Chapter 1

Lizzie

I knew I couldn’t stay; it was only two weeks till my birthday, but I knew it wasn’t safe for me to stay at the group home once my wolf woke up. I was a rouge and as much as I wanted to stay and graduate, I just couldn’t. I wouldn’t put the other girls at risk, the group home had been my home for the last two years. If the local pack found me, they wouldn’t stop till they had killed me. They hated all rogues and hunted them down. So, I started to put my plan into action. I had been saving every penny since I started working at 15. Becky had taken a chance hiring me and I had found a family of sorts working with the staff of The Coffee Bean. Becky always made sure I had a full stomach, she never let me leave without taking food along. I had no idea what I was going to do without Becky and John. I needed to let her know I was leaving. I know I was going to miss her for the rest of my life! I only had two weeks left till my life turned upside down again!

Two weeks later my bag was packed, and all my money was hidden in my travel purse hidden under my sweatshirt. It was 11 o’clock at night and the staff had made their final walk through of the night and I only had a few hours to sneak out and get as far as possible before they found out I was gone. Becky and John had given me as much money and food as I could fit in my bag. I am so sad to be losing them and my friends at the group home, life would never be the same. I got up and opened the window slowly hoping that my three roommates were fully asleep. Then the window squeaked! I froze and waited. Sarah turned over in her sleep and started talking about selling chickens. I had to bite my lip to keep in my giggle, I somehow got the window up the rest of the way without any more noise. I took one last look around and dropped my bag onto the ground climbed out and closed it slowly. I was so thankful I had been moved to a 1st story room three months earlier. It made life so much easier. I hopped on my bike and started riding towards the city, I would be safer hiding there with other rogues who didn’t have a pack either. I couldn’t stay here once my wolf was awake.

Halfway between Blue Lake and Carson City something felt wrong, I feel so sick! I pulled off the road and walked a few feet into the trees, hoping that it would be enough cover and I could sit down for a moment and rest. I felt different things seemed to be louder and I could see things better. I knew what this meant. Before my mom had died, she told me what to expect and what would be happening when my wolf woke up. Thinking of my mom was always painful, she had died six years ago but it still felt like yesterday. My mom had told me to run when the pack had come for her. We had been running since we had escaped my stepfather. He had been abusing my mom for years and I had finally convinced her to leave and run. We had made it only to the next city as before he had caught up with us. My mom had looked me in the eyes and screamed at me to run and never look back, and I did. I ran as far as I could and never stopped. Six years and I still remembered what it felt like to run away from my mom knowing I would never see her again and that I was all alone in this world.

Shay whispered to me “you aren’t alone anymore Lizzie”; we are together now, and I won’t let anyone hurt you. Hearing Shay for the first time was so comforting and yet so weird. It was an odd sensation to know that she was there, and she would always be with me. Shay is my wolf, and we are two sides to the same coin. I stood up stretched and felt better knowing I had Shay with me.

Lizzie “Shay will we need to shift tonight, or do we have time? I don’t think I can tonight”

Shay “no we have time, we will need to soon, but we don’t need to do anything tonight. Most wolves usually shift within a month of their birthday.”

Lizzie, “ok that’s good because tonight we have a long way to go. We need to make it to Carson City by the morning so that we can hide. The Blood Moon Pack will be looking for us in Blue Lake and we can’t let them find us.”

Shay nodded her head and said she completely understood, “we better get a move on then.”
