FAZER LOGINMIA
Practice ran late. Coach had us drilling defensive plays until my legs were jelly and sweat glued my hair to my neck. By the time I stumbled out of the locker room, night had taken over the campus, the parking lot lights casting everything in a washed-out orange glow.
Exhaustion weighed on me, making every muscle ache so much that it forced me to forget my problems for a while. Silas’s escalating texts, my father’s warnings and the weird pull of Xavier’s eyes during drills.
I hitched my gym bag higher and headed across the quad.
The hairs on the back of my neck stood, a cold shiver skated down my spine. Instinctively, I looked up and my breath got hooked in my throat when I saw two men in dark suits standing in the shadows near the science building.
It was the one place that faced the quad and they had a good view of everyone coming out of the court.
My hands trembled at my sides as I debated the best way to get out of this. I couldn’t see their faces but from the dressing, I knew they were David’s men.
“Mia! Wait up!”
I jumped, nearly screaming at the loud voice. Madison jogged toward me, cluelessly bright with her ponytail bouncing. Relief and annoyance crashed into each other in my chest as I pulled away my gaze from the men watching me.
“You scared me.”
“Sorry!” She fell into step beside me, launching into a rant about practice drills. I barely heard her. My eyes kept darting over my shoulder to check if the men were still there.
“Madison, can you walk with me to my car?”
She blinked then shrugged like it was normal. “Yeah. Of course.”
We crossed the quad. Madison filled the silence with rambling commentary, something about upcoming games, annoying classmates, one guy she thought had a crush on her. I made appropriate noises at intervals but my full attention was on the other side of us so I knew the exact moment when they started moving.
If I had any doubt they were watching me. That just confirmed it.
We stepped into the parking lot. My old Honda waited in the back row.
Madison was still talking, but her hand was wrapped around my wrist now.
A sleek black SUV rolled up beside us and I froze.
The window lowered and another suited man with an earpiece in his ear was in the driver’s seat.
“Miss Winston,” he said smoothly.“We’re here to escort you home. Your father sent us.”
Ice slid down my spine and I shot a look toward Madison, who looked confused and a little scared.
“I’m fine,” I forced a smile, trying to sound casual. “I have my own car.”
“Your father insists.”
Before I could speak, the back door cracked open and someone stepped out. My feet moved on their own, inching backward. I could see the man reaching for me and for some reason, my legs refused to move.
Run! I screamed mentally but it was for nothing.
His hand had closed on my arm when something rough jerked me away from them. I blinked, staring at the back of the person standing between me and the SUV.
“The lady said no.” Xavier growled.
His stance was rigid, shoulders coiled and radiating a volatile energy that sped up the beat of my heart.
I’d forgotten Madison was beside me until I felt her hand squeeze my arm tighter.
The driver’s face hardened. “This doesn’t concern you.”
“She said no.” Xavier didn’t raise his voice but whatever the man saw in his eyes made him hesitate. “Leave.”
A flicker of something passed over the driver’s face. He looked at Xavier with fear marring his features. After a tense second, he gave a single nod to the other man and the car’s back door slammed in succession.
Tires screeched loudly as the SUV sped away.
Xavier stood there a moment longer, breathing heavily. His shoulders moved up and down for a moment before he exhaled loudly and then he turned to me.
“You okay?” His voice was rougher than I’d ever heard it.
“I—yeah.” My heartbeat was loud in my ears, I barely heard the words. “How did you…?”
“I recognized the vehicle.” He was too close now. The heat of his body wrapped around me. “You shouldn’t walk alone at night.”
“I wasn’t alone. Madison was with—”
“Madison,” he echoed sharply, as if her name irritated him. He shot her a look. “You should go.”
Madison hesitated, then squeezed my arm. “Text me when you get home.”
When she left, the air around us thickened.
“You can’t let them catch you off guard,” Xavier said, voice low. “You need to be alert. Always.”
My own frustration flared. “I can’t live in fear every second. I had practice. I have a life.”
“You need to be careful,” he insisted, the edge in his voice razor sharp.
“And you need to stop acting like you know everything about my life.” I snapped without thinking.
I should thank him for saving me from my father’s men. I don’t know what I would have done if he hadn’t showed up. But the thought of coming off as some type of damsel in distress, him saving me once again, rubbed me off the wrong way.
“You don’t understand what you’re dealing with,” he said quietly. Something unsettled flickered in his eyes. That made my brows raise, trying to decipher what it meant.
“What does that mean? What’s going on with you?” I stepped closer without intending to. “And why do you keep—”
“Mia, go home.” His voice was strangely soft all of a sudden. “Please.”
He backed away quickly, like distancing himself was the only thing keeping him steady.
When he reached his car, he paused, looked back, and said, “You have no idea how close you just came to…”
“Close to what?” I asked.
He didn’t bother answering my question. He got in his car and slammed the door, a second later, the engine roared to life and he sped off.
I stood there trembling. My entire body was buzzing with a mix of fear and adrenaline. But I was mostly confused, wondering what his deal was.
I drove home in paranoid bursts, checking my mirrors constantly. When I reached my dorm, I locked the door behind me and sank onto the bed.
I got a text from Madison during the drive but I only checked it then.
Maddie: You okay?? Xavier looked like he was about to rip that guy apart omg.
Another buzz. I glanced at the message from an unknown number.
I already knew who it was and it made my stomach drop.
‘Did you really think you could run from me? We’ll be seeing each other soon. And next time, your basketball captain won’t be there to save you. — S’
My hand went cold. The knot that formed in my stomach twisting even more.
