Chapter 1

"Have you figured out what you are going to tell the family?"

Logan Harwick’s voice message arrived right after.

"Do not pick a fight with your dad and stepmom over this. They are worried about Bria. You have always been the responsible one. Just do this for me and take one for the team."

He did not ask if I felt upset. He did not ask if I felt willing.

He informed me. My future had been signed away to make up for Bria Linden’s failure, and no one had checked with me first.

I stared at the screen, and my mind drifted back to the day they sorted us into classes in freshman year.

Logan had searched the entire building to find me. He leaned against the classroom doorway with a grin.

"Audrey, I got the school to put me in your class. If anyone gives you trouble, they will have to go through me first."

When we picked our course tracks sophomore year, he had a perfect score in physics, yet he followed me into bio‑chem instead.

He had said, "I promised you we would go to Edgemont together. Wherever you are, that is where I will be. That is our deal."

He used that same tone now to tell me that for Bria’s sake, my place at Edgemont could wait another year.

Every one of those promises had carried an expiration date, and the clock had run out the day Bria entered the picture.

I switched back to the state education board’s website.

A red warning box flashed across the screen. "Final confirmation is irreversible. Are you sure you want to submit?"

The cursor hovered over the confirm button. I clicked it.

The system returned a green banner. "Application locked successfully."

I took a screenshot, saved it, and logged out.

My phone lit up again. This time it came from the class group chat.

Someone had screenshotted Bria’s social media post and shared it in the group.

"Logan, you are really not going to Edgemont? You are the top scorer in the state, man."

"Repeating senior year for Bria. That is real devotion."

"Wait, what about Audrey? She is going to Edgemont alone?"

The chat went quiet for a few seconds.

Logan’s profile picture appeared.

"She has not been doing well lately. Do not ask about it. Test anxiety hit her hard and she did not perform. She is going to repeat the year with us."

He lied without hesitation, as if he were doing me a favor.

The others joined in immediately.

"I always said there was no way she stayed that consistent on her practice tests. Guess she cracked under the pressure."

"Honestly, that works out. The three of you repeat together and sweep the top three spots next year."

I watched the messages scroll past, and I felt calm.

Logan assumed that all he needed to do was say the word and I would take the fall for Bria, play the girl who choked on test day so no one would look closely at what had really happened.

He had not waited to get our story straight. He had written my failure into the record in front of everyone.

I did not respond. I screen‑recorded the entire conversation and saved it.

My phone buzzed. It was a call from the city admissions office.

"Is this Audrey Linden? Our system shows your application has been locked. Given your exceptionally high score, we are making a routine confirmation call."

"I submitted it myself."

My voice stayed steady.

"All right. Please keep your confirmation code safe. Best of luck with everything."

After I hung up, I logged back into the portal and linked the two‑step verification to my personal phone number and email.

As soon as I finished, Dad called.

"Audrey, did you finish your application?"

"It is done."

"Come home for dinner tonight. Logan is here too. We should all sit down and talk."

"Talk about what?"

I asked, although I already knew.

"About your sister." He sighed.

"Bria has been in rough shape the last few days. You are the older one. Try to be understanding."

"Fine. I will be right there."

He always acted like family meant all of us equally, yet the scale had never tipped in my direction.

I pushed the front door open. The living room felt eerily quiet.

No food sat on the dining table. Instead, a thick stack of documents rested in the center.

Dad sat at the head of the table. My stepmother, Lorelai Callahan, sat beside him, dabbing at her eyes.

Bria leaned against Logan, her eyes red and swollen.

Logan looked at me. His expression carried a silent warning. It felt like he was saying, "Do not make a scene. Just go along with it."

Dad slid the documents toward me.

It was an enrollment contract for a repeat‑year program. A pen with the cap already removed sat beside it.

