Mag-log inXAVIER
Kane was trying to claw his way out of my chest.
GO BACK. FOLLOW HER. PROTECT HER.
“No,” I muttered, pacing my apartment like a caged animal. “We can’t. She’s human. She’s engaged. She has her own problems and we have ours.”
OURS. SHE’S OURS.
“She’s not anyone’s,” I growled. “And especially not ours. She doesn’t even know what we are, and she can never find out.”
A knock at my door interrupted the internal argument that had been raging in my head for the past three days.
Falcon didn’t wait for an invitation. My best friend and unofficial Beta, Falcon let herself in with the spare key I’d given her years ago, carrying two coffees and wearing an expression that said she wasn’t leaving until we talked.
“You look like hell,” she observed, dropping onto my couch and pushing one of the coffees toward me. “Actually, you look worse than hell. You look like hell’s hungover cousin who got hit by a truck.”
“Thanks, Falcon. Real supportive.”
“I’m serious, X. You’ve been weird all week. Snapping at pack members, spacing out during training, and yesterday you nearly shifted in the middle of the weight room because someone dropped a barbell too close to your feet.” She leaned forward, her dark eyes sharp and searching. “Your father called me this morning asking if you were sick or if there was a problem he needed to know about.”
“What did you tell him?”
“That you were fine, of course. Just stressed about school.” She took a sip of her coffee. “But we both know that’s bullshit. So talk to me. What’s really going on?”
I sank into the chair across from her, running my hands over my face. The stubble on my jaw reminded me I hadn’t bothered to shave in days. I hadn't bothered to do much of anything except try to ignore the howling in my head.
“I found my mate,” I said finally.
She didn’t say anything for a moment. Then she gasped loudly.
“Holy shit.”
“Yeah.”
“Who is she? Is she pack? From another territory?” Falcon set down her coffee, suddenly all business. “Please tell me she’s not from the Western pack because your father will lose his mind if you’re trying to mate across territory lines—”
“She’s human.”
She froze, her mouth hanging open. “What?”
“She’s human. A transfer student. One hundred percent human.” I laughed, but it sounded bitter even to my own ears. “And completely, absolutely off-limits.”
“Xavier, that’s not possible. Wolves don’t mate with humans. It doesn’t work that way. The bond can’t form unless—”
“I know what the rules are, Falcon. I know what’s supposed to be possible.” I stood, resuming my pacing because sitting still felt like trying to cage lightning. “But I’m telling you, the moment I saw her, Kane claimed her. And every second I’m around her, it gets worse. The pull. The need. The absolute fucking certainty that she’s mine.”
“Shit.” Falcon leaned back, processing. “Does she know? About you?”
“No. And she can never find out.”
“Why not?”
“Because she’s engaged to some asshole who terrifies her. Because her father has security teams tracking her movements. She ran away from her own engagement party and she’s trying to survive the next three months until they drag her back.” I stopped pacing, meeting Falcon’s eyes. “And because my father would kill us both if he found out.”
That made Falcon go still in a way that meant she understood exactly how serious I was.
“You really think he’d go that far?”
“You know how he feels about anything that threatens pack security, weakness and divided loyalties.” I laughed again. “A human mate? He’d see it as the ultimate betrayal. Proof that I’m not fit to lead.”
He has been looking for reasons and this would be the perfect one.
“So what are you going to do?”
“Stay away from her. Let her make the team because she earned it, she’s good enough. I’ll treat her like any other player and keep my distance.”
It sounded impossible even to my own ears but I had to make myself believe it. “As long as I can ignore Kane’s howling until eventually he accepts that we can’t have her, I'll be fine.”
Falcon’s eyes soften and she reaches a hand toward me. I kept pacing. “Xavier—”
“What choice do I have?” I turned to face her, knowing the desperation showed in my eyes. “I can’t claim her. I can’t tell her what I am. And I sure as hell can’t protect her from whatever mess she’s running from without making everything infinitely worse.”
Falcon was quiet for a long moment.
“This is going to destroy you,” she said finally. “Being near her and not being able to claim her. Your wolf won’t stop. It’ll just get worse. Every day, every interaction, the bond will get stronger until you can’t control it anymore.”
“I know. That is the only way and I have to learn to live with it.”
“Unless…” I paused hearing Falcon’s voice. Knowing exactly what she was going to say. “Unless, you challenge your father for the alpha position.”
