(Nick POV)

My second visit to the Blue River Mountain Pack wasn’t planned. I went at the last-minute, for no other reason than the surprise detour seemed like a fitting use of my time.

When I arrived, the pack’s gamma met me at the gates. He was startled to hear that I had been communicating with Ms. Maxwell, and he was horrified to learn that she had offered me breakfast.

I watched with interest as he mind-linked his superiors, quite obviously trying to work out a plan.

  • His Secret Second   Chapter 57: He Decides

(Danny POV)The Moon Goddess had blessed me with two very different mates.Logically, I knew that made me lucky. However, in my heart of hearts, it felt more like punishment. Both of my mates were dying. One, physically. The other, emotionally. And both at my hands.I wanted desperately to fix this situation and make things better for both of them. I just didn’t know how.In the back of my mind, I heard my grandfather’s voice telling me that –whenever I wasn’t sure what to do—I should focus on doing the right thing. The problem was that I didn’t know what that was.I loved Jenna. That part was clear. But other things that should have been simple just weren’t anymore. Since Beth returned, I had bent the rules in certain ways, and I was now stuck seeing them through. The consequences, if I didn’t, would be catastrophic. And now I learned that Beth would need to stay with us much, much longer than we had ever expected. That reality sent everything else into chaos. Soon after Jen

  • His Secret Second   Chapter 56: Time Stands Still

(Jenna POV)“No, you can’t.”Just three and a half words. And yet they had just turned my entire life upside down. They kept echoing in my brain over and over again, while Beth sat there shocked and Ashley called Kade and Danny downstairs for an immediate meeting with Dr. Patel and Nurse Jessica.“No, you can’t.”What was I supposed to do now?Beth needed to stay at Blue River Mountain Pack. That much seemed clear. And I didn’t fault her for that. But where did that leave me?I could not agree to remain a secret for the next 18 months. Nor could I agree to share my mate for that long. That wasn’t fair to me, or to Willow, or even to Mason. And yet, I couldn’t reject Danny for this, could I?“He needs to choose us, Jenna,” Willow whispered softly. “It doesn’t have to be a choice between Beth or us, unless he makes it one. She already knows that he is our mate. She will understand.”Willow was right, as she usually was. But I couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more to th

  • His Secret Second   Chapter 55: The Timeline Changes

(Jenna POV)“How are you not jumping his a&&?” Ashley asked.“What?”“Dr. Patel. He’s young, he’s HOT, and he’s a doctor. I bet half of his patients fake cancer just to get his hands on them.”“Ashley!!!” I cried out.She ignored me.“He’s a good doctor, right, Beth?”“The best.”“I didn’t see a mark on his neck.”“I think he’s single,” Beth replied hesitantly.“Good. That’s good.”Beth and I exchanged looks.“On the hot male matrix,” Ashley continued, almost as though she was talking to herself, “his doctor status bumps him up a few steps… which then again, makes him that much more likely to be an a&&hole… but who cares if he makes it worth your while.” She turned back to Beth.“So, Beth, I ask again, why aren’t you humping him?”Beth’s jaw dropped. She wasn’t used to Ashley.I only barely was.Ashley took Beth’s silence as confirmation.“Oh my goddess! You ARE humping him, aren’t you?” Ashley exclaimed. She had the excitement of a schoolgirl who had just stumbled on the worl

  • His Secret Second   Chapter 54: Time to Shop

(Jenna POV)I looked down at the hair in my hand in disbelief.I then looked at Beth, who despite walking slowly, had somehow managed to get herself to the couch while I stood there like an idiot.“Beth, is this ---”“My hair?” she said, half bitterly and half sadly. “Yeah. It has been slowly starting to fall out. An extra strand here; an extra strand there. Today was the first time that it started falling out in big chunks.”I went and sat down on the couch next to her.“Is that why you were in the closet crying?’She nodded.“I know it’s stupid. It’s just hair. But,” she took a deep breath and sighed, “it’s the only thing I have going for me.”I didn’t say anything at first. I wasn’t sure what was appropriate.“All my life, I have known that I was ordinary,” Beth continued. “An ordinary wolf from an ordinary family.”“But you have that huge following on your travel blog ---"“That anyone else could do. It doesn’t make me special.”She stared at her hands.“But my hair… do y

  • His Secret Second   Chapter 53: The Next Five Days

(Jenna POV)The next five days with Danny were great —in a strangely beautiful, ordinary way.I still had to work —and he did too, if the number of times he checked his phone each day meant anything—but even so, we had a good time together. We didn’t go out in public, because although Beth knew about us, others didn’t. However, given the limited amount of time we had, I found that I didn’t resent it. Staying in felt like us starting to create our own little world, just the two of us.Danny was horrified to learn that I loved watching true-crime documentaries and court TV shows, despite doing it for a living. I was horrified to discover that he couldn’t watch any of them without asking a hundred questions —and at all the worst times. We ended up compromising and watching a lot of historical movies and documentaries.I would later find irony in that compromise. I might have then too, if I had taken the time to think about it. But I didn't.Instead, I focused on what I could contr

  • His Secret Second   Chapter 52: Reconnection

(Jenna POV)Two hours after Danny angrily stormed out of my cottage, I heard a knock on my front door.I could guess who it was, but I wasn’t sure that I wanted to answer.Did I understand Danny being angry that Beth could be doing more to make herself better, and wasn’t? Yes, absolutely. Did I expect him to be THAT angry? No.A part of me worried that he only got that angry because he still loved her. Maybe a big part of me.Big enough that, after he left, I spent over an hour staring at the same sentence on my computer screen, trying and failing to get some work done on a memo that my co-worker needed me to write.Willow didn’t say it, but I think she was worried too. She even tried to get me to follow Danny to the packhouse. “Just to make sure Beth is okay. You know what Danny’s temper is like,” she had linked me.I knew her concern for Beth rang hollow. Willow was protective and possessive.Maybe all of these conflicting feelings were why, when Danny showed back up at my c
