The Kingdom Between Worlds

The howling grew louder.

It came from beyond the silver forest, rolling across the strange kingdom like thunder.

Kael stood frozen beside Lucien.

The ancient king remained at the top of the marble stairs, his silver robes moving gently despite the absence of wind.

“Who are they?” Kael asked.

“The Hollow Wolves.”

Rowan's face went pale.

“You said they were destroyed.”

The ancient king looked at him.

“They were never destroyed.”

Rowan swallowed.

“They were sealed.”

“Exactly.”

Kael looked between them.

“What are the Hollow Wolves?”

The king descended another step.

“Once, they were wolves like us. Alphas, Betas, Omegas. They lived under the Moon's law.”

His expression darkened.

“Then the first kings discovered that the Moon Bond could be manipulated.”

Lucien's jaw tightened.

“Manipulated how?”

“They tried to create loyalty through force.”

Kael's stomach turned.

The king continued.

“They wanted every Omega bound to an Alpha. They wanted every pack to obey a single ruler. They believed the Moon had created a hierarchy.”

Kael whispered, “But it didn't.”

“No.”

The king's eyes settled on him.

“The Moon created differences. Wolves created oppression.”

Kael felt something inside him shift.

For years, he had wondered why being an Omega had made people look at him differently.

Now he understood.

It had been power that others had decided they had the right to control.

The king continued.

“The Moon Kingdom opposed them. That war nearly destroyed our world.”

Lucien stepped forward.

“And the Hollow Wolves?”

“They refused to die.”

The king pointed toward the distant mountains.

“They abandoned their bodies and allowed dark magic to consume their wolf spirits. They became creatures that could exist between worlds.”

Darius frowned.

“So they cannot be killed?”

“They can.”

The king's eyes hardened.

“But not by ordinary weapons.”

Kael looked at the Moon Seal on his chest.

“By me?”

The king didn't answer immediately.

That silence was enough.

Kael exhaled.

“Of course.”

Lucien glanced at him.

“You don't have to do this alone.”

Kael looked at him.

“You keep saying that.”

“Because you keep trying to carry everything alone.”

Kael's expression softened.

“And you keep following me.”

Lucien gave a faint smile.

“Perhaps my wolf has good instincts.”

Kael almost laughed.

The ancient king turned toward the forest.

“You heard it too?”

He stepped closer but stopped before touching him.

“Do you want me beside you?”

Kael stared at him.

Not Do you need me?

Not Will you obey me?

Not Are you mine?

Do you want me beside you?

Kael nodded.

“Yes.”

Lucien's eyes softened.

“Then I'm staying.”

The first Hollow Wolf emerged from the forest.

It was enormous.

Its body was blacker than Lucien's wolf, almost as though darkness itself had been given fur.

Silver cracks ran across its chest.

Its eyes glowed white.

It opened its mouth.

A sound came out that was neither howl nor growl.

It was something older.

Something unnatural.

Several wolves behind Kael dropped to their knees.

The creature charged.

Lucien shifted.

Kael followed.

Two wolves rushed forward together.

The Hollow Wolf struck Lucien first.

Lucien flew across the marble ground.

“Lucien!”

Kael attacked.

His claws struck the creature's shoulder.

Nothing happened.

The Hollow Wolf turned.

It slammed Kael against the ground.

Pain exploded through his body.

He tried to move.

The creature raised its claws.

Then stopped.

“How did they find us?”

The king turned toward Kael.

A massive bell rang.

The silver castle began to tremble.

Then the doors opened.

Beyond them stood hundreds of ancient wolves.

All of them bowed their heads when Kael appeared.

And a pair of golden eyes appeared beyond it.
