CHAPTER 9: THE RETURN

SERA'S POV

A knock on my door made me freeze.

It was nearly one in the morning. I wasn't expecting anyone. Security in this building was supposed to be ironclad.

Kaelen had guaranteed that the security here was excellent.

My heart hammered as I approached the door. Peered through the peephole.

A woman stood there.

She looked older. Gray streaking her dark hair, my dark hair, the same shade I saw in the mirror every morning. The hair was matted, dirty, hanging in greasy str

CHAPTER 12Sera’s POV“Ms.Vance, Mr. Thorn wants you in his office. Now.” Alfred spoke, his voice low and with a slow rhythm to it, as he let out a tiny crack of a smile, gesturing his hand, pointing to Kaelen’s office. This morning, I thought today was meant to be a very peaceful day, and actually imagined knocking off work dancing in the rain while on a walk home.I guess not. Instead, Alfred was staring right back at me while his height almost hit the ceiling hovering above me.What. Kaelen wants me in his office. A knot tightened in my stomach. Did he want me to do some work, extra work maybe, or was it about Patricia. Just the view of it sent chills down my spine.I sat frozen on the cold leather armchair, not knowing how to respond. And then I nodded. He did a little head bow and turned his back to me and simply walked away, his footsteps heavy as he disappeared into the hallway. My heart sank at the thought of looking into those silver eyes. Kaelen’s low, commanding voice. M

  • His Regret, My Rise   CHAPTER 11

CHAPTER 11: THE HOSPITAL REVELATIONSERA'S POVThe apartment was quiet when the door clicked shut behind me.Too quiet.I walked through the living room and stopped dead.My mother was on the couch, surrounded by photographs. Dozens of them. Spread across the coffee table, the cushions, the floor at her feet. Photos I'd packed in boxes when I left Damian's house. Photos I hadn't looked at since.Photos of my wedding, of Theo as a baby, Damian and me, smiling, pretending to be happy. She looked up when I entered, her eyes wet with tears. She pointed at the photos, at Damian, at Theo, at me in my wedding dress and made a questioning gesture.Who are these people? Where are they now?I set down my bag. Sat across from her. Took a deep breath."That's my ex-husband." I pointed at Damian. "His name is Damian. We were married for five years."She studied his face. Frowned. She looked at me."He wasn't a good man." The words came out harder than I intended. "He cheated on me with another wom

CHAPTER 10: THE TRUTH COMES OUTSERA'S POVThe coffee was perfect.I sipped it slowly, leaning against the kitchen counter, watching my mother move around my apartment like she belonged there. She'd found the coffee maker without asking. Found the mugs. Made me a cup exactly the way I liked it with cream, no sugar, as if fourteen years of separation meant nothing. As if she'd always known.I was halfway through my second sip when I glanced at the clock on the microwave.8:47 AM.My eyes widened. No. That couldn't be right. I'd set my alarm for 7:00. I always set my alarm. The memory hit me. I'd turned it off in my sleep. Exhaustion from the night before had pulled me under so deep I hadn't stirred since.Work started at 8:30.I was seventeen minutes late."Shit." I slammed the mug down, coffee sloshing over the rim. "Shit, shit, shit."My mother appeared at my side, her face creased with concern. She touched my arm, questioning."I'm late for work. My first real week and I'm LATE."S

The hair was matted, dirty, hanging in greasy strands. Her clothes were ragged, stained, looking like she'd been dumpster diving for weeks. Maybe months. But her face. Her face was etched with lines I didn't recognize, weathered by years and hardship. But beneath them, beneath the dirt and the exhaustion and the impossible reality of her standing there…Eyes that I'd seen in photographs my entire life.Eyes that couldn't be real because she died when I was twelve. My mother.I stumbled back from the door, my hand flying to my mouth. Liora surg

  • His Regret, My Rise   CHAPTER 8: THE SABOTAGE

CHAPTER 8: THE SABOTAGESERA'S POVThe conference room was all glass and chrome, designed to impress. It worked. Everyone around the massive table looked like they belonged on magazine covers , sharp suits, perfect hair, confidence radiating from every pore. And then there was me.I sat near the end of the table, trying not to fidget in my new dress, my second day on the job and already in an executive meeting. Kaelen had insisted. "You're part of the team now," he'd said this morning. "You should be in the room."So here I was. In the room. Feeling like a fraud. And like I didn't even belong here…The introductions went around the table. Department heads. Senior managers. Each one smiled, nodded, said something welcoming. "Glad to have you." "Heard great things." "Welcome aboard."Then the introductions reached her."Patricia Vance, the Senior Operations Manager."Dark blonde hair pulled back in a severe ponytail. Expensive navy suit. She had eyes the color of cold steel that fixed o

He was across the room in three strides, his back to me, one hand gripping the back of a visitor chair hard enough to leave dents."I'm sorry." His voice was ravaged. "I shouldn't have... that was...I'm sorry."I couldn't speak. Could barely breathe. My lips still tingled from the pressure of his, my body still hummed with the electricity of being so close to him.Liora was howling with joy in my mind. MATE. HE KISSED US. HE WANTS US. MATE.Shut up, I told her weakly. I need to think. But thinking was impossible when every nerve ending was still firing from that kiss.Kaelen turned, and the look on his face made my heart clench.
