Interview

I woke up frowning as my phone rang across the room. Part of me wanted to ignore it, if it was important they would leave a message. Right? Groaning I got up only to stump my toe as soon as my feet hit the ground.

“Shit, hello?” I said as I did a tiny hop praying that it was only my mother on the other end.

No such luck. I could feel my face turn red as Lucas started talking, “Is that how you always answer your phone?”

Sighing I sat on my bed looking at my injured toe, “no, I hit my toe and it hurts.”

Lucas laughed, “oh yeah you need me to come kiss it?”

My mouth dropped open but no words escaped. At my silence, Lucas continued speaking, “get up and get dressed. You need to be at the address I’m about to text you at 1. Don’t be late.”

He gave me no time to question him before he hung up. I pulled my phone down from my ear looking at it jumping a little as a text came through. Opening it I saw he had sent me an address and told me to dress nicely. It had been almost two weeks since I had last seen him, could this possibly be the interview he promised to set up for me? And why the hell was he just now calling to tell me about it.

Having no clue exactly what I was about to walk into I made sure to look my best. My hair which had been in a bun for a good two days was straightened and I took the time to do my makeup properly. I dressed in a black skirt paired with a ruffled red top and a black jacket. I felt stupid, what if I was walking in some grungy bar or something. Sliding into my black wedges I prayed that Lucas wasn’t sending me on some wild goose chase.

I parked at the address 20 minutes till 1 and was glad I had left early. The building was huge and the parking garage was a nightmare, it was hard as fuck to find a place to park. I was super nervous that I would get lost in the building itself, hopefully Lucas had given me enough information. Walking in I took the elevator up to the 7th floor trying to remain calm and not look as lost as I felt.

Stepping out I looked around feeling nervous. There was a lady standing behind a desk directly in front of the elevators. She looked up giving me a serious expression. “Ms. Andrews?”

I nodded walking forward, “yes, I’m a little early.”

The lady looked at me not smiling, “you're either on time or late, never early.” I frowned at her watching as she hit a button and said something quickly in the phone. “You can go in, first door on the left.”

I walked in the direction she pointed wondering what lay behind the closed doors. Pushing open the doors I was glad to see there was an empty desk sitting by a window. An older man entered the room from the only other door in the room. “Ms. Andrews, a pleasure to meet you. I’m sure you’ve guessed by now I’m Jack.”

He extended his hand and I accepted, “yes sir, thank you for making time to see me.”

As I followed him into his office he laughed. “A friend of Mr. Blake’s is a friend of mine.” I looked down feeling my face blush at the mere mention of Lucas.

I sat down in front of his desk watching him as he sat down. Sitting back in his chair he looked over at me “Now the job isn’t too hard, take my calls, take notes. You will help me schedule my meetings. Everything that happens behind these doors stays behind these doors do you understand?”

I nodded looking up at Jack, “yes sir.” I had gathered by the front desk that this was a law firm. Jack didn’t strike me as a lawyer, he might have been in his late forties but he was still attractive. “That won’t be a problem.”

He leaned back in his chair, “I don’t think it will be either.” He slid a paper forward, “I really don’t care about your experience, I just care if I can trust you to keep my affairs private. If you think you can that’s how much I will pay you weekly.”

Looking down I about fell out of my chair, $2500 a week. I looked up seeing Jack watch me. I put my hand to my chest, “I hadn’t expected this.”

Jack shrugged, “your secrecy will be paid for. Besides, I owe Lucas a favor and I’m sure he can handle you.”

I frowned at his words. I knew I should question him further but I wasn’t about to turn the job down. “Thank you for this opportunity, sir.”

He nodded, “no problem, Taylor. I expect you here at 9 am Monday through Friday. You will get off around 5 but most days I will probably let you leave early. I don’t care what you wear as long as you don’t come in here in shorts and flip flops. Blue jeans are fine, if you need to take off call the number on the paper I gave you.”

I thanked him again shaking his hand before I stepped out of his office a little overwhelmed. Walking through the door and to the lobby, I saw the no nonsense receptionist was now focused on a guy in a black suit. Ignoring her and whoever she was entertaining I headed to the elevator.

“I take it things went well?” I turned at Lucas’s voice. My mouth opened as I saw it was him dressed in black slacks, a white shirt with a black tie, and a black jacket.

“Lucas,” I said shocked.

He turned around to the receptionist, “good to see you again Sarah.” She glared daggers at me as Lucas walked up beside me and hit the button to the elevator.

I looked over at him, “what...what are you doing here?”

He put his hand on my back and gently pushed against me as the door opened. I stepped in looking up at him awaiting an answer. There was something wrong with this whole picture. He hit the button to the garage shrugging, “I had a meeting in the building and decided to check on you.”

I nodded looking up at him, “well I got the job so you better get to looking for me a place.”

Lucas smiled down at me, “I already have you a place.”

I frowned I had made the comment as a joke, “what? No, not yet I can’t afford to move right now and I need furniture, and....”

Lucas put a finger to my lips, “I took care of it.”

The elevator opened and I walked out behind him lost. I couldn’t accept all he was doing. I had a feeling that something was going on but I had no clue as to what.

“What do you mean you took care of it?” I asked. Lucas ignored me as he led the way to my car.
