LOGINMy mate had seen the blood surrounding me, yet it was Alfred who took me to the hospital.
I'd blacked out before the nurses got me out of the car.
When I woke up, I was still in pain but it wasn't as bad as before.
My entire body felt painfully empty.
I looked around the room, and realized I was all alone, just like I’d been before Antonio came into my life.
The door suddenly opened and the doctor entered with a file in his hand.
His eyes held a certain sadness in them that confirmed my fears.
"I'm sorry, Cara,” he said, and I could tell he was really sad about this because he’d witnessed all my pains while searching for this baby.
Only to lose it now.
He exhaled loudly, "We couldn't save the baby, but we'll need to flush it out before it ruins your womb completely. We'll need the Alpha's signature for the surgery.”
My hand slowly slipped down from my stomach to my lap, my brain and body struggling to process everything.
My baby...
Something broke in me, not my heart, I think that one had shattered completely since last night.
But my hope, my joy, what made them call me silly and whimsical...
"We need to do it urgently, will you call him?" he spoke up again, drawing my attention.
I swallowed and tried our mindlink but it was firmly shut against me so I took the doctor's phone and called his number that was seared into my memory.
It rang for a while before he finally picked up.
"Who's this?"
There was noise behind him, Aliya was screaming.
Healers giving instructions.
The chaos of childbirth that she’d denied me.
"It's Cara. I just lost the baby and I need your signature for the surgery."
He went silent for a moment.
"What baby are you talking about?”
"The baby I told you about. I had the report."
“This isn't the time for your little games, Cara! Aliya is in labour!”
Except he's helping her push the baby out, I don't know what part of that means he gets to keep yelling at me.
"She pushed me down the stairs,” I told him, my lips quivering.
Is he really choosing her after what she’d done?
"She is in labor and bleeding. Stop blaming her for your fall."
"Our child is dead!” I screamed, as if that would make any difference.
It didn’t.
He released an angry breath, "Enough of this nonsense, Cara. I'm not letting you invent a dead child because Aliya is having living ones."
A baby's cry came through the phone.
Someone shouted that it was a boy.
Antonio laughed, joy filling his voice.
"She just gave birth to twins! Can you believe that? Aliya is really strong and –"
I ended the call.
The doctor’s pitiful looks made me want to disappear into thin air.
"Why can't I sign it myself?" I asked him, trying to sound strong even though I felt like shit inside.
"But he's the Alpha..."
"Well, he's busy at the moment helping his new... his sister-in-law give birth. I'll sign it myself."
"But –"
"Doctor, I'm a full-grown adult! Give me the damn thing, let me sign so you can save my womb for goddess's sake!”
"Sorry, I'm going to bring it now," he rushed off, the door slamming shut behind him.
When he comes back, he's with the paperwork and with shaking hands, I sign my name.
With my old surname and not his own.
After the surgery, I found my way home, feeling like I'd been run over by a train.
Antonio came into our room while I was slowly putting my clothes into a case.
He looked tired but pleased.
"Aliya gave birth to twins," he announced with pride. "A boy and a girl."
I said nothing.
"They're strong. Damian would have been proud."
"I'm sure."
He frowned, "Are you still angry?"
I stopped what I was doing and looked at him.
"I had surgery this morning."
"For what?"
"To remove what was left of our baby."
His expression hardened.
"Do you have any proof of this or are you letting your jealousy make you invent fake scenarios?"
I almost laughed.
"Proof?"
"Yes, Cara. A report. A scan. Anything."
"Aliya tore the report before she pushed me,” I answered, wincing at the memory.
"Of course she did."
The sarcasm in his voice destroyed the last weak part of me that still wanted him to understand.
"You saw the blood."
"That could have all been a part of your schemes. I saw you at the bottom of the stairs. I did not see Aliya push you."
"So you don’t believe me?”
"I believe a woman in labor would not risk her children just to hurt you."
He walked toward the wardrobe and pulled out a clean shirt.
"The twins' naming dinner is tomorrow."
I stared at him.
"What’s that got to do with me?"
He exhaled in irritation, "You organized some important Pack events for years. Handle the dinner."
"You want me to organize a celebration for her children."
"For Damian's children."
"You want me to organize the naming ceremony for the woman who made me lose my child? The day after I lost my pregnancy?”
Antonio's patience finally broke.
"I told you to stop saying that!" he snarled, his Alpha voice shaking the room.
"I am not asking you to love the twins. I am asking you to behave like the Luna you keep insisting you should be."
"Aliya is Luna. You announced it yourself."
"Then behave like my mate and support my decision."
His eyes suddenly shut and I knew Aliya was calling him through the mind-link.
Antonio paused.
Then he headed for the door.
"You know what? Get some sleep," he said. "You'll feel foolish about all this tomorrow."
He left after that, slamming the door harder than necessary.
I stood alone in the room for a long time.
Then I finished packing.
