Kiara was all smiles, surrounded by her friends as she looked into the mirror. It was her 19th birthday and the hall downstairs has been decorated in a birthday theme fitting for the daughter of an Alpha, but that was not the only reason she was so excited.

“Are you ready to finally find your mate?”

“How excited are you?!" Two of her friends, Tanya and Chloe asked, and she blushed.

Werewolves found their mates when they both turned 19, which is why dating is strictly forbidden in the community and it made everyone overly excited to finally find their mates, and Kiara was not immune to all that. She had been looking forward to finding her mate for as long as she can remember and today was finally the day. She tried to keep from guessing who it was, but she has been playing guessing games in her mind all day.

“Alright, time to make our bets before she goes down to the hall.” Chloe started and brought out the 50-dollar bill in her bag, “my shot is on Alex, he has been making eyes at her since his 19th birthday.”

“My bet is on Christian; they’ve been friends for a very long time. I’m sure the moon goddess would make them a match.”

Kiara rolled her eyes and stood up, showing her red gorgeous ball gown. She took in her face coated in delicate makeup and smiled. “If you guys are done betting on my future, can we go down now and find out who it is?”

“Yes!” they both chimed at once and opened the door for her to lead the way, and Kiara walked away with the both of them trailing behind her.

She expected to be hit with the scent of her mate and be overpowered by an urge to go meet him like she read about, but there was absolutely nothing like that. She didn’t feel anything different, she felt oddly normal and it sent certain signals up her brain; what if she ends up like the werewolves who never found their mates?

Before she could give in to the thought, her parents appeared before her and pressed kisses against her cheeks. “Happy birthday, Princess, you look absolutely gorgeous and breathtaking.” They chorused even though they already wished her at 12 AM, and a bright grin covered her face.

“Thank you, mummy. Thank you, daddy.”

“I hope you will enjoy your party and at the end of the day, we hope to see you latched onto someone’s arm,” her mum, Luna Camilia said, and her dad interjected almost immediately.

“And if you are not latched to someone’s arm at the end of the night, that is absolutely fine as well sweetheart.”

She rolled her eyes jokingly at her dad. She knew he meant well and was just being over protective, but the mere thought of not finding her mate by the end of the night absolutely terrified her.

She knew some people like Jane, who didn’t find her mate at nineteen, and she had witnessed the life get drained out of her and she does not want to be one of those people. Absolutely not. She has to lead her pack, and she must have her Alpha Consort for everything to be perfect.

“Go and have fun, sweetie. Your friends are all waiting for you.” Kiara snapped out of her thoughts to meet her mum’s smile and bobbed her head swiftly.

The scary thoughts cast birthday blues on her, so she dragged her feet away from them into the crowd that was filled with her friends, acquaintances, schoolmates, and random pack members, who didn’t fail to wish her a happy birthday whenever she waltzed past them, and slowly the the birthday excitement creeped back up.

Every thought of a mate rolled to the back of her mind and she enjoyed every bit of her party. From dancing, to having a few drinks, playing games, singing karaoke horribly, every bit of the activity that went on filled her with joy, but that came to an end when the hall started emptying out and Chloe and Tanya ran up to her, wiggling their brows as they smiled mischievously.

“Soo…” Chloe dragged out

“Found him yet?” Tanya completed, and Kiara’s smile faltered, instantly Chloe and Tanya’s smile vanished. “Are you okay?”

“I haven’t found him,” she tried to keep a brave front and a smile on her face, but the tears pooling in her eyes gave away the pain she was feeling, “I am so scared that I will not find him, I don’t know if….” The rest of her words were drowned out by a strong smell and her eyes widened.

“Oh my god,” she breathed out and before she could fully process it, her legs started moving on its own accord, and her worried friends followed closely behind to make sure she was not about to do something silly.

The closer Kiara got to the backdoor, the stronger the scent got, and she found herself holding onto her gown as she started running. The moment she made it out of the door, the pack’s Gamma’s only son, and one of the most handsome men of the pack, Kristen, stood there with a knowing smile on his face, while Kiara panted as she tried to catch her breath.

