Chapter: Chapter One Hundred REYNA'S POVFear and smoke filled the council chamber. The smell of fire stuck to the stones no matter how hard the guards scrubbed. Like rats, whispers ran: The queen has escaped. She's been taken by the shard. Once more, the architect walks. With my hand on my sword's hilt, I stood silently among them. As evidence that steel was still in charge here, not as an ally or an adversary. At the head of the table, Rico was a storm. His eyes were burning green as though he had contracted the disease from the fire in Xenia, and his claws had made lines in the wood. "We hold," he snarled. “We control this kingdom whether she is present or not. No banner falls, no ally turns. Not while I'm breathing.”However, I noticed the uncertainty ripple through the chamber. The lords of Orion were vultures, waiting for weakness, and now the weakness was clear.ELRIC'S POV I watched from the corner as they verbally tore at each other. Like thin ice, loyalty broke. And I heard it in the quiet between

Chapter: Chapter Ninety nineXENIA'S POV The night broke apart. Unrestrained, flame ripped through stone and dirt as it screamed out of me. With flashing blades and blazing green eyes, dozens of the shadows rushed from the treeline in response. Catty was on the move already. Her curses were drowned under the roar of fire as her blade sang, slicing down the first that came our way. However, the survivor remained motionless. All he did was observe. My flames bent toward him, not burning him. As if my fire were iron and his body were lodestone, he pulled. Over the commotion, he yelled, "Stop fighting me." "You'll just burn yourself!" I growled, "I'd rather burn everything than belong to you."CATTY'S POVShe was too intelligent, for crying out loud. Too powerful. Even the stars appeared dim as the fire raged out of her like a storm, consuming the night. And he walked right through it, damn him. My heart thumped. His skin didn't burn, but his cloak did. Around him, the flames danced like devoted dogs. "Xenia

Chapter: Chapter Ninety-eightXENIA'S POVI ought to have disregarded it. The voice that slithered through the quiet. Like a compass needle turning toward its twin, the pull beneath my skin felt like a shard inside of me. However, the forest was no longer motionless when I opened my eyes. The shadows shifted. Not one. Not two. dozens. Cloaked in darkness and with eyes that gleam green like shattered glass, figures glided between the trees. The shard screamed in my veins. I hissed and shook her awake, saying, "Catty." "We're not by ourselves." With a gasp, she stood up, blade out. But when she saw them, her face went pale—shapes encroaching, their footsteps quiet, their hunger anything but.And at their center stood him.The survivor. The shadow-man. The one who had shown me a shard and smiled like he’d already won.CATTY'S POVMy blade trembled. Out of anger, not fear. Because I was familiar with his posture, his smirk, and the scar across his chest that appeared to be the result of fire trying to sever him

Chapter: Chapter Ninety seven CATTY'S POVI was thrown back by the explosion. I slammed against the ground, my arms bitten by dust and stone. A high, piercing note rang in my ears, drowning out all other sounds. My lungs were scratched by smoke. I looked for her in the fog. "Xenia!" I screamed her name, my throat burning. The green glow had vanished. It was as if someone had extinguished the light from the shard. However, the man remained. In the smoke, a silhouette. standing. I'm still watching. And Xenia was on her knees, thank God. No longer bright enough to light the road, the fire sputtered feebly from her hands. I coughed up blood as I stumbled forward, dragging myself across broken ground. "Get away from her!"The figure tilted his head. Slowly. Calmly. As though the blast had been nothing but a gust of wind. Then he spoke again, low and certain. “You cannot kill what was built into her bones.”XENIA'S POVI was immobile. Something felt wrong about the fire inside of me. Broken. I had some of it, but

Chapter: Chapter Ninety sixXENIA'S POV Thick as smoke, the night closed in. The other rhythm—that gentle, purposeful tread behind us—never wavered, even though Catty's steady steps matched mine. With fire blossoming in my palm, I spun around. The road had a ragged gold glow. The figure remained motionless. They stood at the edge of the glow, hooded and cloaked, as though the light leaned away from them. I yelled, "Enough hiding." My voice broke the silence. "Come forward or I'll burn you to the ground." Silence for a heartbeat. A low laugh then crept under the hood. chilly. In a way I couldn't identify, familiar. The stranger remarked, "You carry it well." "The fire." Compared to the others, the shard sings louder in you.” My skin crawled under the words. In response to him, my fire hissed hotter. Blade gleaming, Catty edged in front of me. "Who are you?" The hood moved, revealing a pair of eyes like broken green glass in the torchlight. My chest was squeezed so painfully close, but it wasn't Ric

Chapter: Chapter Ninety fiveXENIA'S POVAfter the fire, the palace seemed smaller. Once-unshakable stone walls now pressed in like a tomb around me. The murmurs followed me everywhere, reverberating even when I was by myself, curling through hallways, and sliding beneath doors. "The chamber was burned by her." "Xenia is no longer here." "The heir of the architect...Until I was barely able to breathe, every word stuck to my skin. Rico put a steady, warm hand on my shoulder, but it wasn't enough. Not against the weight of my inner burden. Inside my veins, the shard had reincarnated rather than died. With each heartbeat, its fire murmured in my blood.I would shatter them if I remained here. Burn them. Verify the accuracy of every muttered fear. So I decided. I said in a raw voice, "I can't stay." It will be worse if I do. For everyone.”Green fire raged in Rico's eyes as it battled the darkness below. His jaw tightened like a rock under stress. "Stop saying that. Don't you dare— "”I'm not inquiring." My t