One week ago, a man named Lucian Donovan had sent me a message claiming to be my brother.
He said I had been taken from the Royal Pack as a child.
I had ignored him because it sounded impossible.
Now I opened the message again.
“If you ever need a safe way out, contact me. I will come myself.”
So I finally typed back, “I need to leave tonight.”
His response came immediately.
“I'm already on my way, my Princess.”
I didn't question it, I was too overwhelmed by the scent of him that coated the entire room.It was twice as big as my room in the Palace and yet the bed was placed close to the door. The sheets smelled like him and my wolf purred in my head. The feeling was shocking but I was in too much pain to react to it.If there's anything good this weird feeling I was developing for Xavier was doing for me, it's the way my wolf is finally showing itself. It's in small, distanced incidents but it's way more than I've had all my life.Makes me wonder what would happen if I push this further."You shouldn't have let her beat you up like that," he muttered as he came out of the bathroom with a first aid box in his hand."I don't think telling her not to would have been effective," I murmured, my throat hurt too."What I'm saying is, you know she's stronger than you, why provoke her?""You know why I did it. And y
CARA'S POV The next morning, I was up later than I'd planned. That orgasm had weakened me in a strange way, almost like my limbs turned to jelly. But time for that was over and I need to get out there and hopefully all the things I've been learning will work.I wore loose pants, and a leather top that clung to my skin. When I stepped out of my room, I had this tingling sensation but I ignored it instantly.I'm not letting Alpha Xavier distract me today.I've gone and attached myself to this Pack for the next unforeseeable future and I refuse to stay in such a hostile environment and be seen as food. When I got down to the training ground, sparring was already in session.Celene was with another guy, making me scared.I'd practiced everything with her in mind, how am I supposed to start learning the strengths and weaknesses of a new person?I have only one shot at this, if I lose today, nobody will t
XAVIER'S POV The kitchen was a fortress for me for a few minutes, keeping me away from the stupid pull that's demanding I follow her.Soon, it became a painful prison. I'd not cooked in anything in over a decade, never knew I'd enjoy it this much.My mind replayed the moment she tasted the meal, the way her eyes closed and her tongue licked her lips. There and then, I knew I had discovered another Cara related obsession. The hair band I was fisting in my pocket right now was proof I was losing control.Completely.I'd followed her down here without taking the herbs. What if our skin had come in contact with how much I kept driving myself into her space? This was getting dangerous.I should tell her, I should stop taking this damn herb and just let everything out in the open. But I'm an Alpha, I don't have that luxury. Everything still hung in the air because there's no assurance that
"When did Princesses start snooping around?" Xavier asked in a thick drawl, walking towards me. Shirtless. Goddess, he knows what he does to me and is practically having fun punishing me. I swallowed hard before looking down at my cereal. It tasted like ash now. My tongue wanted to taste something else. "I was hungry," I finally replied, my voice hoarse. "You wouldn't have been if you had come down to the Pack dinner like everyone else. Didn't you agree to try to get familiar with the Pack?" I sighed, "it's pointless doing that if they keep seeing me as a weakling with no bite." "So what? You were training alone? How does that work?" "Don't worry, when it works, you won't look at me like that again." He chuckled and I looked before I could stop myself. When did he get so close? And why does he smell so... No, it's a
"Cara? Are you good?" Lucian's voice echoed from the phone."Yes. Sera said you're overworking yourself again."He exhaled loudly."There's so much at stake and I seem to be the only one aware of that. Lots of these Alphas just come to the meeting as though they're taking a break from Pack work. But don't worry, everything is under control.""Remember what you told me before I left? About Xavier?""Oh Cara, please tell me you didn't go antagonising him about it. I don't want you getting hurt. I trust he's a good man underneath all that rage but you don't want to provoke him.""Too late," I chuckled and I caught Xavier smiling."Cara...""And we came up with a solution.""You did?""So you have to promise to keep an open mind.""I don't like the sound of this. What did you do Cara?""I told him to trust that you won't betray him. And if you do, he can.. do whatever he wants with me.""Cara!""Calm down Lucian, you sound like you do plan to betray him.""Of course I don't but these thin
I knocked and he looked up."Come in, Cara."His Beta was walking out as I came in and I ignored the way she looked at me.She'll be fine."You wanted to see me?""Sit."I didn't miss the clipped tone he was using and I realized he must have spoken to himself as well. And now he's drawing boundaries. That's good, at least one of us has a leash on their body. I should take lessons from him."So," he exhaled, pulling out a paper from a file, "your brother says you're to be here for protection. And while I understand that, I need to know what your own plans are. You don't strike me as somebody who likes to eat and sleep all day."It felt like he was a completely different person than I was used to.All prim and proper, even his clothes were pristine and different. That should make me sit up, curb this hunger. It does the opposite.I imagine what he'll do to me in that serious, business like tone of his.It was like one of the morally grey characters from my novels suddenly creeped out.I
