Mag-log inI walked away from the balcony and back into the hall.
The music was gentle and soft, couples were pairing up to dance. It was now or never.
It was true that I’d had an unhealthy crush on Asher for years, it was also true that I’d imagined many times what it’ll be like to finally admit it to him, and I’d be a liar if I claimed the curiosity I’d once felt was completely dead.
More than ever, I wished for a glass of something strong—anything to dull my mind to what I was about to do.
I made my way to Asher with my heart somewhere in my throat. I felt light-headed from all the nerves, and my mouth seemed to have lost all its moisture. As I got closer, I felt the sudden urge to bolt for the door, but Rosalia’s threat hung heavily over my neck, leaving me with no other choice but to keep walking.
Asher was surrounded by a few of his friends, and as much as I wanted this to be a private moment, I knew I couldn’t get him alone on a day like this.
This could go really, really bad, I thought to myself, as I took the last few steps that brought me right before him.
He’d been laughing at something Jacob—the gamma’s son and his closest friend, had said, when he noticed me.
“Hey,” I wanted to say, but the words stuck in my throat, never left my lips
“Can I help you?” he asked, brow cocked.
“I—yes, Actually, I wanted to congratulate you on your… big day!”
“Thank you, Beatrix.”
A chill ran through me, I couldn’t deny I liked the way my name sounded against his lips.
I turned, and was instantly met with Rosalia’s stare, urging me on.“I also wanted to talk to you,” I started again.
The soft nod he gave was the approval I needed.I rambled on unintelligibly, “I know this is weirdtosay—but, I’ve heard a crushonyou since…forever, and I know you’regettingmarried to my sister, but, I just thoughtyoushould know that—"“Hey, calm down,” Asher cut me off to say, “Now repeat that, but much slower,”
“I love you!”
The words had escaped my mouth before I could think it through.
Suddenly, there was silence. Not just amongst the men standing before me, but from every single member present in the ball. The music had gone off too.
They’d heard me. Every single person in the ball had heard me.
My gaze found Rosalia’s, and I realized a moment too late that this was a setup.
Then, laughter burst out from every corner. I turned red, as tears of shame filled my eyes.
Rosalia walked up to me. “Pathetic,” she hissed at me, before linking her arms in Asher’s.Her actions shouldn’t have surprised me, yet, it did.
Once again, I was left wondering what I’d done to have her hate me this much.Without another word, I turned around and fled from the party.

The ball was over, but my humiliation wasn’t.
The video of my ‘love confession’ was all over social media now.
“You should steer clear of me for the next few weeks—or months,” I said to Audrey. It was going to be bad on her reputation if she was seen around me after what happened.
“I can’t believe Rosalia could be that cruel,” she said silently to herself.
“Has Asher spoken about it?” I asked offhandedly, to hide my curiosity.
“Actually, no.” she answered, thoughtfully.
“He must think me a fool, and a selfish one at that,” I complained, hating the fact that I still cared about what he thought of me.
“You don’t know that,” she said, discouraging my assumption.
“It doesn’t matter anyway. As embarrassing as that was, it’s not exactly my biggest worry right now—” a knock interrupted me.
“No doubt a summon from my father,” I muttered with a tight smile, as I made my way to the door.Just as I’d predicted, it was a maid here to inform me that my presence was requested at my father’s office immediately.
“I could come with you, you know—for moral support,” Audrey offered.
“I assure you, you don’t want to be there when my father rains hell and brimstone on me for embarrassing our family. Again.”
.
Wasting no time, I headed for my father’s office. The last time I’d arrived a few minutes later than he’d requested, I’d ended up with a bruised eye.
Father’s summon was never good news, never. It was always about something I did wrong—and there was always something.
I stepped into his office and was immediately met with his fuming gaze. He wasn’t alone.
Rosalia and my mother, Grace, were with him. Mom looked twice as pissed as he was.
I should know better than to speak, but clearly, I didn’t.
“I’m sorry about the ball—I didn’t mean anything I said to the Alpha,” I defended. The fact that my parents had witnessed the whole thing filled me with a fresh wave of embarrassment.
Mother walked past me to shut the door, and for some reasons, that left me feeling uneasy.
“How could you do this, Bellatrix?” my father thundered. There wasn’t just anger in his eyes, but pain too.
“I—”
“Shut up!” he roared, “Don’t you dare open that filthy, lying mouth of yours.” He warned.
Of course, no one ever cared to hear my part of the story.“Who is he?” my mother asked, and I blinked, confused. “Who is the bastard that got you pregnant?”
