Chapter 5

Author: Michelle
“Married to a multimillionaire and still looking for a richer man.”

That was her caption.

“First she fakes a pregnancy crisis. Then she goes hunting at a private club when her husband won’t hand over cash. Book a consultation to learn the warning signs before someone like this destroys your life.”

The boutique posted its own clip.

It began with my hand around Vivienne’s wrist. It cut straight to the shattered display.

“This woman tried to sell us counterfeit designer goods. When her husband confronted her, she wrecked a five-thousand-dollar cabinet. We’re still waiting for payment.”

My face was clear in every frame. My swollen belly was visible beneath my coat.

Strangers called me a gold digger. A scammer. A disgrace to my husband.

I sat outside the examination room and called Dante.

“Vivienne posted a video saying I went to the club to find another man. I was collecting equipment for a job.”

“I know you wouldn’t go looking for another man, Elena.”

“Then have her take it down.”

“I’ll speak to her about the caption.”

“And the boutique’s video. They left out the bracelet and the part where you pulled me.”

“The video makes it look as though I attacked her and smashed the cabinet.”

“Then explain it properly. You grabbed her. I pulled you away. Neither of us handled it well.”

“She took my grandmother’s bracelet.”

“And she shouldn’t have joked about it. I’ve told her that.”

“Has she returned it?”

A pause.

“Elena, this is what Viv means. Every time we try to resolve one issue, you bring up another.”

“It’s the same bracelet.”

“I love you. I know you’re hurt. But I can’t keep being the only one admitting I made a mistake.”

I looked at the examination-room door.

“What are you asking me to admit?”

“Write a proper public apology. Explain what happened, acknowledge your part, and stop threatening divorce. Once you’ve posted the apology, we’ll sit down together.I’ll give you the ten thousand dollars, and we can start fresh.”

I had called about a false accusation. He had given me terms for being forgiven.

“My lawyer will contact you.”

“Elena—”

I ended the call.

Mom arrived from the airport an hour later. She found me in a hospital bed with a monitor strapped around my stomach.

I had started bleeding again.

She put her bag down and held my face in both hands.

“Why didn’t you tell me how bad it was?”

“I was trying to get the appointments arranged before I traveled. The lawyer is preparing the papers. Once the doctor clears me, I’m coming home with you.”

Her phone buzzed. Someone from home had sent her the video.

She watched enough to recognize me, then dropped the phone onto the blanket.

“Where is he?” she asked. “He sent me flowers last week. He signed the card ‘Your son.’ How can he let them do this to you?”

Before I could stop her, she called him.

I reached for my phone and started recording while the call rang on speaker. For once, there would be something they couldn’t tell me I had imagined.

Vivienne answered.

“More money? Isn’t this baby dead yet?”

Mom froze.

“My daughter is in the hospital,” Mom said. “Get Dante.”

“Your daughter has been milking this for days. She’s had three months as Mrs. Moretti, and the whole family thinks they’ve won the lottery.”

“Who do you think you are?”

Mom’s hand shook around her phone.

“Let me speak to my son-in-law.”

A cramp tore through me. I bent forward with a cry.

Mom ended the call and hit the call button.

The room filled with people. A nurse moved the monitor. Another called for the doctor.

I kept asking them to find the heartbeat.

Earlier, it had been there. I had heard it. Surely they only needed to move the sensor a little farther.

The doctor brought in an ultrasound machine.

I watched her face change.

“I’m so sorry, Elena.”

I shook my head.

“No. Check again.”

She did.

My baby was gone.

They treated the bleeding. They explained what had to happen next. I signed the papers with my mother holding my wrist because my hands would not stay still.

Nobody could tell me whether earlier care would have changed the outcome. They could tell me I had suffered a serious injury, and that the pregnancy had deteriorated afterward.

I knew how I had received that injury.

I knew who still wanted me to apologize for it.

Seven days later, Mom and I said goodbye to my son at a small funeral in New York. She took his ashes home to Portland. I stayed behind for one final appointment, then booked another flight to join her.

That morning, Vivienne went live.

“So, Mr. Moretti,” she said, smiling into the camera, “how would you rate my marriage coaching?”

“Ten out of ten.” He looked almost relieved. “I understand my wife much better now. She hasn’t argued in a week. She even sent back the money I transferred.”

I closed the stream.

Then I posted the photographs from our basement years. The bills I had paid. The full security footage my lawyer had obtained from the boutique. The hospital report confirming the loss of our son, with the private details blacked out. Vivienne’s recorded call.

