<<Mora>>

“So what am I looking at here?” I growl from between clenched teeth; I can’t open my mouth fully thanks to the grip Alpha James has on my chin. No one has said anything for a long time; we’re just storming past massive paintings of people long since dead and windows high enough for me to see the barbed wire fences and the ropes hanging from the tall trees. I don’t need to smell them to know the ropes are soaked in wolfsbane; the grass is dry but the rope is dripping steadily.

‘Fight them; you're stronger than them.’ My wolf hisses as Alpha James lets out a heavy sigh and takes a left at the end of a wide corridor. I shove her back because now is not the time to fight; I have no idea how to put down an Alpha, let alone take on several enforcers at the same time. I need to wait until the time is right and I’ve learned just enough to actually survive.

“I mean, a whipping, starvation or just the classic isolation until I’m on the edge of losing my mind?” I try to sound unbothered by what's coming for me but inside I can feel my stomach hardening with anxiety and my spine is sweaty so badly I’m surprised the enforcers at my back can’t see it dripping off me. Alpha James remains silent but the grip on my chin tightens to the point that I feel my jawbone tense under the pressure; if he keeps going, my jaw will snap and even shifting will be nearly impossible.

“You can’t do this, Alpha James; she did nothing wrong, the basement is a punishment intended for serious crimes done to another student.” Hyde growls from behind me. I can’t turn back to look at him but I do silently wonder why the enforcer who drugged me to get me out of my father's Pack is now defending me. He sounds almost worried and something about the cold tattooed enforcer makes me think worry is not an emotion he’s accustomed to.

“Do you wish to join her, Hyde?” Alpha James hisses his name like an insult; my teeth almost snap from how hard I’m grinding them. I don’t get a chance to say anything in the enforcer's defence, though, because a tiny door is opened and I’m suddenly faced with my worst nightmare.

The basement. I would know that rotting smell of damp anywhere. It doesn’t matter how fancy a house is or how well maintained; every basement has a strange, skin-clinging scent of rot that seems to be soaked into the foundation. The stairs themselves are made out of stone instead of wood but the small space is dark so I can’t see the bottom. I don’t need to see the ground to know there is no way in hell I want to go down there. My father used the basement as a form of punishment so I tried to pretend I wasn’t scared but I always failed, the second he realised how terrified I was, he started making me go down there for longer periods of time. I’ve been beaten, starved, sliced open and left to bleed out but it was always the space that terrified me, not the damage done to my body and mind.

"This is the best you've got?” I try to sound bored when inside; I’m screaming with the desire to run as far and fast as I can from the damp, dark space. “Is this where my knees buckle and I beg the big Alpha male not to throw me into the darkness?” I know my taunts are doing nothing but piss off Alpha James but I refuse to show him the same fear I showed my father. I’ve spent my whole life bending to an Alpha that did nothing but hurt me. I refuse to spend my time at the War Academy in pain and pretending I’m some weak Omega.

"Let's see how smart you think you are in a week.” Alpha James hisses as he pushes his face against mine; he sniffs up the side of my face while I do my best not to cringe back from his touch. The idea of being left in the dark for a solid week fills me with a terror I never knew I could feel but I force my heart rate to slow and my eyes to stay blank.

“Easy.” I smirk at Alpha James; his eyes flash a bright yellow a split second before he jerks his hand and lets go just as I stumble over the first step. I’m falling with my arms out wide in an attempt to slow my movements but there are stone walls that offer nothing for me to grab onto. No holes, no handrails, not even a loose stone for me to grab onto for a weapon.

“Welcome to Irkwood War Academy, Morana. I have a feeling we’re going to break you before the week is out.” Alpha James calls down at me; the door closes with a sharp snap before I hit the bottom of the stairs. I don’t open my eyes or let a single sound leave my lips; I just lie there on the cold, hard ground with my hands clenched by my sides as I finally let the fear consume me. Alpha James wants to break me but I’ve lived my life broken in a backwards Pack and a deranged Alpha. Now I’m going to rebuild myself and escape before anyone can force me to do anything else.