I woke up with a start. My breaths were ragged.I remembered now. The stranger I’d met at the club, the same one who’d abandoned me in a hotel room, was the same man I’d just met.Clinton.My shaky hands reached for my neck, and I flinched. The bruise hadn’t yet healed.I realized that I was still in the same black dress I’d worn to dinner earlier.I sat up from the bed.It all made sense now. It made sense why I thought he looked familiar; I could have sworn I’d seen those eyes before—and I had.Bare-footed, I matched out of my room, and straight into his own room. It was the last place I ever thought I’d go; and yet I needed answers, and I was going to get them.He wasn’t here. I walked deeper into his room, coming to a pause before the picture on the wall. It was a picture of Clinton, only he looked different. His eyes seemed more alive, filled with emotions, and perhaps it had something to do with the stunningly beautiful brunette woman by his side. Her smile was soft and inno
ALPHA CLINTONKonrad hadn’t lied. Bellatrix was indeed beautiful, but I’d imagine she’d be even more beautiful if her sunken cheeks were filled out, if her pale skin had some color to it, and her dull chestnut hair was given better care. Her appearance left me wondering what exactly was the living conditions she was forced to endure at Ironclan Pack?“Should I send for the healers?” Konrad questioned,“She’ll be fine, she just needs some rest.”I wiped her blood off my lips.Okay, maybe I’d gone a bit over with the marking—a little scare was all I’d intended and I’d assumed her wolf would be able to handle it, but it seemed I’d overestimated her wolf’s strength.I’ll have to be more careful. There were already enough rumours going around about me, I didn’t exactly want to have my second wife's death in the list of my ‘evil deeds’. “Agatha’s been wanting to speak with you,” my beta informed. I let out an exasperated breath.“I’ll meet up with her later.” Or never.“So, what do you thi
He had dark brown eyes, flecked with gold, charcoal-brown hair and a face that seemed to have been carved to perfection. He was tall, the type that drew gazes—as if his aura alone wasn’t enough to do that.He strode into the room with the air of a man used to owning spaces.Rosalia pulled me to my feet, making it seem like she’d only been trying to help me up.I shoved away from her.“A–alpha Clinton,” My mother stammered, and for the first time in my life, I saw something in her eyes I never thought I’d ever see. Fear.“I meant no disrespect—”“And yet you threaten my wife, in my pack,” he stated,“I–I apologise," she breathed. If I wasn’t filled with so much rage, I’d have burst into laughter at the scene. “She might have been under your care her whole life,” he said, closing in, “But she’s married to me now.”“I understand, this will not repeat itself—”“For your sake, I hope not.”All along, Rosalia had been strangely quiet. The look on her face was one I recognized; she was chec
BELLATRIX.I’d believed I could do it, I’d believed I could go through the days without thinking about Audrey, but I couldn’t.More times than I could count, I’d absentmindedly reached for my phone to share updates with her, only to be reminded we weren’t exactly on talking termsAudrey and I had always been inseparable ever since we were kids. I told her everything and she never kept anything from me. She was the sister I never had and without her, I felt more alone than I’d ever been.I read through our past chats with a sad smile on my face.I missed her so much.Calling her would only make things worse, but I couldn’t help it when my hands reached for the dial button.Audrey was the one person I always felt safe around, and yet, I couldn’t help but feel nervous as the phone rang.‘You’ve reached Audrey’s voice mail, please drop a message or try again later.’ My heart slumped in my chest. I called again, and again, but they all went straight to voicemails.I returned to our chat.
ALPHA CLINTON’S POVI sat on the bar stool, twirling the glass of genever in my grip. It was a distasteful drink, yet it was the only thing I took whenever I came here.My beta’s scent hit me even before I spotted him.It always bothered me how he managed to keep his hair so immaculately in place at all times—even during fights. It was unnerving.“Alpha,” Konrad addressed with a swift bow, before taking the stool beside me.He doesn’t bother asking why I’d chosen one of the scrappiest pubs in the pack to have a drink in. By now, he’d understood I was weird like that.“You’re late,” I noted.“It’s a thirty minutes’ drive from the jewellery shop to here.”“Fifteen minutes if you ran instead,” I noted. “Where is it?”He took out the small crimson, jewel box and handed it to me. “I think she’ll like it.” I stuck the box in my pocket, only to be met with his cocked brow.“What?” “Aren’t you going to have a look at it?”“I trust you,” I said, then called the waiter over. “A glass of whis
“Why are you crying?” Esmee asked. I hadn’t even realized I was. “Did I make you sad?” I quickly wiped my tears, then walked to her.“No, of course not. It’s just…you remind me of someone.” I said, before swiftly changing the topic. “So, why were you spying on me earlier?”. “Will I get in trouble?” she questioned softly.“Not at all,” I said, with a soft smile.“Are you going to stay here forever?” she asked, her eyes wide with curiosity.“Depends, would you like me to?”“Yes! Yes! Yesss!” she sang, and I couldn’t help the emotion blooming in my chest. It was my dream to be a mother—that dream had been so abruptly stolen from me three years ago, yet now, it felt like fate was giving me another chance.“Then I’ll stay.”“Yay!!!” she rejoiced. Then skipped off the bed. “Come, I’ll show all my toys,” she said, excitedly pulling me after her.***It’s been three days.Three days since I’d gotten ‘married,’ and yet, I had not a faintest idea of who my husband was.Konrad's response was
