Chapter 2

Autor: Ayim
"Stop staring. Jacob is now Ella's husband. He has nothing to do with you anymore." I was an eyesore to my mother in every aspect. "Summer, Jacob's heart doesn't belong to you. Even if you tried to kill yourself, he wouldn't stay with you."

Then, she changed the topic, and the dark circles under her eyes made her look feeble. "Ella has a tumor in her brain. She might die at any moment. Let her live her life."

I stared at her. "When did they get together?"

"Halloween, four years ago. They registered for marriage but were worried that you'd notice. So, Ella couldn't have her wedding reception." She then looked away.

"Honestly, you brought this on yourself. If you hadn't poked your nose into our business and remained clueless, you could've gone on living your life with Jacob."

My memories slowly came back to me.

During Halloween four years prior, my mother had been detained at a casino because she was accused of cheating.

I drove to the casino on my motorbike and crashed into the door. Then, I paid fifty thousand dollars to bring her back.

At that moment, Jacob had called me to tell me to wait for him while he brought Ella to the city hall.

Mother knew that I was dating Jacob, yet because she hated me, she helped them lie to me.

The interrupted music of the wedding started playing again outside.

The guests started cheering. "Kiss the bride!"

I covered my face with the blanket. Suddenly, I felt tired. I could no longer fight for Jacob, and I did not want to do it anymore.

As my thoughts drifted away, I suddenly remembered a time when I was hospitalized.

That was the second year we were together.

I'd just undergone surgery for appendicitis and woke up once the anesthetics wore off. Then, I noticed Jacob lying in the bed next to mine.

The doctor came in to yell at him for being crazy. Apparently, he had lied about his own stomach pain and got his appendix removed as well.

Jacob winced as he smiled. "My girlfriend doesn't like pain. I'd need to know how much it hurts to know how to comfort her."

In everyone's eyes, Jacob was a crazy person who loved me to bits.

Yet that same crazy person held Ella in his arms as he said hoarsely that the three of us had to bear our sins together.

I got out of bed quietly to grab a box from my drawer.

When Ella found me, I was on the rooftop and throwing our photos into a pan of burning coals.

The fire ate away at our held hands, Jacob kissing my cheek, and the three of us tossing our graduation caps into the air.

Ella said, "Summer, stay away from the fire."

I propped my cheek on my hand. I was missing a molar.

While Ella was working, her boss harassed her, so I went to confront him. I ended up losing two of my teeth when he slapped me. I asked her, "Ella, three years ago, I noticed Jacob going to the hospital for a fertility test.

"I went to the hospital to catch him cheating on me, but you suddenly told me that you got into an accident. Back then, you already finished marrying Jacob and wanted to get a test-tube baby, right?"

She choked up. "Jacob knows that I like children and was worried that I couldn't afford to wait any longer. I just wasn't expecting you to be crazy enough to retrieve the security footage from all the convenience stores.

"I was forced to run back from the hospital."

I laughed. "I always acted crazy because I treated you as the best sister ever."

Then, I shrugged. "Not anymore."

The wind suddenly blew stronger. Ella drew closer, and the fire went toward her.

Jacob dragged her back and examined her, only to find that some of the threads on her sweater had been burned. "I told you to stay away from Summer and not to trigger her. Why didn't you listen?"

He sent Ella to my mother and glared at me in frustration. "Summer, if you want to set things on fire or jump off a building, just target me alone. Don't hurt Ella, I'm begging you."

I laughed. "I don't want to die with you anymore. I'm giving you my blessings. Why won't you believe me?"

I spread my hands open. Just now, I had also shielded Ella from the fire, and the blisters that had formed due to the heat popped.

He saw it but did not come forward.

Ethan ran over and mocked me. "Summer, you're stubborn. You just won't go to the grave alone without Jacob."

Suddenly, I turned around and climbed on the balcony railing.