“Hello mate,” he whispered, and released his hands that had been tucked behind his back all these whiles to reveal the bouquet of flowers he got for her and a smile so huge it felt like her cheeks were about to burst open.

“You knew,” she breathed out and took calculated short steps towards him, “why did you come so late then?”

“I wanted you to enjoy your day properly,”

Her cheeks turned a light shade of pink and she took the bouquet from him. “Thank you, Kristen.”

“Usually, when mates meet each other there is a long moment of embrace, why have…” Kiara didn’t let him finish his sentence and dramatically flung herself in his arms.

Chloe who had watched everything was grinning from ear to ear, but Tanya looked pale as a ghost, her eyes firmly pressed on Kristen who carefully avoided her gaze.

After locking her door, Kiara shut her drapes, then laid down comfortably in her now dark room. Her fingers found the locket on her neck and she fiddled with it. For the first time in weeks, she pried it open and tears filled her eyes.Somewhere along the line, somewhere in between getting revenge, she had forgotten why she even started. She allowed the tears that had formed in her eyes to roll down her cheeks, while her thumb caressed the picture on the locket softly. Her teary eyes roamed over the picture, and she forced herself to engrave every bit of it in her mind.“I’m sorry…” she choked out despite the lump that formed in her throat. Her thumb caressed the picture again then she snapped it shut. Placing her hands over her eyes, she allowed herself to weep and mourn. On that day, she had promised her parents that the next thing she’d do was get them the justice they deserve, but fate has played a very nasty trick on her. She has been burdened with a responsibility that she canno

Kiara’s widened eyes darted over the people, who were now on their knees, then it fell back to the woman, who knelt directly in front of her, holding a child.“You don’t have to kneel, I…”“Whatever it takes to beg you,” the woman cut her off, tears brimming in her eyes while her bottom lip quivered uncontrollably. “Whatever it takes to get you to please consider us, even if it means kneeling for the rest of our lives, we would do it.”A shaky breath passed through Kiara’s lips, and she looked to Devon for help. He squeezed her hand and slightly nodded his head, but that was not comforting enough for her. She wanted to tell him that she wanted more, but her tongue seemed too heavy, so she forced a smile and turned towards the people. All her years of training to be Luna came rushing back to her at that moment. Taking a deep breath, she pushed her lips into a big smile. “I want to help you all -” she said, and she instantly noticed how most if not everyone there immediately seemed to

Kiara woke up with a big headache and annoyance bubbling in the pit of her stomach. The sexual frustration, and anger she felt towards Kali didn't pass away with the night, it followed her into the morning and it weighed heavy on her chest. She carried out her morning routine begrudgingly, and to make matters worse, Kali was yet to say a word to her and despite her annoyance, a part of her was worried that she had disappeared yet again. So despite her resolve to not speak to her, she called out Kali’s name, her voice thick and heavy with fear.“I am here,” Kali said, and Kiara exhaled through her mouth, loudly. The both of them didn't say a single word to each other afterwards, despite their longing to. Kali wanted so badly to say screw it and tell Kiara all she wanted to know, but fear kept the words lodged in her throat.“Do you want to go for a run later? It's been long you shifed.” Kali suggested, hoping to break the ice between them but all she got as a response was a shrug, and

“I am going to get us home as quick as I can, and I know it is not within your power, but try to hold off as much as you can till we get home, okay?” Kiara nodded, too tongue-tied to speak. The night has progressively taken unexpected turns and she was scared about what will happen next.Devon drove as fast as he could, he almost crashed into cars given how reckless he was being, but he was too far in his head to care. He knew how important it was to Kiara that she gets to decide when they mate, and he was not going to let circumstances bend her to its will no matter what it’ll take.“We’ll get home soon enough.” It was an hour ride, and he knew he couldn't slash the journey by half no matter how fast it drives, and an hour was more than enough time to send her into a full blown heat, but he was still going to try.Kiara focused on taking deep breaths throughout the ride, and trying her best to keep her body temperature low, but it seemed the more she tried, the quicker the hotness t

