insisted that I get down.

In the past, I was the most loyal one out of us all. As long as they did not suffer, I would even risk my life.

The engine roared, and I floored the gas pedal.

Under the strong glare of the headlights, Ella's fair face overlapped with the timid expression she had when she first came to my house.

I turned the steering wheel, bypassed her, and tried to rush out.

Ella screeched, and Jacob held her tightly.

But the original wide-open gate suddenly closed, and the car crashed into the gate.

Jacob stormed over and dragged me out. "You're too unstable. If we let you leave, you'll be a ticking time bomb to Ella."

I was sent to a mental asylum, and the psychiatrist gave me pills for bipolar disorder.

Then, Jacob locked me in my room and had servants keep watch over me.

Whenever Ella was free, she would come in to talk to me. While she held a bowl of chicken soup, she would slurp at it while watching me.

"Summer, don't you think I've gained weight? The baby is getting older. Mom and Jacob are feeding me like they're fattening a pig. They even said that if I can't eat anymore, they'll force me to eat."

The pills made my thinking slow. I grabbed her ear lobe. "That's my earring."

Jacob and I had filled a bag of stones from the river. He had picked two of them to polish them. Then, he put silver rings into them as our ten-year anniversary gift.

Ella turned her face away and looked around. "Jacob said that I can take everything in this room."

Then, she took out a silver necklace and stuffed it into my hands. "By the way, I got your dog euthanized yesterday."

It took a long time before I registered what she said. I looked at her in confusion. "My dog is only ten. He was very healthy."

"But he doesn't like strangers. If he can't warm up to a new owner, there's no need for me to keep him around."

She smiled faintly, like she was throwing away a piece of furniture.

Jacob and Ethan came in to see me choking Ella.

Ethan kicked me in the chest, and my recently healed ribs were broken again.

Jacob then picked Ella up and said to Ethan, "Send Summer to the mental asylum again. Tell the psychiatrist to increase her dosage."

Right before he stepped out of the room, I laughed. "Jacob, I've been in a coma for three years, and my muscles have atrophied. If you increase the dosage any further, I'm going to end up paralyzed for the rest of my life.

"I'm sorry. I'll go now, okay?"

He stiffened up. But when he saw the bruises on Ella's neck, his voice turned cold. "If you're going to be paralyzed for life, I'll take care of you."

At that moment, my heart died.

When he saw Jacob leave, Ethan threw his motorbike's keys at me. "You want to leave, don't you? With you around, Ella would be wrought with paranoia every day."

I clambered off the bed and stared at him despite still bleeding from the head.

Feeling annoyed from the staring, he made it seem like he was going to kick me. "Get lost, you jinx. You always made Mom worry since you were young, and I suffered because of you too."

Three years ago, after I jumped off the building, wedding negotiations with Ethan's girlfriend fell through, and he had always blamed me for his breakup.

I rode on the motorbike. When I reached the highway, I turned around. The entire city was gray, as if trapped in a nightmare.

I sent a message to Jacob. [I don't love you anymore. Trust me.]

Jacob took the baby and handed it to the police officers who appeared behind him. "Please complete the paternity test and return the baby to his parents."When Ella saw the police, her legs gave out, and she collapsed on the floor. "Jacob, I just wanted you to stay with me and marry me as soon as possible. All I wanted was to drag you out of Summer's room. "I didn't want to stay there anymore. If you want to have your meltdowns, why drag me along? We could have just ignored her and lived a good life. "Why do we have to live in a hell with her around?" As she ranted, the police officers handcuffed her. "No! I don't want to go to jail! Mom, Ethan, I don't want to go to jail! I just love you too much!"My mother turned away. Her hollow eyes were filled with endless exhaustion. Ethan stepped forward to pull Ella back, but the officers kept him away from her. Jacob then pulled out the sleeve that she was holding onto. "Don't worry. Go to jail, and you can make it to Summer. I ha