MIASilas escaped. The words echoed in my head. Over and over. Getting louder each time until his name was all I could hear.My chest felt tight and my heart was heavy. Like someone had wrapped a band around my ribs and was pulling it tighter and tighter.I opened my mouth, to breathe, to speak? I wasn’t sure. Nothing came out.“Mia?” Xavier’s voice sounded far away. “Mia, look at me.”I couldn’t. I couldn’t bring myself to so much as blink. All I could see was Silas standing in that doorway, his cold eyes pinned on me with that twisted smile on his lips.‘What I want is you. As my wife. Obedient. Compliant. The way you should have been from the beginning.’His hand grabbing my chin and forcing me to look at him.‘When he comes, I’ll kill him. And then you’ll have no one left to run to.’My breathing came faster. Each breath felt like I was trying to suck air through a straw. He has escaped. He’s going to come back for me.“Mia!” Xavier’s hands were on my face now. “Baby, you need to
MIA“Did you have to learn to do everything yourself?” I asked. “After your mom died?”“Pretty much. My dad wasn’t exactly the nurturing type.” He dried a plate. “Falcon helped though.”“You’re close with her.”“She’s the closest I have to family–” He shrugged. “She’s been there for every important moment of my life.”“That’s nice. Having someone like that.”He turned to look at me. “You have that now too. With me.”My breath caught. He dried his hands and walked over. Pulled out the chair beside me and sat down.He was so close I could see the gold flecks of his irises very clearly now.“Can I ask you something?” he said.I nodded, unable to form words with him so close.“When you ran from Silas. What made you finally do it? You were with him for years.”I looked down at my hands. “I was in that hall, listening to everyone talk about how we looked good together. How I was lucky to be marrying into their family,” I felt the urge to gag but I held it back, “I couldn’t breathe. Like the
CHAPTER 52: AlmostMIAI woke up warm. That was the first thing I noticed, even before my eyes fluttered open. Not the ache in my body or the dull throb in my wrists. Just warmth and the steady rise and fall of a chest beneath my cheek. We’d fallen asleep on the couch. I was curled against his side, my head on his chest. His arm was wrapped around me, holding me close.I lifted my head slowly, careful not to wake him. But his eyes opened anyway. Alert and locked on mine.“Hey,” he said softly. His voice was rough with sleep. It made my stomach flutter and a flush that had nothing to do with his warm chest spread from my chest to my face.“Hey.” I replied, my voice sounding soft.We stared at each other for a moment, not speaking but somehow communicating. Our hearts were beating in sync, I could feel it.The way we fit, it was too perfect. Simple logic didn’t explain the connection I felt to him. It made me want to learn about the mate bond thing.Xavier moved, pulling me from my thou
MIAI sat in the backseat of the SUV, wrapped in a blanket someone had given me. Xavier sat beside me, so close our thighs touched. He hadn’t let go of my hand since we got in the car. His thumb traced small circles on my palm. Like he needed to keep touching me to make sure I was real.I understood the feeling. My body ached. My wrists burned where the ropes had cut into my skin. The bruise on my cheek throbbed. But we are together now.I glanced at Xavier. His jaw was tight. His eyes fixed straight ahead. He hadn’t said much since we left the field, he only held my hand and stayed close.Falcon was driving. Xavier’s father sat in the passenger seat. Neither of them spoke either. The silence felt heavy, even a little suffocating.I wanted to ask questions, to know what happened to Silas and understand what he meant about my father. But I was too tired and overwhelmed to do so much as speak. After what felt like hours but was probably only thirty minutes, we pulled up to a house.“Whe
XAVIERThe remaining three men scattered across the field, trying to find cover.Silas dove to the side, shouting orders I couldn’t hear over the ringing in my ears.My eyes drifted to Mia who was still on her knees, her hands tied, completely exposed. My only goal was to get to her and get her out of this place.I didn’t think before I moved, shifting mid-run. I landed on my feet and continued the rest of the way.I positioned myself between her and the gunfire just as a bullet whizzed past my ear.Mia let out a small yelp, followed by a sharp intake of breath. I glanced at her urgently to make sure she was fine. Nothing was amiss. Then I returned my attention back to the scene unfolding in front of me.“Xavier,” I heard her whisper. As much as I wanted to turn and hold her close and tell her everything isgoing to be alright. I couldn’t do any of that right now.More gunshots coming from the tree line made relief wash over me. They are finally here. Two more of Silas’s men went down
XAVIERThe drive to the meeting point felt like the longest hour of my life.I sat in the back of the SUV, my father driving, Falcon in the passenger seat. Two more vehicles followed behind us with pack warriors. But they’d stay back. Hidden. This had to look like I was coming alone. My leg bounced restlessly. My hands kept clenching and unclenching.“Stop,” my father said without looking at me. “You’re making everyone nervous.”I didn’t stop. The bond in my chest was so faint now I could barely feel it. Like a candle flame about to go out. What if he’d already hurt her? What if she was—No. I couldn’t think like that. She was alive. She had to be alive.“Xavier.” Falcon turned to look at me. “You remember the plan, right?”“Yes.”“Say it back to me.”I gritted my teeth. “I go in alone. Make the exchange. You wait for my signal.”“And if things go wrong?”“They won’t.”“Xavier—”“They won’t,” I repeated, my voice harder.Falcon exchanged a look with my father but didn’t push. The tree