I sent Dante an unredacted copy of the medical confirmation through his private number, along with the separation papers.

[Our son is dead. I’m leaving you.]

That was all I wrote.

Dante bent his head. After a while, he asked, “If she hadn’t come back, would we still—”“You made the decisions.”He flinched.“She could say anything she wanted. You chose to believe her. You chose what to do to me afterward.”“I was trying to make us better.”“I know.”That seemed to hurt him more than if I had called him a liar.“You wanted a perfect marriage. Every time she lowered the score, you punished me until I stopped objecting. Then you called the silence improvement.”His lips trembled.“You can’t give me even one chance to make this right?”“I gave you chances in the kitchen. In your study. In the hospital. On the floor of that shop.”My voice stayed level.“I asked you to call my doctor. You wouldn’t. I asked you to tell the truth about me. You wouldn’t. You don’t get to say I never gave you a chance.”A tear fell onto the table.I waited for him to wipe it away.“The papers, Dante. Please.”He opened the folder beside him.Property records. Account statements. Holdings

The stories spread.“She finds wealthy men whose marriages are in trouble, calls herself a specialist, and tells them everything is their wife’s fault.”“She takes the fees. Then she starts asking for gifts.”“She left London because someone finally checked her credentials.”The comments beneath my post changed just as quickly.“His wife fed him when he had nothing.”“He believed a stranger’s spreadsheet over seven years with her.”“Not a stranger. Apparently that made it worse.”“She helped him build a life, and he punished her for living in it.”Vivienne lost her clients. Complaints became lawsuits. The jewelry she had taken was recovered through the attorneys, including my grandmother’s bracelet.Dante’s respectable businesses suffered too. Partners wanted reassurance. Directors wanted meetings. His men wanted instructions. For weeks, he barely answered them. Then one night, my phone lit up.We need to discuss the divorce. I won’t sign the settlement without seeing you.I had left e

“Get her back?”His voice made Vivienne stop.“You still think I’m going to listen to you?”“I wanted to help. I’ve helped so many couples. Everything I suggested was supposed to make you happier.”He looked at the notebook on the floor.“I thought she was using you,” she continued. “I was wrong. I admit that. But I never meant for the baby to die.”“Did you pay to promote those videos?”She went still.“The boutique. The clip from the club. Did you pay them?”“Dante, please let me explain.”“Did you?”“I thought your marriage was going to be a success story. I wanted people to see that my methods worked.”He took a step closer.“What university?”“What?”“The doctorate. The training you told me about. Where did you get it?”She swallowed.“We’ve known each other since we were children.”“That isn’t an answer.”“I used to bring you breakfast before school. I stood by you when—”“When?” he asked. “When I had no money? When Elena was working until she could barely stand? Where were you t

The comments were moving too fast to read.Vivienne gripped Dante’s sleeve.“Please. Help me clear this up. Tell them the recording is fake. AI can make anything now.”He stared at her.“When we get back, I’ll talk to Elena. I can fix this. Just don’t let these people destroy me.” Her voice broke. “I’m scared.”“You’re scared.”He repeated it quietly. Then he took the phone she was using to stream and threw it into the sea.The broadcast ended. He left her on the beach and went back to the villa. The next attachment was the discharge summary. Then a photograph of the small hospital keepsake box. Inside were the footprints of a son he would never hold.Luca.They had chosen that name together.Dante remembered kneeling on the nursery floor with paint on his cuff. He remembered arguing that the crib should be moved because the morning sun might fall across the baby’s face.He had ordered things from three countries. He had told his men that nobody was to wake Elena, no matter what happen

I took my suitcase and flew to Portland. On the beach, the livestream was still running.“What if your wife’s had enough?” a viewer asked. “What if she actually leaves?”Dante hesitated.Vivienne didn’t.“She won’t. She’s writing a public apology as we speak. Check back this week.”She smiled into the lens.“Using a pregnancy to manipulate someone is unacceptable. She needs to own that.”A comment flashed past.“His wife just posted. You need to read it.”Vivienne looked pleased.“Told you.”Dante reached for his own phone. For an instant, his shoulders loosened. Then the comments multiplied.“It’s not an apology.”“There’s a hospital report. They lost the baby.”“He pushed his pregnant wife. Watch the full clip she linked.”“Seven years together. She worked three jobs for him.”The color drained from his face.“No,” Vivienne said softly, moving out of the camera’s view. “This is another escalation. Don’t fall for it.”He opened the message I had sent him.The first thing he saw was th
