Chapter 3

Author: Michelle
The total was twenty-seven thousand dollars.

“Dante, you froze the account I use. You know I don’t have that.”

Dante rubbed his forehead.

“I’ve given you so much, Elena. Why is meeting me halfway such an insult?”

My phone rang before I could answer. It was Mom.

I put her on speaker because my hands hurt too much to keep holding it.

“Sweetheart, I spoke to the specialist’s office, like you asked. The private care plan comes to eight thousand. I can send five. Can Dante cover the other three?”

She meant the monitoring and follow-up care my doctor wanted arranged, the support Dante had canceled with a phone call.

His head came up.

“Has something changed with the baby?”

For one second, I thought he would finally listen.

Then Vivienne laughed.

“Oh, Dante. First the fertility bills, now her mother calling with a crisis. This is exactly what we discussed.”

Mom went quiet.

“Mrs. Ward,” Vivienne said brightly, “we’re trying to help Elena become less dependent. Calling in reinforcements doesn’t help.”

“This is for their baby.”

“Then Elena should want to contribute.”

Dante held out his hand for the phone.

“I’ll call the doctor,” I said. “She can explain why she recommended the care plan.”

Vivienne put her notebook on his desk.

“The hospital discharged her, Dante. Now she’s asking for an eight-thousand-dollar private package. You need to separate a medical emergency from a request for preferential treatment.”

“The doctor recommended it,” I said.

“And you’ve brought your mother in to make refusing it sound cruel.”

Dante looked at the estimate.

“If there’s an emergency, I’ll handle it. But we agreed to split these expenses, Elena. Having your mother ask doesn’t change that.”

Three thousand dollars. Less than he had spent on one bottle of wine the week before.

Mom’s voice became painfully careful.

“Elena, don’t argue. I’ll see what else I can move around. Your father’s old truck might be worth something.”

“No, Mom. Keep the truck. I’ll find the rest.”

I ended the call before she heard me cry.

“When your uncle shut you out, she emptied her savings for us,” I told Dante. “She sent groceries because she knew I was skipping meals. Don’t speak to her like that again.”

His face softened. He came around the desk and wiped a tear from my cheek.

“I know what she did for us. I haven’t forgotten.”

“Then let her keep her truck.”

“She will.” His thumb moved gently over my skin. “Elena, I love you. I’m trying to make sure we never go back to fighting about money.”

Vivienne opened her notebook.

“Her mother calls, she cries, and now you’re about to reverse the agreement. That’s the pattern we’re trying to change.”

I picked up the medical papers.

Dante frowned.

“Where are you going?”

“To arrange the appointments.”

“We haven’t finished talking.”

“You have the estimate and the doctor’s number. Let me know what you decide.”

Vivienne made another mark.

“Walking away when she can’t control the outcome.”

Dante looked at the page, then at me.

“This won’t improve our score, Elena.”

I put the papers in my bag and left.

By noon I had called the hospital’s billing office about assistance, requested the specialist’s payment-plan forms, and asked my mother not to sell anything yet.

None of it put three thousand dollars in my hands that afternoon.

I canceled Friday’s flight and put the seven hundred dollars toward my care. I would rebook as soon as the doctor cleared me.

Then I called Mom.

“Can you find a specialist near you? I’ll need somewhere to continue the appointments.”

“Of course. Your room’s ready whenever you can come.”

After we hung up, I opened my closet.

Dante had given me bags, necklaces, earrings. Before Vivienne returned, every occasion came with a velvet box.

I packed them all.

My abdomen ached as I carried the bag downstairs. I stopped on the landing until the pain eased, then called a cab to an upscale consignment boutique.

I told myself there was no shame in selling a gift to help our baby.

The woman behind the counter examined the first necklace, then the second.

She gave me a pitying smile.

“Honey. These are fake.”

