Chapter 2

Autor: Michelle
“Don’t forget to split the groceries,” Vivienne said, finishing her last bite of foie gras.

Dante tapped his phone. A payment request appeared on mine.

Three hundred and forty dollars and fifty cents.

“For what?”

“The caviar, foie gras, and cherries were two hundred and sixty. The steaks were four hundred and twenty. Potatoes were a dollar.” Vivienne smiled. “Half of six hundred and eighty-one. Perfectly fair.”

“I didn’t eat any of that.”

Dante set his fork down.

“Do you have to nickel-and-dime everything? Vivienne is our guest.”

“You just sent me an itemized bill.”

“Because we’re working on equality.” His voice tightened. “Don’t turn every step forward into a fight.”

Vivienne reached for her phone.

“It’s fine. Dinner’s on me. I don’t want to be the reason you argue.”

She sent Dante the money. He sent it straight back.

“Don’t be ridiculous, Viv. You’re helping us. I’m not charging you for dinner.”

I stared at him.

He could be generous. He still knew how. Apparently, it only became unhealthy when the person receiving it was his wife.

Vivienne closed her notebook.

“Dante cooked, Elena. You can wash up.”

I looked at the gauze around my hands. Gravel had torn both palms when I fell. Blood had seeped through one bandage.

Dante noticed the blood. He took my hand carefully.

“This needs changing.”

He brought the first-aid kit from the kitchen and replaced the wet gauze. His touch was gentle. When I flinched, he stopped.

Vivienne watched him.

“You can care for an injury without taking over her responsibilities. Otherwise, she learns that discomfort cancels every agreement.”

He finished taping the bandage.

“There are gloves under the sink,” he said. “I’ve taken care of your hands. You can still do your part.”

“I can barely hold a glass.”

“Elena, I cooked. We agreed to share the work.”

He was still holding my hand when he said it.

I took it back.

I left the dishes where they were and went upstairs.

The next morning, I found him in his study. His signet ring rested against a stack of business papers. Through the open door, I could see his men waiting in the hall.

I had the hospital instructions and the follow-up estimate with me. Before I could travel, our baby needed those appointments.

I placed both documents on his desk.

“Dante, we need to talk about the baby.”

He leaned back before I could finish.

“Viv said you’d do this. The card gets canceled, and suddenly the baby becomes leverage.”

Vivienne appeared in the doorway with a cup of coffee.

“When someone loses financial control, they reach for the one thing they believe you can’t walk away from.”

“I’m asking you to listen.”

“You’re not the only woman who could give him a child, Elena.”

Dante’s jaw tightened.

“Viv.”

“What? She needs to understand that pregnancy doesn’t exempt her from being a partner.”

Dante moved the coffee away from the papers but left Vivienne standing beside him.

I slid the hospital instructions closer.

“The doctor wants these appointments kept. You know what it took to get this far.”

We had tried for years. Tests, appointments, injections I gave myself in the bathroom before work. Sometimes I would hold the needle over my skin until my hand started shaking, and he would kneel beside me and help.

When the test finally turned positive, he cried into my shoulder. He kept the first ultrasound in his wallet, behind a photograph of us.

His eyes flickered toward that wallet now.

Vivienne stepped closer.

“Your fertility problems weren’t his fault. You can’t keep making him pay emotionally for your medical history.”

“I never said they were.”

“Then you shouldn’t object to sharing the cost.”

She picked up his phone. He let her.

A second request arrived on mine: fertility medication, specialist visits, scans, prenatal appointments. Half of every bill he had once paid without hesitation.

Even our baby’s first heartbeat had become an expense he wanted reimbursed.

Dante bent his head. After a while, he asked, “If she hadn’t come back, would we still—”“You made the decisions.”He flinched.“She could say anything she wanted. You chose to believe her. You chose what to do to me afterward.”“I was trying to make us better.”“I know.”That seemed to hurt him more than if I had called him a liar.“You wanted a perfect marriage. Every time she lowered the score, you punished me until I stopped objecting. Then you called the silence improvement.”His lips trembled.“You can’t give me even one chance to make this right?”“I gave you chances in the kitchen. In your study. In the hospital. On the floor of that shop.”My voice stayed level.“I asked you to call my doctor. You wouldn’t. I asked you to tell the truth about me. You wouldn’t. You don’t get to say I never gave you a chance.”A tear fell onto the table.I waited for him to wipe it away.“The papers, Dante. Please.”He opened the folder beside him.Property records. Account statements. Holdings