Last on the recording was the enrollment director, his voice bright with excitement. "A 1560 scorer tagging along as a study partner and the top scorer in the state repeating senior year. Once those two headlines drop, we will not even need to print brochures next year!"When the audio ended, the silence in the room was absolute. The color drained from Logan’s face. He shot to his feet and stared at me in disbelief.Bria fell apart completely. She turned and fixed her eyes on Logan. "You recorded it. You have been playing me this whole time?"Logan opened his mouth. "I was afraid you would actually jump that day, so I recorded everything to cover myself.""So you were never trying to protect anyone."I looked at him, my gaze empty."You were only ever protecting yourself."The truth was out.The grand devotion, the crippling depression. None of it had been real. It was a scheme stitched together from greed and vanity, and nothing more. The investigation’s findings came down s

I ignored the edited recording Logan sent me and started investigating the background noise in the clip instead.Faintly audible beneath the voices was the chime of a cuckoo clock marking the hour. That style of old‑fashioned clock existed in only one place I knew. Logan’s family study. The implication was immediate. The people in that room that night had not been limited to Bria and Logan. His parents had been there too.I asked Mr. Tierney to help me track down the boy who had been live‑streaming in the admissions office lobby. At first the boy refused to admit anything. He held out until Gary showed him a draft of the lawsuit, and then he crumbled."I was not trying to go after you. The enrollment director from the repeat‑year school paid us to do it!"He handed over every private message and payment receipt from his account. The messages from the enrollment director were damning."Frame Audrey Linden as cold and selfish. A joint review panel between the school and the Edgemont University admissions office assembled quickly.Because the allegations involved serious misconduct, I was instructed to suspend all public statements and remain in the dormitory while the investigation was underway.Logan finally panicked. He ran to the school gate to intercept me but was stopped by security outside the fence. All he could do was shout through the iron bars."Audrey, believe me, I had no idea Bria was going to post those screenshots!"I will talk to her right now and get her to take back the accusations. Do not be scared."I stood by the flower bed and watched him put on his show.He believed this was enough. He would show up, yell a few things through a gate, and that would count as being on my side.He went back to Bria.Mr. Tierney told me that Logan confronted Bria in her hospital room and demanded to know why she faked the screenshots.Bria only cried and asked him, "Did you not say that no matter

After leaving the police station, Logan started calling me nonstop.I blocked his number without a second thought and asked Mr. Tierney to recommend a reliable lawyer."Ms. Linden, the evidence you provided is more than enough to prove that your legal rights were violated."The lawyer, Gary Desmond, reviewed the materials. His tone sounded confident."However, if you want to pursue criminal charges for what Bria did on the rooftop, you will need more direct evidence of intent."I nodded. "For now, could you start by drafting a formal cease‑and‑desist letter?"I assumed things would quiet down for a while, yet Bria clearly had no intention of letting it go.That evening, a long post titled "How My Cold‑Blooded High‑Scoring Sister Drove Me to the Edge" went viral across local forums and social media. In it, Bria cast herself as the pitiful younger sister, crushed under her older sibling’s shadow for years, spiraling into severe depression after failing her exams. She accused me

Early the next morning, the police called in everyone who had been present.Faced with the access logs, Bria cried as though her heart were breaking."I just thought the room felt stuffy. I wanted some fresh air on the roof. I really was not planning anything."She clung to the hem of Logan’s shirt. He stepped forward without hesitation to vouch for her."Officer, she was already in the middle of a breakdown. She could barely stand on her own. There is no way she could have planned something like that."It was just an accident."The officer looked at me and waited for my response.I did not argue. I took a USB drive in my uninjured left hand and held it out."This contains the audio I recorded at the dinner table last night, photos of the enrollment contract, and the text I received about the unauthorized review of my application."They did not just try to force me to give up my spot. They also used my personal documents without my consent."When the recording played, Logan’s

In the split second of weightlessness, I felt certain I was going to die.A rough, strong hand clamped down on my wrist, and a searing pain ripped through my arm."Hold on!"It was the school security guard and our homeroom teacher, Hans Tierney, who arrived just in time.Together, they hauled me back over the edge of the rooftop by sheer force.I hit the ground hard, and the pain in my right arm felt sharp enough to drill through bone. Cold sweat soaked through the back of my shirt in an instant.Everything around me fell into chaos.Meanwhile, Bria curled up in Logan’s arms, trembling and sobbing."I did not mean to. It was her. She lost control and tried to drag me down with her."She had always held a talent for flipping the blame.Dad rushed over. He did not spare me a single glance. He crouched beside Bria and checked her anxiously for injuries.Logan steadied Bria first, then finally turned to look at me.He did not ask if I felt pain. He did not ask how close I had
