CALLIE

It was only the first week of rehearsals, and as expected, Miss Dickson was already as passionate as ever. Mindy, too, was already hollering for everyone to “get into character” and “feel the scene with your souls.”

In the middle of the stage stood none other than my future boyfriend. He was dressed casually, but that didn’t diminish his handsomeness one bit. He was standing across from Athena, illuminated by a spotlight that had been precariously rigged from the ceiling, the two of them rehearsing a pivotal scene together. And not just any scene—the kiss! The emotional midpoint where Anderson and Mia finally forget everything else and give in to their true feelings.

I fiddled nervously with the handle of a paint roller, desperately trying not to look. But my eyes had a mind of their own, betraying my determination.

Athena laughed at something he said, her hand lightly brushing against his chest.

I looked away, trying to shake off the twinge of jealousy. This was just a pla

  • His Secret Heir, His Deepest Regret   Chapter 12: CALLIE

CALLIEIt’s been a while since I last cried. I didn’t shed a tear when the twins got sick and had to be hospitalized. Instead, I missed school and took care of them like I was their second mom. I didn’t cry when I had to skip the senior field trip because we didn’t have enough money for accommodations or even for the ridiculous T-shirt we were required to wear. I just stayed home, whipped up some spaghetti from what we had in the fridge, and spun tales for my siblings about a future trip to Europe instead. And when my dad died—when the world tilted dramatically for all of us—I didn’t cry until three months later, long after everyone else had stopped grieving. So why, then? Why was I crying for Andy Johnson? Maybe it was because I hadn’t fully realized, until that exact moment, just how much of my heart I had quietly handed over to him. How much space he had occupied in my thoughts without even asking. He was a significant part of my life, even if I was merely a tiny background char

ANDYWe’d been held back. Miss Dickson stood at the front of the rehearsal room. Her eyes swept over us—Athena and me—looking as though she took our performance personally. “That kissing scene,” she began, one hand resting on her hip while the other wielded a stick of chalk, pointing it directly at us. “It’s still lacking chemistry. It’s not bad, mind you, but it’s not quite believable. You’re supposed to be madly in love—tortured, conflicted!” I clenched my jaw. We’d done the scene three times already, and the fourth attempt felt no better. “Again,” she commanded, snapping her fingers. I turned to Athena. Her eyes sparkled under the harsh spotlight, her expression shifting to one of encouragement as she smiled slightly, inching closer. Her cheek tilted toward mine. Finally, I looked deeply into her eyes, and I felt her breath hitch in anticipation. I mustered the most lovesick look I could conjure. The faster we completed this, the faster we could leave. Our lips were mere bre

ANDYI was nearly at the corner of my building, ready to head back to my pad, when I heard a voice behind me. “Andy Johnson, right?” A familiar tone rang out.I turned and—great. Miss Dickson, in her usual eccentric fashion, was donning a bright scarf that looked like it had escaped from a circus. “You’re the lead for this year’s production, correct? Illusion of Roses?” she added. I paused. “Yes, ma’am.”Athena stood behind her, her hands clasped neatly in front of her. “I was just looking for you,” Miss Dickson continued, her eyes sparkling with excitement. “I wanted a quick chat with the leads and the director. Mindy and I will be upstairs speaking with the writers for a moment, but could you two wait for us inside that café?”I pursed my lips as I glanced behind. Athena linked her arms behind her back and swayed slightly on her heels. “Of course, Miss Dickson. We’ll be there.”I didn’t say anything, simply sighed and nodded, shoving my hands deep into my pockets. We stepped i

  • His Secret Heir, His Deepest Regret   Chapter 8: CALLIE

CALLIE This was a grand opportunity.Sure, I’d never acted before—not unless you count pretending the roleplays I did with the twins back at home. I’ve been a princess, a maid, a bartender, a mom, and a dad. You name it. I’ve probably done it all. I knew this was different, but I wanted to step out of my comfort zone, like Andy. He was already doing something outside his element, and if I was being honest, I wanted to meet him there. It felt like the right kind of terrifying. So when Mindy asked, “Anybody else?” and looked around the room, I stood up and raised my hand.“What’s your name again?” she asked. “Callie!” I exclaimed excitedly. There was a slight frown on her forehead before she turned around to write my name on the board. “Anyone else?” she asked. There were crickets. “Great,” she said, clapping once. “Let’s hear from each of you. Just a little about yourself, maybe why you want to play Mia.”Athena stood first before I had the opportunity to raise my hand. “Hi, I

ANDYAnother pack of strawberry jelly sat on my desk before I even had the chance to draw a breath. I stared at it for a moment before letting out a weary sigh. “Don’t worry. That’s new,” Callie whispered, settling into the seat beside mine. I glanced at the colorful packaging and then back at her, shaking my head before reluctantly taking it. Arguing with her was an exercise in futility—she’d just leave it there anyway, and I’d invariably find it squished beneath my textbooks later on. “Thanks,” I muttered. She beamed widely as she pulled out her notebook, eager to begin our class. Just then, a tall woman in a flowing mustard-yellow dress strutted in: our General Art teacher—a strict woman with boundless ambition—Miss Dickson. The thick frames of her glasses magnified her piercing gaze, and the bangles on her arms clinked with every move. “We met just yesterday for introductions, but now it’s time to get down to business! I’m thrilled to be your General Art instructor," she st
