Chapter 4

“Not even good fakes,” she added. “You can see the plating coming off.”

The other assistant looked over. They exchanged a glance and laughed.

There had to be a mistake. I remembered Dante fastening that necklace around my throat. I remembered what he had whispered afterward.

“Found you.”

Vivienne stood in the doorway. Dante was behind her, flanked by a man whose hand stayed close to his jacket.

The shop fell quiet when the owner recognized him.

He looked at the jewelry spread across the counter.

“Every one of those meant something, Elena. You were really going to sell them?”

“I need the money for—”

“For the baby,” Vivienne finished. “Yes, we know. That’s the explanation for everything now.”

She touched the bag on her shoulder. My bag.

“I switched them before you left. I wanted to show Dante what would happen when the cash stopped.”

I looked at Dante.

“Tell her to return what she took.”

“I knew about the test,” he said. “I didn’t think you’d actually sell them.”

“I brought them here to pay for the appointments.”

Vivienne smiled.

“And the moment you couldn’t get cash from him, every sentimental gift became something to sell.”

Dante’s eyes moved over the counter.

“I chose those for you, Elena. I thought they meant more than this.”

“I remember every one.”

“Then why are they here?”

I had already told him.

Vivienne lifted the pendant at her throat. The real one.

“We had a bet. If you tried to cash them in, I got to keep the originals. At least I appreciate them.”

I could have let her have the diamonds. All of them.

Then I saw the bracelet on her wrist.

A narrow gold chain with a tiny engraved oval. My grandmother’s.

“Give me that.”

Vivienne followed my gaze.

“This?”

“It isn’t his. My grandmother left it to me.”

She unclasped it and let it dangle from one finger.

“What do you have that isn’t his?”

“Dante.” I turned to him. “Tell her.”

He knew. He had watched my mother fasten it around my wrist on our wedding morning.

Vivienne tilted her head.

“Tell you what. Take off everything he paid for, and you can have your precious bracelet back.”

Someone near the window raised a phone.

My face burned. I could hear a woman whispering behind me.

“Enough, Viv,” Dante said. “She can’t take a joke.”

He didn’t tell her to give it back.

I reached for the bracelet. Vivienne jerked her arm away, and I caught her wrist.

“Elena, let go.”

Dante caught my arm and pulled me back. Too hard.

My heel slipped. My hip struck the freestanding glass display, and the cabinet tipped toward me.

He reached for me as it fell.

Glass shattered across the floor. Pain gripped my belly. Something warm ran from my hairline.

Dante dropped beside me.

“Elena. Don’t move.”

He pulled off his jacket and pressed it against the cut on my head. His other hand shook as he took out his phone.

“Send an ambulance. My wife is five months pregnant. She’s bleeding.”

Vivienne touched his shoulder.

“She grabbed me first, Dante. You were trying to—”

“Get out of the way.”

He stayed beside me until the paramedics arrived, then rode with me to the hospital.

At the hospital, they treated me immediately. For now, there was still a heartbeat.

Dante bent over my hand and cried.

“I pulled too hard. I’m sorry. I never meant to hurt you.”

I watched the monitor.

When he tried to kiss my fingers, I moved my hand onto the blanket.

Vivienne came in after the examination.

“The baby still has a heartbeat?” she asked.

Dante nodded without looking away from me.

“Then you can be grateful for that and still address what happened. Elena grabbed me. You intervened. Calling the entire incident your fault won’t help either of you.”

Dante looked at me.

“I’ll pay for the damage. The hospital bill, too. But you need to understand why I stepped in.”

“She was holding my grandmother’s bracelet.”

“And I told her to stop joking. You could have let me handle it.”

The monitor kept beating beside us.

“I want a divorce.”

He went still.

“No.”

“I’ll have a lawyer contact you.”

“Elena, I love you. We’re supposed to be fixing this.”

Vivienne opened her notebook.

“Threatening to end the marriage when she’s asked to acknowledge her part. We discussed this response.”

Dante pulled his chair closer to the bed.

“I’m staying tonight. You can be angry with me. I’m not leaving you here alone.”

He stayed until morning.

Before I was discharged, he collected my medication, settled the hospital bill, and wrote down the time of my next appointment.

After he left, I called Mom, the specialist, and a lawyer.

I asked for separation papers to be prepared and for all communication with Dante to go through the lawyer once I left New York.

After I was discharged, an old coworker found me temporary work updating the guest list for a private club’s charity event. I could do it from home.

The manager agreed to advance part of my pay. I went to the club to collect a laptop and sign the paperwork.

Between the advance, the seven hundred dollars from the canceled flight, and the last of my savings, I had enough for the remaining three thousand dollars.