I curled up on the bed with my mother’s necklace burning hot against my skin and a new, terrifying realization settling in my bones that I didn't know much of anything that was going on.
Silas, my father. They were hiding something.
And now, Xavier too.
MIA“What are you talking about? What do you mean you want to go back home? When you say home, what do you mean?” He knew damn well what I meant but he just liked playing dumb. I was seated in his office at home, seeing him for the first time in almost two weeks. He had obviously been very busy with work, I could tell from the dark circles around his eyes. Even with me standing in front of him, he was still focused on a file in his hands. “I mean I'd like to go back to the pack. There's something I need to get there.” His frown deepened. “What is so important that you have to go back to the pack for? Tell me, I'll send someone back there to bring you whatever you want.”Somehow, I already knew he was going to say that but there was no way I would let my father trick me into staying here. What I wanted to do back home was very important to me, hence the reason for the trip. “Dad, I need to go there myself. It's very pertinent that I see to it myself. It's really very important to
XAVIERWe stayed in one corner of the house, deep in the night. We had to be really careful to make sure that no one was still awake or able to hear what we were talking about. I stood at the corner while Marissa was busy trying to get him to come see me. They were supposed to come here thirty minutes ago but they were nowhere in sight and I couldn't call her because it was risky. My heart was beating because with the way my father was losing sleep over this issue, it would be very easy for him to walk down to my room to speak to me. I kept peaking out of the corner to see if they were coming but I couldn't even hear footsteps. The next thing was to call her because the more time we spent, the riskier it became. As soon as her phone started to ring, I heard footsteps down the hall. I put my phone back into my pocket to stop the light coming from my screen. “What took you so long? I was starting to get worried.” She was panting heavily. “I'm so sorry. My dad stopped me to talk
XAVIER“What did he tell you?”She closed the door properly before turning to me. “He said the wedding must happen by the weekend. That's in two days. We need to find a way to call it off.”Madison and I have reached some kind of agreement. When I confronted her about the fact that I knew she didn't want to marry me, she didn't deny it. Instead, the first thing. She asked was how we would convince our fathers to see the same.I didn't ask her who she was in love with but the fact that I knew she didn't want to marry me was enough for me to work hard enough to see that this thing didn't happen. “Two days is time for us to think of something. Your boyfriend…is he ready? All you have to do is say the word and I'll help you get passports and everything you need to start a new life abroad.”She looked happy but at a loss. “That would have been the best option but he's hesitant. He has family here and they mean a lot to him. He doesn't want to leave them here. Coupled with the fact that
MIAIn my bid to get my life back on track, I decided to focus on the one thing my life centered around. Getting to know and under my powers. Right now, the only person who could help me do that was Magma. From what I know, I was going to have to get My Book it Spells from my father. The last time I asked him about it, he said he didn't know what I was talking about. At that point, it did sound like he was telling the truth but I hadn't been focused since I was in the hospital. Maybe I should bring it up again so that I'd be sure of his answer. Last night, I reached out to him to tell him that I was fine and I'd be going to school the next day. He waited a moment before responding, breathing heavily into the phone as if he was trying to think of an answer to give me. Eventually, he responded. “That’s good. You should return to school. How are you doing?”“Good…good. Do you need anything?”Yes. A hug, maybe some ice cream. “No, I'm good. Just wanted to let you know. Also, I wa
MIAFor the first time in almost a week, I turned on my phone. I'd left the house and rented an apartment on the opposite side of the city, far away from everyone I knew. It's not like I wanted to clear my head. No, I was running away from the truth. What I'd heard, my heart couldn't take it. After my father had told me what Xavier had heard in the office, a huge part of my heart was broken but the part that wanted to believe him and everything we'd been through told me that it was a lie and that I was imagining things. So I decided to go see him and confront him about it. Even though I knew that his father would be there and most probably make things hard for the both of us, I decided to go and hear him out so I won't just hear from everyone besides him. Maybe I should have just left the house without stopping by Falcon's room but the universe didn't want me to keep making a fool of myself so I overheard the conversation. She was on the phone with him when I heard her mutter. “S
XAVIERDinner was just half an hour long but it felt like it was an eternity. Mainly because I and Marissa were the central focus. Our fathers hammered us with questions that we didn't know what to answer because it made us very uncomfortable. Half of my attention was on Marissa because unlike before, she was quiet even when her father teased her about finally getting married to me. She didn't say anything, barely smiled and just poked at her food. It made me think about earlier times in the garden. She was quiet and I had to be the one who kept pushing a conversation. At one point when we stood close, she moved away as if trying to maintain distance between us. Was she disgusted by me now and did she finally want to move on? It made me think about the whole thing but I didn't want to mount pressure on it just yet. “Xavier, your father has told me that you're very serious about Marissa and I've seen things for myself. I think it's time I huh emh blessing. After all, it's been lo
XAVIERNeither of us said anything during the ride. When we pulled up to the pack house, my father was already waiting on the porch. His expression was grim.I helped a trembling Mia out of the car. Her hands tightened on mine as we walked up the porch. My father’s eyes moved between us. He barely

MIA“Did you have to learn to do everything yourself?” I asked. “After your mom died?”“Pretty much. My dad wasn’t exactly the nurturing type.” He dried a plate. “Falcon helped though.”“You’re close with her.”“She’s the closest I have to family–” He shrugged. “She’s been there for every important
CHAPTER 52: AlmostMIAI woke up warm. That was the first thing I noticed, even before my eyes fluttered open. Not the ache in my body or the dull throb in my wrists. Just warmth and the steady rise and fall of a chest beneath my cheek. We’d fallen asleep on the couch. I was curled against his side