The sound of Devon’s hand slamming hard on the table, and the sound of it splitting and crashing to the floor instantly followed.“Leonidas,” he called out, his voice dangerously low and calm, “what is he doing here? He is neither part of the Council, nor is he needed for the query.”“He is needed for the query, he was a witness.”“Witness to a crime that never happened.Kiara gripped the edge of the table, and forced herself to remember how to breathe. Kristen, who was standing by the door a moment ago had somehow made his way beside her, and Devon, who was meant to keep her in the present was too busy losing his shit.“You neither head nor own the Council, Devon,” a new voice said, his face masked in visible annoyance. “You cannot go about making demands like we work for you.”Devon breathed out a laugh and straightened his spine, “very well then, I will make threats. If that lying piece of shit isn't sent out of here this very minute, not only will I walk out of here with my mate…”

“Are you ready?” Devon asked Kiara as they pulled up to the door, and he watched with narrowed eyes as she inhaled sharply and exhaled softly. Then she looked up at him and smiled.“I’m ready.” Devon watched her quietly for a moment longer, and once he was satisfied, he pulled her closer to himself and squeezed her waist before he held the door knob and twisted.Kiara’s brows shot up in pleasant surprise, and her eyes wandered round the room they had walked into; it was the exact opposite of what she expected the council room to look like. She expected to walk into a dark eerie room, lit up by candles only, and so silent you can hear the blood running in your veins. But she walked into something completely different. The room was brightly lit, the table stretched across the room, and on top of it were loads of different dishes and drinks. The men she expected to be big, pot-bellied and broody, weren’t. They all looked so fit, that the only giveaway that they were old men was the grey

A disapproving look registered on Devon’s face when Kiara walked out of the cell room drenched in a pool of her own sweat and smelling nothing like his mate.Kaiser went feral at the lack of her scent despite looking at her, and Devon had to do everything within his powers to hold him down. “The look in your eyes tells me she did a very good job,” Kiara whispered, whilst rubbing her left arm. She suddenly felt self-conscious and wanted to shy away.“Can I go now?” Devon pried his eyes away from Kiara to her, then shook his head.“You will be taken to Marcos’ pack after I have confirmed that you did a good job,” turning to Kiara, “let’s go.”Awkwardness and heaviness settled on Kiara’s chest as they made their way over to the car. Devon was acting different, she could feel it and it made her want to March back and ask Ketura to undo everything she did.“I’m sorry,” Devon whispered after he pulled open her door, “Kasier had a hard time adjusting to seeing your face and not smelling you

“Is there anything else she said you should do?” Devon asked as they pulled up to the jail house.Kiara thought for a while, then nodded. “She said I should make sure I don’t shift that day no matter what.”Devon's brows furrowed and he thought about that for a while, then pushed his door open and stepped out. He knew that all this has a bigger picture to it, but he couldn't quite place a finger on it yet.Pulling open her door, he helped her down. “Ketura is not a good woman, she is not even nice, and she will say and do anything to protect herself, so whatever she says to you, take it with a grain of salt.”“Why not just discard it?”“She has a twisted way of lacing the truth with lies.”Kiara's eyes narrowed and she let the words replay over and over again in her head. She only snapped out of her head when they stopped at the cell holding Ketura, and she was already standing by the door as if she was waiting for them.“I knew you’d come.”Kiara and Devon exchanged glances, then res

“You still haven't told him,” Kali reminded Kiara as soon as they dropped off at the training ground, and Kiara let her lips slowly part, allowing a gush of air to pass through. The truth is that she did try to tell him, but she had no idea how to explain to him because Kali refused to explain anything to her.“It's been two days, Kiara. The meeting is in a day, you have to tell him.”“But you haven't told me why I need to get my scent masked.”“It is to protect you, your scent is all part of the reason they requested an audience with you.”Devon, who was already marching inside, paused and frowned when he noticed he was walking alone. His eyes darted around for Kiara, and his frown deepened when he noticed her just standing and staring. He could tell she was conversing with her wolf, and he couldn't help but notice how frequent her conversations with her wolf had gotten, but most importantly, how unaware and off-guard she seemed to be whenever she was conversing with her. That was a
