The woman beside Cara was the first to greet us, her eyes flickering from me to her cousin with ease.

Then she stepped forward with a strained smile.

“Cousin Nero,” her voice was smooth and clear as water. “What a pleasant surprise. Grandfather will be extremely pleased to see you.”

Nero smiled, one that was cutting and mirthless.

“That is why I’m here, Vera.”

Then he nodded to Cara, who nodded back slowly. As we walked past, Cara’s eyes met mine and she smiled, mouthing, “Welcome.”

I barely managed to smile back, the tension was overwhelming. And we hadn’t even entered the fray.

The hall was large, and as soon as we entered several more eyes looked at us.

Instantly my body stiffened.

I had spent a long night trying to break into the safe, and barely managed to crack the first three codes. Already I was exhausted, longing to bury myself under the covers in my bedroom and pass the day away.

Now?

It felt like I had just entered a den of wild beasts.

I followed Nero, my instincts working

It was utter fortitude that my grandfather was present, or I would see all of them dead. If NOT for my grandfather, I would not have come. The man raised me, taught me more about being a man than my father ever did. Eliza’s face had paled, looking every bit as disgusting as she always had. “Angelo,” my lips curled up into a lazy smile. So he had arrived after all. “Come to defend your mother as always. How chivalrous of you.” His one eye glinted at me with the look of murder written on his face. For a moment, around us, no one breathed. And I relished in it, seeing Angelo approach, seething. “Watch your words, Nero,” Angelo gritted out. “Or I shall cut it out for you.” “Dare to and I’ll take that other eye of yours,” I replied easily. My gun was within reach. I could shoot my way out of here anytime. It would be difficult, but not impossible. “Your mother is more than capable of facing the consequences of her own behavior on her own. Don’t make this about you.” Veins on h

Nero didn't give me a glance as he approached the front porch.“Who was it?” He asked, and I knew he was talking about the stalker of that man— whoever the fuck he was.“No one I know,” I shrugged minutely, handing him a silver ring upon which sat a crest. “This was his. He wouldn’t talk.”So I cut out his tongue before shooting him, I thought. I had needed an outlet for my anger.“Hmm,” he said, looking at the ring briefly before placing it in his pocket. A part of me wanted to ask, but he had already walked back into the ma shook before I could say a word.I stood, feeling the cool evening breeze. My jaw clenched, eyes fixed on that spot where that man’s car had been.Who was he to Nero?My heart thrundered in my chest, and I curled my hands into fists, returning inside.Nero had entered his study, and I had the feeling he wouldn’t send for me tonight. So I got to my bedroom, slamming the door shut. What was this feeling?I paced around the room which seemed to constrict around me,

As expected, Avi chose the right time to make his entrance, right as I returned to the mansion after dealing with a minor issue at the ports. Angelo’s men had begun searching the area in earnest trying to trace the location of his goods.Luckily I wasn’t such an easy target. The sight of the cream vintage car was nothing compared to the sight of the man himself.“Nero Vecchio, aren’t you a sight for sore eyes?” He chuckled softly, walking up to me as I exited my vehicle.Avi Ceretti’s words were spoken with a hint of mirth and also reproach.“You never called me,” he stated, and I rolled my eyes inwardly at the hurt expression that faintly graced his attractive features. To say that Avi and I had history… was an understatement.I shrugged neatly.“I’ve been busy. And you’re here for business, Avi,” I reminded him with less humor in my tone.“Busy undermining Angelo, you mean,” he chuckled again despite the obvious glare I shot at him.As I walked in I saw Dante look up, meeting my gaz

The bathroom was quiet. I made not one sound as I turned on the tap, cupping water and lowering my wave to wash. The taste of Nero’s essence lingered on my tongue, and I grabbed the toothbrush half-blindly, almost crazed in my movements to squeeze out the toothpaste onto its bristles. Not even the taste of mint toothpaste could wash off his touch. I spat the water I’d gargled into the bathroom sink, feeling the droplets of water cool my face.A glance at the mirror in front of me told me everything; I looked exhausted, but more than that I looked as ashamed as I felt.Like a dog called to heel.Thinking of those brief periods when I had been on my knees in the study, letting Nero do whatever he wanted, even enjoying a little of it - the way tingles ran down my spine when his fingernails scratched at my scalp teasingly, his grip on the back of my neck as he thrusted, or that strange stirring I felt when he called me his pet—I looked away from my dazed reflection and grabbed a warm fac

Dante must have realized something was wrong, for he only nodded stiffly and rose, nimbly picking up a squealing Marcus from his lap and handing him over to Cara who looked undisturbed. She gave me a small wink as Dante walked towards me, her eyes implying what she couldn’t bear to say in front of a child.Without waiting for him to reach me I turned and strode out of the living room, up the steps, and into my study. As soon as Dante walked in and shut the door, I grabbed him by the collar slamming him roughly against it with a growl.“What were you doing?” I demanded, my body trembling with uncontrolled rage.Dante’s eyes wavered. But his voice remained firm as he shot back. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”“Oh?” I gripped his chin tighter, then moved my hand down to his throat. I could feel his Adam’s apple bob against my palm, and I acted, choking him with one hand. He struggled, a groan leaving his lips as I leaned in closer. “You knew I was watching, didn’t you? And
