The Boy Born Beneath the Eclipse

The moon disappeared behind the shadow of the earth on the night the world changed forever.

Across the continent of Elaris, wolves howled.

In the northern kingdoms, packs abandoned their homes and gathered beneath the darkened sky. Alphas felt an unfamiliar pressure in their chests, a restless pull that made their wolves pace beneath their skin.

Betas felt it too, though more faintly.

And the Omegas

The Omegas whispered prayers.

Everyone in Elaris knew what an Eclipse Moon meant.

It had appeared only three times in recorded history.

Each time, something had changed.

Kingdoms had fallen. Ancient packs had risen. Wars had begun.

And according to the oldest prophecy, the next Eclipse would bring the greatest change of all.

For centuries, the people of Elaris had lived according to three secondary designations: Alpha, Beta, and Omega.

Every wolf-blooded person was born with one.

Alphas were the dominant caste. Their bodies were stronger, their senses sharper, and their wolf spirits more powerful. They possessed the ability to project an Alpha aura an instinctive force that could command weaker wolves to submit.

They ruled the kingdoms.

Betas stood between Alphas and Omegas. They possessed ordinary wolf abilities without the commanding dominance of Alphas or the heightened scent and fertility associated with Omegas. Most soldiers, merchants, scholars, and royal advisers were Betas.

Then there were Omegas.

Omegas were rare.

Their senses were unusually sensitive, their scents powerful, and their bodies capable of forming a unique biological bond with an Alpha.

For generations, that difference had been used against them.

In many kingdoms, Omegas were treated as property.

Their marriages were arranged.

Their mates were chosen for them.

Their futures were decided before they were old enough to understand what freedom meant.

But the oldest laws of the Moon said something different.

No bond could own a soul.

Most rulers had conveniently forgotten that part.

Tonight, however, the Moon had not forgotten.

Deep inside the Temple of the Moon Goddess in Valerion, Queen Elara screamed.

Another contraction tore through her body.

"Please..." she gasped, gripping the sheets. "Please, just tell me he's all right."

The elderly Moon Priestess beside her pressed a hand against her forehead.

"He is coming."

Outside the chamber, thunder shook the ancient temple.

King Cassian paced restlessly.

He was an Alpha.

Not an ordinary Alpha, either.

As King of Valerion and leader of one of the continent's largest wolf packs, his presence alone could silence a crowded hall.

But tonight, none of that mattered.

Tonight, he was simply a frightened father.

Another cry came from inside.

Cassian stopped pacing.

Then—

A baby's cry pierced the darkness.

The entire temple went silent.

Even the wolves outside stopped howling.

Cassian's heart nearly stopped.

"He?"

The priestess slowly stepped into the doorway.

Her face was pale.

"My King..."

Cassian rushed toward her.

"What happened?"

She looked at him with something close to fear.

"The child."

Cassian's expression hardened.

"What about my son?"

The priestess swallowed.

"He was born beneath the Eclipse."

Cassian stared at her.

"I know."

"No," she whispered.

"You don't understand."

She stepped aside.

Cassian entered the chamber.

Queen Elara lay exhausted against the pillows, her silver hair spread around her. Tears covered her cheeks, but she was smiling.

In her arms was a tiny baby wrapped in white cloth.

Cassian approached slowly.

"My son..."

Elara looked up.

"Come and see him."

Cassian sat beside her.

The moment he looked at the child, everything inside him went still.

The baby had stopped crying.

His tiny fingers were curled around his mother's thumb.

But there was something else.

A faint silver light glowed beneath his collarbone.

Cassian's eyes widened.

"Elara..."

She looked down.

A crescent-shaped mark had appeared on the baby's skin.

Silver lines curled around it like vines.

The priestess stumbled backward.

"The Moon Seal."

Cassian stood.

"What?"

The priestess dropped to her knees.

"The Moon-Chosen has been born."

Silence filled the room.

Elara's smile disappeared.

"No."

The priestess began trembling.

"It is him."

Cassian stared at his son.

"What does the prophecy say?"

The priestess hesitated.

Then she whispered:

"When the Eclipse claims the moon, an Omega shall be born bearing its blessing."

Cassian's jaw tightened.

"Continue."

"He will unite what was divided..."

The priestess looked toward the window.

"...awaken what was forgotten..."

Her voice shook.

"...and bring every Alpha King to his knees."

Elara pulled the baby closer to her chest.

"No."

Cassian looked at her.

"Elara."

"They will come for him."

He knew she was right.

The moment the prophecy became known, every kingdom would want their son.

Some would want to control him.

Some would want to kill him.

And some would want to claim him as a political weapon.

The priestess continued.

"There is more."

Cassian looked at her.

"What?"

She lowered her head.

"Love freely chosen shall save the world."

A pause.

Then:

"Love taken by force shall destroy it."

Cassian's blood ran cold.

Before he could respond, a horn sounded outside the temple.

