Aliya stood at the top of the stairs with one hand beneath her stomach, watching me like an evil hawk.

"Where is he?" I demanded, my voice hard.

"The elders called him,” she shrugged.

"Then I'll wait inside."

She stepped in front of the door.

"You really don't know when you're no longer wanted."

"Move out of my way, Aliya. This room is mine."

"Why? So you can show him that piece of paper?"

My fingers tightened around the pregnancy report.

Her eyes dropped to it.

Then to the hand I had placed over my stomach.

Her smile disappeared.

"You're pregnant."

I tried to hide the report behind me.

"That's none of your business."

"How far along?" she snapped, eyes red.

"Move away, Aliya."

Instead of moving, she reached out and grabbed the paper.

But I held on fiercely.

In a second, it tore between us.

Aliya looked at the half in her hand.

Her face went pale.

"Five weeks."

I snatched it back.

"Antonio will know as soon as he returns."

"No,” she shook her head, “I will never let you have him again!”

"You cannot stop me."

"These children are Damian's heirs."

"I never said they weren't."

"If you give Antonio his own child, the Pack will forget mine."

"That isn't my problem,” I snapped, “you’re the one trying to ruin my bond with my mate.”

Her eyes filled with more hatred.

"Everything was finally mine," she whispered, her eyes moist.

The audacity of this woman. Am I supposed to pity her?

"You already took my title, my room and my mate. What more do you want?"

"I want you gone!" she snarled.

"Then congratulations. After I speak to Antonio, you can have him."

I turned toward the stairs.

Aliya grabbed my arm.

"You think he'll let you leave after finding out you're pregnant?"

"Let go of me, Aliya," I hissed.

"He'll make you Luna. He'll give your child everything,” she screeched, her claws digging into my skin.

"I said let go!" I pulled free and reached for the railing.

Her hands struck my back.

I wasn't expecting it and holding the rail didn't work as gravity pulled me down the long flight of stairs.

The floor disappeared beneath me.

My screams were loud as pain hit everywhere in my body until my body collided with the ground floor.

Pain exploded through my shoulder.

My hip.

My stomach.

Then I hit the floor, screaming in pain and shock.

For a few seconds, I couldn't breathe.

When I stopped screaming, only letting out sobs, that’s when I felt it.

Warm blood spread between my legs.

"No,” I gasped, refusing to believe this.

I pressed both hands against my stomach.

"No, no, please."

The bedroom door opened upstairs.

Antonio stepped out, frowning.

He looked at Aliya first, and then he saw me.

"Cara?" he called, his eyes filled with familiar concern.

He came down two steps.

Relief entered me.

He was coming.

He had finally seen what she had done.

But Aliya suddenly screamed.

"The babies! They're coming! Ahh!”

She bent over, clutching her stomach.

Fluid ran down her legs.

He stopped.

His eyes moved between us.

"She pushed me," I gasped. "Antonio, she pushed me."

Aliya cried louder.

"Please, Damian. Don't let our babies die."

Antonio ran back up the stairs without hesitation.

He lifted her into his arms.

My cries paused in my throat as I watched in shock as he quickly put his arms around her and carried her screaming form.

"Alfred!" he shouted.

The old butler rushed into the hall.

"Take Cara to the hospital."

Antonio carried Aliya down.

I reached for him when he passed me.

"I'm pregnant,” I said, desperate.

He looked down at the blood around me.

Disbelief crossed his face.

"Not now, Cara."

"Our baby—"

"Don't do this while Aliya is in labor!"

He pulled away from my hand.

Then he ran out of the Pack house with Aliya in his arms.

I watched him leave.

Even after everything, I had believed that if he knew about our baby, he would choose us.

Now I have my answer.

