Chapter 1

Author: Melissa Z
For three months, I'd been preparing for the Blood Moon ceremony. Preparing to shield my mate, Alpha Damian, and his fragile pack from the spirits of the damned.

But then he stood before the pack and announced my replacement. His first love, Isla—the woman who left him for dead—would take my place as High Priestess.

Only yesterday, I was on my knees, pouring my soul into the wards for this ceremony.

"Lyra, these wards are a joke."

I looked up. Damian stood behind me, his face a mask of Alpha arrogance.

"What's wrong with them?" I dropped the runic chalk and stood.

The legendary Blood Moon was coming, a once-in-a-century event.

Without my wards, Damian’s pack wouldn't stand a chance.

He might be an Alpha, but he and his pack were the weakest in the North.

Half the time, they couldn't even fight off rogues, forced into one humiliating retreat after another.

This core ward would shield the entire Silver Moon pack from the spirits.

Every single rune was perfect.

"The energy flow is too strong," Damian said, pointing to the center of the array. His voice was sharp with impatience. "My people can't handle this kind of power. You treat us like one of the High Packs, Lyra, not the one you belong to."

I almost laughed.

If they couldn't handle this, they weren't just walking to their deaths.

They were sprinting.

"Damian, this is the bare minimum.

Any weaker, and your wards will be torn to shreds the second the Blood Moon rises."

"You never trust my judgment when it comes to my pack." He turned, his dark eyes filled with that familiar look of accusation. "You're always so stubborn, Lyra. You're getting out of control."

I bit back a retort.

Damian and I had been mated for ten years.

When I first met him, I was just a rogue wolf with a flicker of magic.

After feeling the fated bond between us, I slowly started showing him my power.

Power that was far greater than his.

I knew he wanted to be an Alpha, so I helped him rise.

I helped him lead his pack.

I traded my own power with stronger packs for the resources his people needed to survive.

The cost was staggering. And I paid every price.

Even though I hid my true identity.

As his Luna, I gave this pack everything.

I redrew their wards, repaired their energy nodes, and even used my own blood to strengthen their altar.

All of it was to make sure they received the Moon Goddess's greatest blessing. To make sure he and I would be happy forever.

But over the last year, he’d started acting strange, mocking me whenever I used my power.

"Fine." I knelt again and began to adjust the ward's energy density.

I knew this would weaken it, but at that moment, I was too tired to argue.

"We'll do it your way."

"One more thing," Damian's voice suddenly went stiff. "Isla is coming back."

My hand froze. "What?"

"She's going to assist with the ceremony. She's an expert in traditional shamanism. It will be a great help to us."

Isla.

The she-wolf who grew up with Damian, then abandoned him when things got tough.

The one with so-called "pure-blood magic."

I slowly stood up. "When did you decide this?"

"She wrote to me a month ago. I thought it was a great opportunity to make our ceremony perfect."

A month ago. He was telling me now, three days before the ceremony I had lost sleep over for three months.

"Damian, the preparations are done. Bringing someone new in now will throw the entire ritual off balance. It could be a disaster."

"It won't," he said, his tone firm. "Actually, I want Isla to be the High Priestess."

My blood ran cold. "What did you say?"

"Her connection is better for speaking with the Goddess. Your skills are needed for the outer defenses."

The High Priestess. The very heart of the ceremony.

The sacred position at the center of the altar, protected by the entire pack, who speaks directly to the Goddess.

That spot, as his Luna, was mine by right.

"You mean, you want me on outer defense?"

"The outer defense is critical," he said, refusing to meet my eyes. "The spirits are a real threat. We need our most powerful warrior out there."

I stared at him, at the man I once loved so deeply. "So I'm being demoted from High Priestess to… bait?"

"I'm trusting you with the most dangerous part," he said. The casual pride in his voice was a dull knife twisting in my heart.

Outer defense meant facing all the evil summoned by the Blood Moon. Alone.

He wanted me to use my life to buy time for the core ceremony.

If I weren't as powerful as I was, it would be a death sentence.

"You've already discussed this with your parents, haven't you?" I asked.

"They've agreed," Damian answered, so quickly it was like he'd rehearsed it. "They trust Isla's blood magic. It's our pack's tradition. Your magic… we don't know where it comes from."

Questionable origins?

I healed this polluted land, making life flow through it again.

I spent immense amounts of my magic to rebuild their sacred grounds.

And now, all of it was dismissed as "questionable."

Footsteps echoed from the stairs.

Damian's parents were coming down.

"Lyra," his mother, the elder Reina, said, her voice dripping with a condescending dislike. "This isn't a question of your abilities."

"But Isla's shamanic bloodline is the traditional power our pack recognizes," his father cut in, not bothering to hide his contempt. "Her magic can awaken the soul of the land and speak with our ancestors."

Awaken the soul of the land?

I poured my soul into this land!

"So," I looked at the three of them, my voice turning to ice. "You're making an outsider the High Priestess… and throwing your Luna to the wolves?"

