THE VOTE

XENIA’S POV

The council chamber was colder than usual.

Someone had left one of the windows cracked, and no one bothered to close it. The breeze moved through the room in slow, steady drafts. Not enough to be distracting. Just enough to notice.

They were all already seated when I arrived. No one looked surprised to see me.

Cerra gave me a small nod.

“Luna.”

I returned it, just as quiet. “Elder.”

I took my seat. Didn’t ask what the meeting was about. They didn’t offer.

The minutes passed slowly.

Mostly updates I wasn’t needed for — territory shifts, trade volume changes, a new transport line to the river markets.

Then Graythorne cleared his throat and said, “There’s one final matter.”

And no one met my eyes.

RICO’S POV

She told me not to come.

Said she didn’t want anyone standing behind her, like she needed reinforcement.

“If I can’t sit in that room and hold the line alone,” she said, “I have no business sitting there at all.”

I didn’t agree. But I understood.

So I waited outs

ECHOES IN THE HALLXENIA’S POVPeople started looking me in the eye again. That was the first change I noticed. Not just nods in passing. Not the careful glances I’d grown used to.Real eye contact. Held just a second longer than necessary. It said more than words. Not allegiance. Not pity.Just… awareness. The kind that says, I read what you wrote. I remember who you are. They didn’t need to say anything out loud. They were saying it already, in the way they stood still when I walked past instead of stepping aside like I was in the way.And for the first time in weeks, the silence wasn’t heavy. It was respectful.CATTY’S POVShe never brought it up.The letter, I mean. Not once.Didn’t ask who had seen it. Didn’t ask what anyone said. But I could tell she felt it — the weight of it moving quietly behind the walls. How people’s footsteps slowed when they passed her study. How voices dropped when she entered a room. The halls hadn’t gone silent. They’d gone thoughtful. That’s something

THE LETTER LANDSREYNA’S POVI didn’t take it to the council.I didn’t have to.I took it to the courtyard first — where the healers met after dusk.I didn’t read it aloud.Just handed it to Mira, the oldest among them, and said, “She wanted this seen.”Mira read it slowly. Then folded it once, pressed it to her chest, and nodded. That’s how it started. Not with a declaration. But with a handoff.⸻XENIA’S POVI didn’t ask where the letter went.Didn’t follow its path.I just let it go.There was something freeing in that. For the first time, I didn’t worry about how they’d twist my words.I’d written them for the ones who already knew me.And for the ones who only knew the version the council painted — quiet, passive, discarded. They deserved the truth.⸻CATTY’S POVBy noon, I saw the same ribbon — that soft green one — tied around a door handle in the northern wing.By evening, it was around three more.No ceremony. No explanation.Just a symbol.Recognition passed in silence. One

THE QUIET BEFOREXENIA’S POVThere was a strange calm in the air that week. Not peace.Something else. The way wind stills just before a storm rolls in.The hallways felt longer. People spoke in lowered tones. Even the guards looked over their shoulders more than usual.Everyone could feel it.Something was coming. But no one said what.⸻CATTY’S POVIt wasn’t just nerves. It was recognition.People had started asking questions again — but this time, they weren’t about the council or titles. They were about her. What she was building. Who she was meeting. Why the stable boys started calling the study “the quiet wing,” and why even the midwives had started holding their meetings in the garden just outside it.She wasn’t planning anything dramatic. She didn’t have to.People were shifting around her.⸻REYNA’S POVThere were two types of fear in the palace now.One belonged to the council — fear that they were losing control. The other belonged to the rest of us — fear that she might no

LINES IN THE DUSTXENIA’S POVThey didn’t respond to the name. Not out loud. But something changed. The next morning, the council closed two of the eastern courtyards “for maintenance.” No reason given. No timeline offered. One of those courtyards led to the old temple wing. The other led to my study. They never said I couldn’t use it. They just made it harder.A message without words.A line drawn in dust — easy to deny, easy to erase, but still there.CATTY’S POV“They’re testing her patience,” I said to Reyna. She didn’t look up from her list.“No,” she said. “They’re testing their reach.”I frowned. “What do you mean?”Reyna looked at me then, steady.“They want to know if she’ll step around the line… or step over it.”XENIA’S POVI didn’t change my route.I just walked a little further.Down a back corridor. Through an unused servants’ passage. Out into the gardens and back in through the long gallery.I didn’t need to fight them on the closure.I just needed to show that I was s

THE NAMINGXENIA’S POVI didn’t plan a response. No speech. No formal audience.I just kept doing what I’d been doing.Walking the halls. Showing up to the morning briefings. Sitting with Brin when the village midwives came to visit. But this time, I didn’t cover my stomach. No loose shawl. No careful draping of my cloak.I let the shape of my body speak first.Let them see what they’d been whispering about. Not rumor. Not theory.Just truth, wrapped in skin and silence.CATTY’S POVIt was subtle. But people noticed. The way the council aides glanced sideways when she walked by.How the guard at the east wing pressed a hand to his chest — not out of fear, but respect. No one said anything outright. But the whispers changed.Softened.You can’t call something shameful when it won’t hide.RICO’S POVI didn’t ask her what she was doing.Didn’t ask if it hurt. But when she stepped out of her room in that simple navy dress — the one she hadn’t worn since before the vote — and walked throug

QUIET TEETHXENIA’S POVI first noticed it in the way people paused when I entered a room. Not everyone. Just a few.A scribe who stopped mid-sentence. A steward who suddenly remembered something urgent. A kitchen boy who went quiet as I passed. It wasn’t fear.It was uncertainty.Someone had been speaking — not loudly, but often enough. Long enough. That’s how erosion works. You don’t always hear it happening. You just wake up one day and realize the ground’s gone soft beneath your feet.CATTY’S POVShe didn’t ask right away.Just paid more attention.Watched where the silences were.Who avoided her eyes.Who suddenly “had to go.”And when she finally turned to me and asked, “Have you heard anything?” — I told her the truth.“Not directly. But something’s moving.”She nodded. She didn’t ask for names.I think that worried me more.RICO’S POVThere was a rumor circulating. Not about her — not at first.About the child.Someone started asking questions:Why hasn’t the Luna’s pregnancy