I didn't question it, I was too overwhelmed by the scent of him that coated the entire room.It was twice as big as my room in the Palace and yet the bed was placed close to the door. The sheets smelled like him and my wolf purred in my head. The feeling was shocking but I was in too much pain to react to it.If there's anything good this weird feeling I was developing for Xavier was doing for me, it's the way my wolf is finally showing itself. It's in small, distanced incidents but it's way more than I've had all my life.Makes me wonder what would happen if I push this further."You shouldn't have let her beat you up like that," he muttered as he came out of the bathroom with a first aid box in his hand."I don't think telling her not to would have been effective," I murmured, my throat hurt too."What I'm saying is, you know she's stronger than you, why provoke her?""You know why I did it. And y

CARA'S POV The next morning, I was up later than I'd planned. That orgasm had weakened me in a strange way, almost like my limbs turned to jelly. But time for that was over and I need to get out there and hopefully all the things I've been learning will work.I wore loose pants, and a leather top that clung to my skin. When I stepped out of my room, I had this tingling sensation but I ignored it instantly.I'm not letting Alpha Xavier distract me today.I've gone and attached myself to this Pack for the next unforeseeable future and I refuse to stay in such a hostile environment and be seen as food. When I got down to the training ground, sparring was already in session.Celene was with another guy, making me scared.I'd practiced everything with her in mind, how am I supposed to start learning the strengths and weaknesses of a new person?I have only one shot at this, if I lose today, nobody will t

XAVIER'S POV The kitchen was a fortress for me for a few minutes, keeping me away from the stupid pull that's demanding I follow her.Soon, it became a painful prison. I'd not cooked in anything in over a decade, never knew I'd enjoy it this much.My mind replayed the moment she tasted the meal, the way her eyes closed and her tongue licked her lips. There and then, I knew I had discovered another Cara related obsession. The hair band I was fisting in my pocket right now was proof I was losing control.Completely.I'd followed her down here without taking the herbs. What if our skin had come in contact with how much I kept driving myself into her space? This was getting dangerous.I should tell her, I should stop taking this damn herb and just let everything out in the open. But I'm an Alpha, I don't have that luxury. Everything still hung in the air because there's no assurance that

"When did Princesses start snooping around?" Xavier asked in a thick drawl, walking towards me. Shirtless. Goddess, he knows what he does to me and is practically having fun punishing me. I swallowed hard before looking down at my cereal. It tasted like ash now. My tongue wanted to taste something else. "I was hungry," I finally replied, my voice hoarse. "You wouldn't have been if you had come down to the Pack dinner like everyone else. Didn't you agree to try to get familiar with the Pack?" I sighed, "it's pointless doing that if they keep seeing me as a weakling with no bite." "So what? You were training alone? How does that work?" "Don't worry, when it works, you won't look at me like that again." He chuckled and I looked before I could stop myself. When did he get so close? And why does he smell so... No, it's a

"Cara? Are you good?" Lucian's voice echoed from the phone."Yes. Sera said you're overworking yourself again."He exhaled loudly."There's so much at stake and I seem to be the only one aware of that. Lots of these Alphas just come to the meeting as though they're taking a break from Pack work. But don't worry, everything is under control.""Remember what you told me before I left? About Xavier?""Oh Cara, please tell me you didn't go antagonising him about it. I don't want you getting hurt. I trust he's a good man underneath all that rage but you don't want to provoke him.""Too late," I chuckled and I caught Xavier smiling."Cara...""And we came up with a solution.""You did?""So you have to promise to keep an open mind.""I don't like the sound of this. What did you do Cara?""I told him to trust that you won't betray him. And if you do, he can.. do whatever he wants with me.""Cara!""Calm down Lucian, you sound like you do plan to betray him.""Of course I don't but these thin

I knocked and he looked up."Come in, Cara."His Beta was walking out as I came in and I ignored the way she looked at me.She'll be fine."You wanted to see me?""Sit."I didn't miss the clipped tone he was using and I realized he must have spoken to himself as well. And now he's drawing boundaries. That's good, at least one of us has a leash on their body. I should take lessons from him."So," he exhaled, pulling out a paper from a file, "your brother says you're to be here for protection. And while I understand that, I need to know what your own plans are. You don't strike me as somebody who likes to eat and sleep all day."It felt like he was a completely different person than I was used to.All prim and proper, even his clothes were pristine and different. That should make me sit up, curb this hunger. It does the opposite.I imagine what he'll do to me in that serious, business like tone of his.It was like one of the morally grey characters from my novels suddenly creeped out.I