Dante bent his head. After a while, he asked, “If she hadn’t come back, would we still—”“You made the decisions.”He flinched.“She could say anything she wanted. You chose to believe her. You chose what to do to me afterward.”“I was trying to make us better.”“I know.”That seemed to hurt him more than if I had called him a liar.“You wanted a perfect marriage. Every time she lowered the score, you punished me until I stopped objecting. Then you called the silence improvement.”His lips trembled.“You can’t give me even one chance to make this right?”“I gave you chances in the kitchen. In your study. In the hospital. On the floor of that shop.”My voice stayed level.“I asked you to call my doctor. You wouldn’t. I asked you to tell the truth about me. You wouldn’t. You don’t get to say I never gave you a chance.”A tear fell onto the table.I waited for him to wipe it away.“The papers, Dante. Please.”He opened the folder beside him.Property records. Account statements. Holdings

The stories spread.“She finds wealthy men whose marriages are in trouble, calls herself a specialist, and tells them everything is their wife’s fault.”“She takes the fees. Then she starts asking for gifts.”“She left London because someone finally checked her credentials.”The comments beneath my post changed just as quickly.“His wife fed him when he had nothing.”“He believed a stranger’s spreadsheet over seven years with her.”“Not a stranger. Apparently that made it worse.”“She helped him build a life, and he punished her for living in it.”Vivienne lost her clients. Complaints became lawsuits. The jewelry she had taken was recovered through the attorneys, including my grandmother’s bracelet.Dante’s respectable businesses suffered too. Partners wanted reassurance. Directors wanted meetings. His men wanted instructions. For weeks, he barely answered them. Then one night, my phone lit up.We need to discuss the divorce. I won’t sign the settlement without seeing you.I had left e

“Get her back?”His voice made Vivienne stop.“You still think I’m going to listen to you?”“I wanted to help. I’ve helped so many couples. Everything I suggested was supposed to make you happier.”He looked at the notebook on the floor.“I thought she was using you,” she continued. “I was wrong. I admit that. But I never meant for the baby to die.”“Did you pay to promote those videos?”She went still.“The boutique. The clip from the club. Did you pay them?”“Dante, please let me explain.”“Did you?”“I thought your marriage was going to be a success story. I wanted people to see that my methods worked.”He took a step closer.“What university?”“What?”“The doctorate. The training you told me about. Where did you get it?”She swallowed.“We’ve known each other since we were children.”“That isn’t an answer.”“I used to bring you breakfast before school. I stood by you when—”“When?” he asked. “When I had no money? When Elena was working until she could barely stand? Where were you t

The comments were moving too fast to read.Vivienne gripped Dante’s sleeve.“Please. Help me clear this up. Tell them the recording is fake. AI can make anything now.”He stared at her.“When we get back, I’ll talk to Elena. I can fix this. Just don’t let these people destroy me.” Her voice broke. “I’m scared.”“You’re scared.”He repeated it quietly. Then he took the phone she was using to stream and threw it into the sea.The broadcast ended. He left her on the beach and went back to the villa. The next attachment was the discharge summary. Then a photograph of the small hospital keepsake box. Inside were the footprints of a son he would never hold.Luca.They had chosen that name together.Dante remembered kneeling on the nursery floor with paint on his cuff. He remembered arguing that the crib should be moved because the morning sun might fall across the baby’s face.He had ordered things from three countries. He had told his men that nobody was to wake Elena, no matter what happen

I took my suitcase and flew to Portland. On the beach, the livestream was still running.“What if your wife’s had enough?” a viewer asked. “What if she actually leaves?”Dante hesitated.Vivienne didn’t.“She won’t. She’s writing a public apology as we speak. Check back this week.”She smiled into the lens.“Using a pregnancy to manipulate someone is unacceptable. She needs to own that.”A comment flashed past.“His wife just posted. You need to read it.”Vivienne looked pleased.“Told you.”Dante reached for his own phone. For an instant, his shoulders loosened. Then the comments multiplied.“It’s not an apology.”“There’s a hospital report. They lost the baby.”“He pushed his pregnant wife. Watch the full clip she linked.”“Seven years together. She worked three jobs for him.”The color drained from his face.“No,” Vivienne said softly, moving out of the camera’s view. “This is another escalation. Don’t fall for it.”He opened the message I had sent him.The first thing he saw was th

Then she goes hunting at a private club when her husband won’t hand over cash. It cut straight to the shattered display.“This woman tried to sell us counterfeit designer goods. When her husband confronted her, she wrecked a five-thousand-dollar cabinet.