  • His Mate. His Brat.   Chapter 32

    >I’m not sure where I’m running to; it's lunchtime, so the corridors are empty but even if they were full, I would still be running with this strange haze of red clouding my vision. I’m not angry at Lucian; he was just a convenient person for me to yell at after realising just how far my father has taken his control over me. I’ve been living in a fantasy world, thinking the world spins one way when it actually turns the other, no matter how hard I try to rationalise it, the only reason I can think of why my father did this was because he wanted power over me. That's all every male wants. They use their strength and pheromones to control females and think we should just kneel beside them and say, ‘thank you.' I might be untrained but I refuse to be weak. I’ll train until I’m stronger and then I’ll show every male exactly how weak females can be. “Morana!” Ethan’s yell breaks through the cloud of anger rolling over me. I stumble as I place my hand on a rough stone wall and pull

  • His Mate. His Brat.   Chapter 31

    >“So he lied to me.” Mora looks down at the book but not before I see the tears welling in her eyes and the way her small button nose has turned red, something about my mate tells me she isn’t used to crying in front of others, if she cries at all. My throat goes tight as I clench my hands into fists at my side; every dominant part of me is screaming at me to comfort my mate but I doubt Mora will welcome my touch right now. She knows she’s my mate but for some reason she’s fighting the connection and keeping me at arm's length. I badly want to shake her and demand she accepts my mark but the Alpha side of her will just shut down the second I make that kind of demand. My best way in is being available for her to confide in and giving her the one thing no one else ever has. A safe place to be vulnerable. “Look at me, Mora.” I growl as I continue to clench my hands into fists; my dull fingernails dig into my calloused palms so hard I’m worried I’m going to draw blood. “Just l

    >“Alright, piss off to lunch and meet me in the garden after; be ready for sparring.” I barely even hear Lucian bark the order to the class or the sounds of chairs scraping against the floor. I’m engrossed in the book he handed us all; none of it makes any sense to me, it's almost like I’ve been living in a bubble lost in time. The book clearly outlines all of the laws; some of them I know and some of them are completely new to me but apparently all of them were dictated by the Alpha King and are enforced by the Royal enforcers. It says each Pack should follow the laws and it even says when the Alpha King should be called in and when the Alpha can handle things on his own. “This makes no sense.” I whisper to myself as I read the part about Omegas being protected under something called the Morgan Law. I have no idea who or what Morgan is but apparently whatever happened has caused several laws to be issued to protect Omegas from cruel and unusual punishment; it's even a crime

  • His Mate. His Brat.   Chapter 29

    >"Sorry, Beta," Jack mutters under his breath before grabbing my hand and dragging me past Lucian into the classroom. For just a second my breasts rub against Lucian’s chest and I swear he pulls in a deep breath and tightens his hands into fists but I’m in the classroom before I can fully take in the moment. ‘Godess, he smells so good.’ My wolf whispers as Jack pulls me past several enforcers already sitting at the tables; each head turns to look at me but I keep my eyes forward until Jack stops at a table with two seats and practically pushes me into one of them. “Welcome to Pack History.” Lucian isn’t shouting but his voice carries across the classroom and wraps around me anyway. I try to look away but I can't; it's like he’s holding me captive with those chocolate brown eyes, each time I try to look away it's like there’s a force connecting us together and forcing my eyes back to him. “Why aren’t we training?” One enforcer barks out; he’s already muscle-stacked, and I be

  • His Mate. His Brat.   Chapter 28

    >By the time Alpha James calls for us to stop running, I feel like my lungs are in my stomach and my knees are made of sandpaper; every muscle in my body aches. Even when I stop, I still feel like I’m going to fall flat on my ass. I have no idea how long I’ve been running; I just know it's more than I’ve ever run before. “Go to the classroom, keep your trap shut and try to learn something.” Alpha James growls down at me while the rest of the class spars with the enforcers. “You too." He growls at Jack; we both just stare at him with slightly open mouths while our breath pants in and out. “Classroom? Don’t we get to spar?” Each word hurts but I manage to push them out before bending low and bracing myself on my knees. I’m covered in so much sweat that I look like I’ve just showered in my clothes and stepped out into the world without drying off. “Spar.” Alpha James snorts before making himself bend down so he can look me dead in the eye. “You are no Alpha. You never will be

  • His Mate. His Brat.   Chapter 27

    >“Who is he and why is he talking to my mate?” I hiss at Hyde as I watch the training session from the sidelines. Alpha James is making them run for much longer than necessary, but it's not lawbreaking, so I force myself to stay on the sidelines and watch as my mate gasps and pants while talking to a very attractive blonde male. "That's the one that was sent for correction, you because he's, erm, well, you know.” Hyde’s ears turn red as he grips the back of his neck and looks down at the ground. “Gay.” I say firmly. “It's not a dirty word, Hyde; it's who he is and people need to accept that.” I don’t think Hyde is homophobic; I think he’s just not used to people like this male around him; he probably makes the big enforcer a little uncomfortable. Hyde doesn’t do well with the unknown.“Whatever.” Hyde grunts as his nose scrunches up and he forces himself to look up at Mora and her new companion with narrowed eyes. “He’s called Jackson but goes by Jack; he’s from a Pack in
