LOGINKieran’s POV
I looked on with a satisfied smirk as red-hot jealousy tore Lady Seraphina from the inside out. What is a potentially powerful Luna, if she has to fight for the love of her much desired Alpha with a lowly Omega?
She stared hard and clenched her teeth. “Until you say so?"
I didn't reply. I only stared back.
She dropped Lyra’s hand carelessly and stomped towards me, angry, but trying to keep it together. She glared at me with glassy eyes.
“So, it's true after all?"
My thoughts paused and redirected themselves.
What was ‘It’ exactly? Whatever it was, it means a whole lot of scandal to me.
“Believe everything you hear, Lady Seraphina ,” I taunted.
She took another step, almost closing the gap between us completely. Her cheeks shone red, but I didn't let my gaze falter. She should have abandoned the idea of being my Luna since the day I first rebuffed her show of affection towards me.
Desperation still filtered densely out of her voice. She was choking back a tear
“You dare humiliate me before all these lowlifes because of that filthy Omega?"
My eyes trailed her index finger and fell on My Lyra once more. The poor thing quickly lowered her eyes and looked away.
This very occasion should have been one of so much great pride for her had she not been an Omega. Now, it would only count as a thing of shame for her.
I returned my gaze to Lady Seraphina . The pain was now too much for her to bear.
"Omega, she is; but filthy? I think not,” I said, trying to protect My Lyra against the Pack force. "It's those who feign interest in my affairs because they have eyes for the throne that should be considered filthy.”
I raised a brow as I watched her expression shift from pained to lost to angry, and finally guilty.
"Whatever that meant, Alpha Kieran, I think I am way beneath it,” she made a sloppy attempt at self defense.
I'd always sensed the strife silent, but with much more negative energy since the last mating ceremony. I'm sure there is more to come. I made a low, guttural laugh to increase the scorn.
“You may leave now, Lady Seraphina . I can handle the rest," I said but I could see how angry and livid she was, and that ignited the fire within me.
A silent storm formed in her eyes, some omegas trembled, sensing the tension in the air. She stomped out not without looking back at Lyra, who was quivering where she sat.
I approached to help her up but she quickly jumped to her feet, her head still bowed, and her scattered locks of hair shielding her face.
“I'm fine, Alpha. I can manage myself."
Her despair was so palpable that I wanted to hold her and savor it out of her completely and all to myself. Her innocence killed me slowly; if only she knew.
“You will return at once to my chamber and finish the cleaning."
She stopped like a dead clock.
“Alpha?"
I rolled my eyes, knowing she had heard me properly the first time.
“You shall continue the cleaning, omega, or you face the consequences of disobeying my orders!" I made sure my voice carried such authority that she doubled over and whimpered.
How fragile!
I looked around at the others.
"Don't you all have something to do?!” I barked. "What are you all still doing here?”
Everyone went running in all directions without saying a word.
But there she was, still kneeling with heavy sobs rolling down her frail body. All I could think of was…
Focus, Kieran.
“Why are you still here?"
She stopped crying and went quiet all of a sudden, her eyes snapped up to meet mine. She feared me after all.
She looked so fragile, broken and helpless. Yet, a part of me remained unmoved.
I knew I had to be firm, but a part of me ached to show her kindness.
“I can't be with you, Alpha. Reject me. I'd rather be marked by a fellow omega than be treated less than trash that I already am because of you."
Heroic.
I let out a painfully mocking laughter and swirled on my heels.
“I'll make sure you are tied to the stake and flogged if I get to my chambers before you and find you not doing what you ought to be doing, right?”
I think the threat worked, because no sooner had I set to return to my room had she staggered back ahead of me.
Silently, the turnout of events amused me.
When she was out of sight, the weight of my decisions made the air above my head heavy.
This is only the beginning. I have stepped on the toes of two council members: Elder Mordecai, and Lady Seraphina . How many other toes did I have to bruise for this cause?