Once.

Twice.

Then three times.

The priestess turned toward the door.

"Royal soldiers."

Cassian immediately reached for his sword.

"Whose?"

A violent crash came from the entrance below.

Then another.

Elara's face drained of color.

"They found us."

Cassian looked at the baby.

His son.

His little boy.

The child who had been alive for less than an hour.

Already, the world wanted him.

Cassian drew his sword.

"How many?"

A guard burst into the chamber.

"My King!"

"Report."

"At least fifty soldiers. More are coming."

"Whose army?"

The guard hesitated.

"The Royal Alpha Guard."

Cassian's expression darkened.

"Who commands them?"

The answer came from a voice outside.

"General Varek."

Cassian's hand tightened around his sword.

Of course.

Varek had been waiting for this night.

The door opened.

A tall Alpha entered wearing black armor marked with the silver insignia of the Alpha Council.

General Varek.

Behind him stood heavily armed soldiers.

Varek's eyes immediately went to the baby.

"The Moon-Chosen."

Elara stood despite her weakness.

"You will not touch my son."

Varek smiled coldly.

"Your son is not yours to keep."

Cassian stepped between them.

"Leave."

Varek laughed.

"You know what he is, Cassian."

"I know exactly what my son is."

"Then you know why the Council has come."

"He is an eighteen-minute-old child."

"He is an Omega capable of changing the balance of the entire continent."

Varek's gaze hardened.

"And no kingdom can be permitted to control such power."

Cassian raised his sword.

"You mean no kingdom except yours."

Varek's Alpha aura exploded through the room.

The soldiers behind him lowered their heads instinctively.

Elara felt the pressure immediately.

But Cassian didn't move.

His own Alpha aura surged in response.

The two forces collided.

Windows rattled.

Candles went out.

The baby began crying.

And then something impossible happened.

The moment the child's cry echoed through the temple, both Alphas froze.

A pulse of silver light exploded from the Moon Seal.

Every wolf inside the building dropped to its knees.

Varek stared at the infant in disbelief.

"What..."

The light faded.

Cassian looked at his son.

He understood then.

The prophecy wasn't merely about an Omega.

It was about this Omega.

"Take him," Varek ordered.

The soldiers advanced.

Cassian attacked.

Steel rang through the chamber.

"Go!" Cassian shouted.

Elara stared at him.

"Where?"

"The eastern passage."

"You're coming with us."

Cassian didn't answer.

Elara's eyes filled with tears.

"Cassian."

He looked at her.

For a moment, the King disappeared.

There was no crown.

No kingdom.

No Alpha.

Only a father looking at the woman he loved and the child they had created.

"Take him," he whispered.

"Protect him."

Elara shook her head.

"I won't leave you."

"You have to."

Another soldier rushed forward.

Cassian struck him down.

"Elara!"

She clutched the baby tighter.

Cassian's eyes softened.

"Give our son a life where he can choose who he becomes."

A tear slipped down Elara's cheek.

"What if they find him?"

"They won't."

"What if they do?"

Cassian stepped closer.

He touched the baby's tiny forehead.

His voice broke.

"Then remind him that he was never born to belong to anyone."

The hidden door opened behind them.

Elara stepped toward it.

Cassian caught her hand.

For one final moment, their eyes met.

Then he kissed her forehead.

"Live."

Elara sobbed.

Cassian looked at his son.

"Live free, my son."

She disappeared into the passage.

The stone door closed.

Cassian turned back toward Varek.

His expression changed.

The softness vanished.

The King of Valerion returned.

"You will not take my family."

Varek smiled.

"We'll see about that."

Cassian raised his sword.

And the battle began.

Far beneath the temple, Elara ran.

Her body screamed with every step, but she refused to stop.

The baby cried against her chest.

"Shh..."

She kissed his forehead.

"Please, my little moon."

Behind her, the sounds of battle grew louder.

Then

A distant roar shook the tunnel.

Elara stopped.

Cassian.

Her knees nearly gave way.

But the baby stirred.

The silver mark beneath his collarbone glowed again.

Elara looked down.

"Kael."

She had finally chosen his name.

"Your name is Kael."

The baby opened his eyes.

For the first time, Elara saw them clearly.

Silver.

Bright silver.

The exact color of the Eclipse Moon.

She held him closer.

"You will survive."

Her voice trembled.

"You will grow up free."

Another roar echoed behind her.

Elara turned toward the darkness.

She knew they were coming.

The soldiers.

The Council.

The kingdoms.

Every Alpha who believed an Omega existed to be claimed.

But none of them understood the final line of the prophecy.

Love freely chosen shall save the world.

And somewhere beyond the mountains, an ancient wolf opened its eyes.

It had been sleeping for centuries.

Until tonight.

Until the Moon-Chosen was born.

The wolf lifted its head toward the Eclipse.

And howled.

Kael had entered the world.

And the world would never be the same again.