The stories spread.“She finds wealthy men whose marriages are in trouble, calls herself a specialist, and tells them everything is their wife’s fault.”“She takes the fees. Then she starts asking for gifts.”“She left London because someone finally checked her credentials.”The comments beneath my post changed just as quickly.“His wife fed him when he had nothing.”“He believed a stranger’s spreadsheet over seven years with her.”“Not a stranger. Apparently that made it worse.”“She helped him build a life, and he punished her for living in it.”Vivienne lost her clients. Complaints became lawsuits. The jewelry she had taken was recovered through the attorneys, including my grandmother’s bracelet.Dante’s respectable businesses suffered too. Partners wanted reassurance. Directors wanted meetings. His men wanted instructions. For weeks, he barely answered them. Then one night, my phone lit up.We need to discuss the divorce. I won’t sign the settlement without seeing you.I had left e

“Get her back?”His voice made Vivienne stop.“You still think I’m going to listen to you?”“I wanted to help. I’ve helped so many couples. Everything I suggested was supposed to make you happier.”He looked at the notebook on the floor.“I thought she was using you,” she continued. “I was wrong. I admit that. But I never meant for the baby to die.”“Did you pay to promote those videos?”She went still.“The boutique. The clip from the club. Did you pay them?”“Dante, please let me explain.”“Did you?”“I thought your marriage was going to be a success story. I wanted people to see that my methods worked.”He took a step closer.“What university?”“What?”“The doctorate. The training you told me about. Where did you get it?”She swallowed.“We’ve known each other since we were children.”“That isn’t an answer.”“I used to bring you breakfast before school. I stood by you when—”“When?” he asked. “When I had no money? When Elena was working until she could barely stand? Where were you t

The comments were moving too fast to read.Vivienne gripped Dante’s sleeve.“Please. Help me clear this up. Tell them the recording is fake. AI can make anything now.”He stared at her.“When we get back, I’ll talk to Elena. I can fix this. Just don’t let these people destroy me.” Her voice broke. “I’m scared.”“You’re scared.”He repeated it quietly. Then he took the phone she was using to stream and threw it into the sea.The broadcast ended. He left her on the beach and went back to the villa. The next attachment was the discharge summary. Then a photograph of the small hospital keepsake box. Inside were the footprints of a son he would never hold.Luca.They had chosen that name together.Dante remembered kneeling on the nursery floor with paint on his cuff. He remembered arguing that the crib should be moved because the morning sun might fall across the baby’s face.He had ordered things from three countries. He had told his men that nobody was to wake Elena, no matter what happen

I took my suitcase and flew to Portland. On the beach, the livestream was still running.“What if your wife’s had enough?” a viewer asked. “What if she actually leaves?”Dante hesitated.Vivienne didn’t.“She won’t. She’s writing a public apology as we speak. Check back this week.”She smiled into the lens.“Using a pregnancy to manipulate someone is unacceptable. She needs to own that.”A comment flashed past.“His wife just posted. You need to read it.”Vivienne looked pleased.“Told you.”Dante reached for his own phone. For an instant, his shoulders loosened. Then the comments multiplied.“It’s not an apology.”“There’s a hospital report. They lost the baby.”“He pushed his pregnant wife. Watch the full clip she linked.”“Seven years together. She worked three jobs for him.”The color drained from his face.“No,” Vivienne said softly, moving out of the camera’s view. “This is another escalation. Don’t fall for it.”He opened the message I had sent him.The first thing he saw was th

Then she goes hunting at a private club when her husband won’t hand over cash. Book a consultation to learn the warning signs before someone like this destroys your life.”The boutique posted its own clip.It began with my hand around Vivienne’s wrist. It cut straight to the shattered display.“This woman tried to sell us counterfeit designer goods. When her husband confronted her, she wrecked a five-thousand-dollar cabinet. We’re still waiting for payment.”My face was clear in every frame. My swollen belly was visible beneath my coat.Strangers called me a gold digger. A scammer. A disgrace to my husband.I sat outside the examination room and called Dante.“Vivienne posted a video saying I went to the club to find another man. I was collecting equipment for a job.”“I know you wouldn’t go looking for another man, Elena.”“Then have her take it down.”“I’ll s