But she is my mate. I will not let her down because of society. Let society be false, and fate be true.
She is my destiny, as I am hers.
“Alpha Kieran!"
I turned to see a guard bowed on one knee before me.
“You may rise."
“Lord Vance requests to see you, Alpha."
The name, and the circumstances of the day left me no choice than to be convinced that this visit was nothing good or peaceful.
“Show him in."
His bulky silhouette walked into the courtroom as the doors were shut behind him. He cleared his throat as he straightened his shoulders, sizing me up with the eyes of a watchful predator.
"Lady Seraphina has reported something unheard of to me, but I refuse to let your noble reputation be tarnished on account of the emotional words of an enraged woman.”
I nodded and chuckled.
"Lord Vance, War General of the Blackfang pack, it is well of you to uphold my character.”
A smirk crossed his lips, and I caught wind of it. Another toe I've stepped on, but not so sorely, I hope.
"This has nothing to do with you, Alpha Kieran. I am only upholding the pillars of the values the Blackfang pack was built on.”
"Is that treason?” I asked, shooting him my most dangerous look, warning him not to cross the line.
"If there's anyone in danger of treason, it would be one who humiliates anyone of noble descent before an Omega.”
The message came clear. I exhaled steadily, doing my best to show no signs of being bothered.
Lord Vance came up to me.
“Even the slightest defect in character and morals, and we, the council, shall produce an even stronger Alpha."
My eyes narrowed into slits as I took in the weight of the threat: Play by the rules of the game, or lose your head for going against them.
Freya’s POV“I said I’m fine,” I repeated, softer this time. She hesitated for a few seconds, then nodded slowly. But I could see the suspicion, the questions crowding her mind, and the growing distance. I turned away before she could read more meaning into my facial expressions.“I need to handle something in the lower quarters,” I said. “I’ll be back very soon.”“Again?” she asked quietly, like the thought of it was already irritating her. Guilt stabbed through me as I tried to pretend all was well.“I won’t be long,” I said, avoiding her gaze, as that would have a way of exposing me.“Freya,” she called before I could leave.I paused in my tracks, waiting to hear what she would say.“If something is wrong…” she said softly, “you’ll tell me everything, right?”My chest started heaving painfully.“I will,” I lied just to get away from her. Then I walked out before she could ask me anything.“Ethan,” I called as I spotted him near the training grounds. He turned, completely surprised.
Freya’s POV“Why were you crying?”Lyra’s red eyes lifted to meet mine, they were swollen from a night that clearly hadn’t given her rest. She sat on the edge of her bed, fingers clenched tightly into the sheets as if they were the only thing holding her together from tearing apart.“I wasn’t crying,” she said quickly, wiping her eyes.I raised a brow, wondering if she took me for a fool. “Lyra...”“I said I wasn’t crying,” she repeated, more firmly this time, even though her voice was literally shaking.I kept quiet, thinking thoroughly about my next words. I exhaled slowly, stepping closer. “Fine. You weren’t crying,” I murmured with a smile. “You just… decided to stare at the wall all night and forget how to blink, right?”Her lips twitched slightly at my little joke, but the sadness didn’t leave her eyes.“Freya…” she whispered, “do you think I’m foolish?”The question caught me off guard, as I wasn't expecting that.“No,” I said immediately. She let out a shaky breath that she ha
Lyra’s POV“And why is that?” he asked.I held his gaze for the longest time, trying to see through him. “Because you’re hiding something from me.”“You’re beginning to imagine things.”“No,” I said quietly, sure of what I’d seen. “I’m noticing things that shouldn’t be there in the first place.”His eyes narrowed slowly for a second.“What things are you talking about?”I hesitated, contemplating how to present it. Suddenly, Freya’s earlier words echoed in my mind.“Watch. Listen. The danger you seek is in the shadows.”That made my pulse quicken.“You avoid looking at me,” I said slowly. “You’re always somewhere else when I’m with you. Always distracted. And when I speak, it’s like you’re only half there most of the time.” He didn’t respond, just kept quiet. So I stepped closer to draw his attention. “And Seraphina,” I added. The moment I said her name, it did what my entire speech couldn’t. His body went rigid, and I knew there was more to it than he was saying.“You haven’t punishe