I paid the specialist and sent the appointment schedule to Mom. She was arranging the care I would need in Portland.

By the time I reached the hospital for another check, my phone would not stop vibrating.

Vivienne had posted a video of me at the club.

Dante bent his head. After a while, he asked, “If she hadn’t come back, would we still—”“You made the decisions.”He flinched.“She could say anything she wanted. You chose to believe her. You chose what to do to me afterward.”“I was trying to make us better.”“I know.”That seemed to hurt him more than if I had called him a liar.“You wanted a perfect marriage. Every time she lowered the score, you punished me until I stopped objecting. Then you called the silence improvement.”His lips trembled.“You can’t give me even one chance to make this right?”“I gave you chances in the kitchen. In your study. In the hospital. On the floor of that shop.”My voice stayed level.“I asked you to call my doctor. You wouldn’t. I asked you to tell the truth about me. You wouldn’t. You don’t get to say I never gave you a chance.”A tear fell onto the table.I waited for him to wipe it away.“The papers, Dante. Please.”He opened the folder beside him.Property records. Account statements. Holdings

The stories spread.“She finds wealthy men whose marriages are in trouble, calls herself a specialist, and tells them everything is their wife’s fault.”“She takes the fees. Then she starts asking for gifts.”“She left London because someone finally checked her credentials.”The comments beneath my post changed just as quickly.“His wife fed him when he had nothing.”“He believed a stranger’s spreadsheet over seven years with her.”“Not a stranger. Apparently that made it worse.”“She helped him build a life, and he punished her for living in it.”Vivienne lost her clients. Complaints became lawsuits. The jewelry she had taken was recovered through the attorneys, including my grandmother’s bracelet.Dante’s respectable businesses suffered too. Partners wanted reassurance. Directors wanted meetings. His men wanted instructions. For weeks, he barely answered them. Then one night, my phone lit up.We need to discuss the divorce. I won’t sign the settlement without seeing you.I had left e

“Get her back?”His voice made Vivienne stop.“You still think I’m going to listen to you?”“I wanted to help. I’ve helped so many couples. Everything I suggested was supposed to make you happier.”He looked at the notebook on the floor.“I thought she was using you,” she continued. “I was wrong. I admit that. But I never meant for the baby to die.”“Did you pay to promote those videos?”She went still.“The boutique. The clip from the club. Did you pay them?”“Dante, please let me explain.”“Did you?”“I thought your marriage was going to be a success story. I wanted people to see that my methods worked.”He took a step closer.“What university?”“What?”“The doctorate. The training you told me about. Where did you get it?”She swallowed.“We’ve known each other since we were children.”“That isn’t an answer.”“I used to bring you breakfast before school. I stood by you when—”“When?” he asked. “When I had no money? When Elena was working until she could barely stand? Where were you t

The comments were moving too fast to read.Vivienne gripped Dante’s sleeve.“Please. Help me clear this up. Tell them the recording is fake. AI can make anything now.”He stared at her.“When we get back, I’ll talk to Elena. I can fix this. Just don’t let these people destroy me.” Her voice broke. “I’m scared.”“You’re scared.”He repeated it quietly. Then he took the phone she was using to stream and threw it into the sea.The broadcast ended. He left her on the beach and went back to the villa. The next attachment was the discharge summary. Then a photograph of the small hospital keepsake box. Inside were the footprints of a son he would never hold.Luca.They had chosen that name together.Dante remembered kneeling on the nursery floor with paint on his cuff. He remembered arguing that the crib should be moved because the morning sun might fall across the baby’s face.He had ordered things from three countries. He had told his men that nobody was to wake Elena, no matter what happen

I took my suitcase and flew to Portland. On the beach, the livestream was still running.“What if your wife’s had enough?” a viewer asked. “What if she actually leaves?”Dante hesitated.Vivienne didn’t.“She won’t. She’s writing a public apology as we speak. Check back this week.”She smiled into the lens.“Using a pregnancy to manipulate someone is unacceptable. She needs to own that.”A comment flashed past.“His wife just posted. You need to read it.”Vivienne looked pleased.“Told you.”Dante reached for his own phone. For an instant, his shoulders loosened. Then the comments multiplied.“It’s not an apology.”“There’s a hospital report. They lost the baby.”“He pushed his pregnant wife. Watch the full clip she linked.”“Seven years together. She worked three jobs for him.”The color drained from his face.“No,” Vivienne said softly, moving out of the camera’s view. “This is another escalation. Don’t fall for it.”He opened the message I had sent him.The first thing he saw was th

It cut straight to the shattered display.“This woman tried to sell us counterfeit designer goods. When her husband confronted her, she wrecked a five-thousand-dollar cabinet.