Jacob took the baby and handed it to the police officers who appeared behind him. "Please complete the paternity test and return the baby to his parents."When Ella saw the police, her legs gave out, and she collapsed on the floor. "Jacob, I just wanted you to stay with me and marry me as soon as possible. All I wanted was to drag you out of Summer's room. "I didn't want to stay there anymore. If you want to have your meltdowns, why drag me along? We could have just ignored her and lived a good life. "Why do we have to live in a hell with her around?" As she ranted, the police officers handcuffed her. "No! I don't want to go to jail! Mom, Ethan, I don't want to go to jail! I just love you too much!"My mother turned away. Her hollow eyes were filled with endless exhaustion. Ethan stepped forward to pull Ella back, but the officers kept him away from her. Jacob then pulled out the sleeve that she was holding onto. "Don't worry. Go to jail, and you can make it to Summer. I ha

After going home, my mother's mental state fluctuated. Gradually, Ella got annoyed with her and started yelling at her. "Mom, can't you see that the baby's diaper is soiled?"My mother snapped out of her daze and suddenly started rummaging around the closet. "The temperature has dropped today. Summer doesn't have enough blankets. I'll get new ones for her.""Mom, Summer is dead!" Ella's eyes turned bloodshot. She started pushing my mother out of the bedroom. "Forget it. She's still your real daughter, and I'm only adopted. No matter how hard I try, I can't win your heart."Ethan heard it and tugged at my mother, yelling at her. "Have you gone senile? Summer is dead. Ella is still recovering from her pregnancy. Could you snap out of it?"My mother stared at him as he took delight in my death, and she slapped him in the face. Once she did, her eyes sparkled with tears. "Summer is your sister, and you want her dead so much?"Ella pulled a long face. "Stop making it sound like you'r

I stayed for only eight hours on the forensic autopsy table. Eight hours later, they became sure that it was not a murder, so the forensic center called my family to claim my body. Jacob did not sleep. After he got out of bed early in the morning, he had breakfast and put on a black suit. My mother put on a white dress and even put on pearl earrings. They stood in front of the door and told Ella to stay when she wanted to follow along. Worry flashed in Ella's eyes, but she still shed some crocodile tears while holding her son. At the forensic center, Jacob lifted the white sheet, and my ugly, twisted face was revealed. I stood by the side and did not miss a single one of his expressions. He froze, as if he had turned into ice. Then, his eyes turned bloodshot as he gulped, as if swallowing became hard. After that, he shut his eyes, and the veins on his temples appeared. Pain was rampaging in him, but he stamped it down. I laughed soundlessly. His love came far too la

When the door fell silent, Jacob took out a recorder from the bedside table. He played the very first recording. The voice that came through was hoarse and accompanied by pained grunts. When Jacob fell from the fifth floor, his organs had ruptured, and he stayed for three months in the ICU. After he woke up, he learned that I was in a coma. Then, he had recorded his very first words. "Summer, if you had hesitated for even a second before jumping, I would have believed that you loved me. I only registered for marriage with Ella. "I felt guilty toward you, so I never went all the way with her. Since you won't believe me, we don't have to care about your feelings anymore."As I looked down at him, I recalled how we had fought three years back. I had discovered a photo of a bathroom in Jacob's phone. Behind the frosted glass was the silhouette of a woman. I thrashed everything in the manor and demanded he hand over the woman, but he had only said that it was just a photo, an

Jacob was stunned. His face slowly drained of color. "Are you sure that Summer died?"The servant hesitated for a bit before mumbling, "I heard from the others. I didn't see with my own eyes."Ethan was the first to laugh. "Summer has always said that she wants to die, but she never did."Those words shattered the silent and tense atmosphere. Ella smiled and spoke as if she was being thoughtful about me. "Summer is competitive. She'd rather fake her death than apologize to us in court. "Why don't we fulfill her wish and let her disappear from our world?"Then, she tucked her hair behind her ear and sounded as if she was cooing at the baby as she said, "But she's going to be hiding in the shadows. If she wants to take revenge against us in the future, it'll be difficult for us to fend against her. "I'll always be worried. We really need to send her into either prison or the mental asylum for one to two years so that she can calm down. That way, I'll feel more at ease."I applau

But soon after I left and was at a gas station at an R&R, Jacob found me. When I saw the GPS tracker on his phone, I understood what had happened. "You put a tracker on me?"Jacob's eyes were bloodshot. "I know you too well, Summer. You'd rather drag everyone down to hell with you than let go."I sighed. "If you don't believe me, you can send me to another country where you can't see me anymore.""Never!" He stared at me. "I won't risk Ella and the baby's safety and gamble on the possibility of you letting me go."He took me back to the city. "You're going to stay here for the time being."I looked around. The windows had been sealed shut. There was only a small window available that let me see the York family's manor. "You know that I hate being trapped. Isn't it enough that you've trapped me for three years?""Take it as recuperating here. Once Ella gives birth, I'll let you leave."He left, and I was trapped in that room day and night. Ella sat in the courtyard right in f