Lyra’s POV“Why didn’t you do anything till this moment?”Kieran didn’t move or say anything immediately. It was more like he was buying time to figure out how to reply to my question without letting on that something wasn't right since he returned. He stood quietly by the window, his back to me. But the morning light aided in carving his tall frame into something very distant… and unreachable.“Lyra,” he said finally, his voice coming out very low, yet controlled. “This isn’t something you just jump into without making inquiries.”“How you really making inquiries?” I let out a small laugh—which was humourless, by the way. “And this isn’t how you treat someone you call your Luna.”That got his attention as I wanted it to. He turned slowly to face me, his eyes locking onto mine too deeply, and for a second... I saw something that made my heart leap.I was sure it wasn't anger, but something much heavier.“What exactly are you talking about?” he asked softly. That made my chest tighten
Lyra's POV“I mean… I admit there seem to be things about him you may not understand right now,” she said finally, her voice low but heavy with truths she refused to discuss. “And right now, revealing them to you especially now might change everything between us, and even with him.”“Change everything? Freya… are you in any way saying he’s…” I stopped myself, my heart pounding uncontrollably. “Are you saying he might not be as trustworthy as I always consider him to be?”She didn’t answer immediately. Instead, she took a deep breath, closing her eyes for a brief moment as I watched her. “I can’t say that for sure. But all I can say is… you must be careful. Observe keenly from a distance. Listen. Watch for what isn’t said, for what’s in the shadows. That’s exactly where danger hides without anyone suspecting.”“Then give me the chance to be truly careful. Let me watch. Don’t keep me out of this, Freya. I can’t… I can’t stand being blind anymore.”Her eyes opened slowly, carefully study
Lyra’s POV“Freya,” I called cautiously, stepping closer as she organized the trays in the kitchen. “Can I ask you something?”She looked up quickly, her eyes guarded, her hands pausing mid-motion. “Of course. Go ahead,” she said, her voice steady—but something in it made me tense.“It’s about Seraphina,” I said, lowering my voice, unsure how to phrase it without sounding accusatory. “I’ve noticed some things, and no matter how hard I try, I can’t stop thinking about it.”Her eyebrows knitted together slightly, concern flickering across her face. “Not everything you see is what it seems, Lyra,” she said, picking up a tray with deliberate calm and avoiding my gaze.“But it doesn’t feel like that to me,” I pressed, stepping closer. “She’s always around these days. I see traces of her—even her choking perfume, people are whispering out of place. And every time you’re near me, you seem different. Mostly very nervous.”Freya stiffened, but she didn’t turn to face me. “I’m just careful, tha
Saana's POV “What made you think you could speak, even if you knew the truth?" I paused, and retraced my steps.I was just returning from the fields with Ethan, and I saw a door ajar. That particular room was never open during the day. A sparkle of metal in the candle light made me draw nearer,
Kieran's POVMy eyes swept over the nobles in the banquet hall. Vance was missing.Could this be an act of outright disregard for my authority? The dancing and merriment go on for a while. The excitement in Mordecai's eyes sold him out already. Others seemed oblivious of the coming storm.I return
Ethan's POV I fell over when I heard the piercing scream coming from deep within the woods. I had focused hard on this particular wildebeest, but it ran off as I lost balance.I'm not sure Kieran heard that. Since I'd lost the game, I could check out what was wrong with her.I darted out using my
Lyra's POV I wandered into the washing area even before it was bright enough to make out the colour of my own skin. The indigo sky made me feel comfortable in my light night clothes. The chilly air made my hair stand on edge. When I got to the lines, the cloak wasn't there. My eyes widened in horr