Damian collapsed to the floor. He finally understood who he had betrayed. The daughter of the Wolf King. The most noble bloodline in the entire North. He had betrayed a royal princess.A council official began preparing the contract-dissolution documents.Isla scrambled to her feet. Panic flashed in her eyes."Wait! The curse never happened! But I carry Damian's child! His heir! You can't punish an unborn pup!"A cunning woman. She knew the greatest taboo among wolves was harming a pup.The Alphas below began to murmur. Some of them looked at me with doubt in their eyes."Isla is right," an old elder stood up. "Whatever has happened, the child is innocent.""And that child carries the blood of the Silver Moon Pack," another elder added. "It has a right to its inheritance."I looked at these foolish old men. Then I smiled."Do you all really think I'm going to change my mind because of an unborn child?"I finished signing the dissolution papers but didn't leave the hall.Instead, I walk

I didn't even spare Isla a glance.I just softly spoke an ancient syllable:"Silence."Instantly, every shamanic totem on Isla's body went dim.The phony runes painted on her face faded like old tattoos. The bone necklace she wore lost its magical glow and became a cheap ornament."My power..." She stared at her hands in terror. "What did you do to me?""I took back what wasn't yours," I said, walking toward my car without a backward glance.Behind me, I heard Isla and Damian start to argue."You said you'd protect me!" Isla screamed. "You said if I helped you deal with her, you would marry me!""Now is not the time... and you lied to me!" Damian tried to calm her."When is the right time?" Isla shrieked. "After our baby is born? After we use its blood to cast the curse and steal her power? Is that plan even going to work now?"I stopped in my tracks.Bloodline curse.I turned around slowly."What did you just say?"Isla realized she'd let it slip. Her face went pale."I... I didn't sa

When I returned to the manor the next day, they were, of course, still there.Damian took a deep breath and walked out of the house. He was holding an ancient horn.It was jet black and inlaid with a dragon crystal the size of a fist."Lyra," his voice trembled. "The legendary horn, said to command all beasts. I give it to you now, as a sign of my submission."I took the horn and examined it.It looked impressive, but I spotted the flaw instantly."This dragon crystal," I said calmly, "is a fake."Damian's face went white."What?""It's a glass replica." I tapped the crystal. It made a sharp, clear ping. "A real dragon crystal makes a dull thud. And..."I flipped the horn over, pointing to the runes at its base."This isn't a summoning rune. It's a backlash curse, designed to kill whoever blows the horn."The room fell dead silent."Whoever blows this horn will have the magic turn back on them. At best, they'll be severely injured. At worst, they'll die." I stared at Damian's shocked f

"What do you mean? You're not afraid?""Our bond isn't a simple mate pact anymore. It hasn't been for a long time," I said, my voice cold. "Ten years ago, I used a secret art to bind it to a loyalty pact. You were the one who broke your vow, Damian. Any attempt to sever our bond now will only shatter your own soul and strip you of your power."I heard a sharp intake of breath."What secret art? How could you...""Try it," I taunted. "Go on, ask the Moon Goddess to break our bond. Let's see if she punishes the betrayer or helps him."There was a long silence."Lyra, I was wrong," his voice suddenly dropped low. "It was all a misunderstanding. Isla blinded me. I was a fool.""You're just figuring that out?""I admit I hurt you. But it wasn't all my fault," he started shifting the blame. "You were always so secretive, you never told me your real power. If you had just been honest...""Honest?" I sneered. "What did I need to be honest with you about? I gave you ten years of my life, and a

"What?"Isla's shriek came through the crystal."My magic!" Isla shrieked. "You didn't just steal the Font of Power—you stole my power! It's gone!"I couldn't help but sneer. So her pathetic little tricks were all fueled by stealing from the Font."Lyra!" Damian's voice was back. "Give back control of the Font of Power, now! It's our pack's lifeblood!""No.""You can't do this!" he threatened. "I'll report you to the High Council! Stealing a sacred relic is a capital crime!""Stealing?" My voice turned dangerous. "Damian, do you even know the terms of the Font's ancient pact?""What pact?""Only the strongest bloodline can claim it," I said, my words slow and deliberate. "Three months ago, when I healed your dying lands, the Font sensed my blood. It chose a true master.""That's impossible! I'm the Alpha of this land!""Alpha?" I laughed mockingly. "An Alpha who can't protect his own mate? An Alpha who can't even spot a con artist?"I heard a heavy thud on his end of the line."But you

The next morning, my comm crystal wouldn't stop ringing.I slowly brewed a cup of coffee. I savored the long-lost peace on my Evernight City balcony. Only then did I answer the call."Lyra!" Damian's voice was hysterical. "You have to come back! Now!""What's wrong?" I asked, feigning concern. "Wasn't the ritual a success?""Success?" he shrieked, his voice cracking. "It was a complete disaster! Isla's shamanic crap did nothing!"I took a light sip of coffee."That's a shame. But what does it have to do with me? Didn't you say her traditional ways were more reliable?""Stop playing dumb!" he raged. "The ritual can't happen without your wards! Now every pack in the north is laughing at us! The pack members are questioning my leadership!""Then you should talk to Isla about a solution.""Isla can't do anything!" he finally admitted. "Only you can fix this! You have to come back. You have to calm the pack!"I set down my coffee cup."Let me get this straight, Damian. Yesterday, you were