After going home, my mother's mental state fluctuated. Gradually, Ella got annoyed with her and started yelling at her. "Mom, can't you see that the baby's diaper is soiled?"My mother snapped out of her daze and suddenly started rummaging around the closet. "The temperature has dropped today. Summer doesn't have enough blankets. I'll get new ones for her.""Mom, Summer is dead!" Ella's eyes turned bloodshot. She started pushing my mother out of the bedroom. "Forget it. She's still your real daughter, and I'm only adopted. No matter how hard I try, I can't win your heart."Ethan heard it and tugged at my mother, yelling at her. "Have you gone senile? Summer is dead. Ella is still recovering from her pregnancy. Could you snap out of it?"My mother stared at him as he took delight in my death, and she slapped him in the face. Once she did, her eyes sparkled with tears. "Summer is your sister, and you want her dead so much?"Ella pulled a long face. "Stop making it sound like you'r

I stayed for only eight hours on the forensic autopsy table. Eight hours later, they became sure that it was not a murder, so the forensic center called my family to claim my body. Jacob did not sleep. After he got out of bed early in the morning, he had breakfast and put on a black suit. My mother put on a white dress and even put on pearl earrings. They stood in front of the door and told Ella to stay when she wanted to follow along. Worry flashed in Ella's eyes, but she still shed some crocodile tears while holding her son. At the forensic center, Jacob lifted the white sheet, and my ugly, twisted face was revealed. I stood by the side and did not miss a single one of his expressions. He froze, as if he had turned into ice. Then, his eyes turned bloodshot as he gulped, as if swallowing became hard. After that, he shut his eyes, and the veins on his temples appeared. Pain was rampaging in him, but he stamped it down. I laughed soundlessly. His love came far too la

When the door fell silent, Jacob took out a recorder from the bedside table. He played the very first recording. The voice that came through was hoarse and accompanied by pained grunts. When Jacob fell from the fifth floor, his organs had ruptured, and he stayed for three months in the ICU. After he woke up, he learned that I was in a coma. Then, he had recorded his very first words. "Summer, if you had hesitated for even a second before jumping, I would have believed that you loved me. I only registered for marriage with Ella. "I felt guilty toward you, so I never went all the way with her. Since you won't believe me, we don't have to care about your feelings anymore."As I looked down at him, I recalled how we had fought three years back. I had discovered a photo of a bathroom in Jacob's phone. Behind the frosted glass was the silhouette of a woman. I thrashed everything in the manor and demanded he hand over the woman, but he had only said that it was just a photo, an

Jacob was stunned. His face slowly drained of color. "Are you sure that Summer died?"The servant hesitated for a bit before mumbling, "I heard from the others. I didn't see with my own eyes."Ethan was the first to laugh. "Summer has always said that she wants to die, but she never did."Those words shattered the silent and tense atmosphere. Ella smiled and spoke as if she was being thoughtful about me. "Summer is competitive. She'd rather fake her death than apologize to us in court. "Why don't we fulfill her wish and let her disappear from our world?"Then, she tucked her hair behind her ear and sounded as if she was cooing at the baby as she said, "But she's going to be hiding in the shadows. If she wants to take revenge against us in the future, it'll be difficult for us to fend against her. "I'll always be worried. We really need to send her into either prison or the mental asylum for one to two years so that she can calm down. That way, I'll feel more at ease."I applau

But soon after I left and was at a gas station at an R&R, Jacob found me. When I saw the GPS tracker on his phone, I understood what had happened. "You put a tracker on me?"Jacob's eyes were bloodshot. "I know you too well, Summer. You'd rather drag everyone down to hell with you than let go."I sighed. "If you don't believe me, you can send me to another country where you can't see me anymore.""Never!" He stared at me. "I won't risk Ella and the baby's safety and gamble on the possibility of you letting me go."He took me back to the city. "You're going to stay here for the time being."I looked around. The windows had been sealed shut. There was only a small window available that let me see the York family's manor. "You know that I hate being trapped. Isn't it enough that you've trapped me for three years?""Take it as recuperating here. Once Ella gives birth, I'll let you leave."He left, and I was trapped in that room day and night. Ella sat in the courtyard right in f
