Chapter 36

ADRIA

"All good things, I hope," I said with a self-deprecating smile.

"Of course." Her own smile was perfectly polite and completely cold. Her eyes swept over me, taking in every detail of my appearance, and I could see the exact moment she dismissed me as a threat. "Damien says you've been taking care of him while I was away in Paris."

Taking care of him. Like I was a housekeeper or a nurse, not his wife.

"I do my best," I said quietly.

"I'm sure you do." She turned back to Damien,

  • His Tamed Wife, The Wild Heiress   Chapter 248

Chapter 248DARRENI gave up on sleep at two in the morning.I had been lying on my back for three hours, staring at the ceiling of the guest room. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw something I did not want to see. A pipe. A boy on a concrete floor. A phone glowing in a dark car, and a woman trying to say a name that kept breaking in her mouth.I sat up. The room was cold. I pulled on a sweater and went out into the hall without shoes. The house was different at night. In the day it was Damien's house, bright and big and full of people who watched each other. At night it felt empty, like a stage after the play is over. The floors were cool under my feet. Moonlight came in through the tall windows in pale strips, and I walked through them one after another.I did not have a plan. I only wanted to move. I thought maybe if I walked long enough, my head would get tired before my body did.I went down the main stairs slowly, keeping to the edge where t

  • His Tamed Wife, The Wild Heiress   Chapter 247

Chapter 247MILAThis was correction. I said the words in my head, the same words I had said for weeks. *This is not cruelty. This is correction.* He had broken the rule. He had broken it again and again, in public, in front of cameras, in front of the whole world. He had brought a stranger into the family and put her name in the papers. He had let himself be seen. The council had already decided what came next. All I had done was ask that it be done properly, by people who knew how, before someone worse decided to do it in a cheaper way.I was saving him. That was the truth. If I had done nothing, they would have taken his company, his name, and his freedom, and left him a shell. I was giving him something back. A clean life. A good life. A life with a woman who had known him since they were young and who would never lie to him about who she was.*Me.* I would be there when he woke. I would be gentle. I would tell him everything he needed to know.I said al

  • His Tamed Wife, The Wild Heiress   Chapter 246

Chapter 246MILAI had told myself I would feel calm when I saw him.I had practiced it in the car. Hands folded, face still, breath slow. I had done the same thing before every council meeting for ten years. If I could sit in front of twelve old men and keep my voice level, I could look at one man through a piece of glass. The building looked like nothing from the road. A long, tired warehouse with a faded sign on the gate. Two of the guards nodded to me as I passed. Neither of them met my eyes. I liked that. It meant they knew who I was.A technician walked me down the corridor. His name was Hale. He was thin, careful, and he talked in a low voice, as if the walls might be listening. The floor was pale grey. The air was cold and smelled of cleaner and something under the cleaner that I did not want to name."He has been in the preparation phase for twelve days," Hale said. "The main protocol begins in the next few days. We are ahead of schedule."

  • His Tamed Wife, The Wild Heiress   Chapter 245

Chapter 245ELIJAHI read that line more slowly than the rest. The divorce had been real. Damien had filed it himself, quietly, in the weeks before the shooting. He had signed a settlement that made Adria wealthy and free. He had done it, I now believed, to protect her. It was a private document. Two lawyers had seen it. A few people close to the family knew. It had never appeared in a newspaper. Adria had not told anyone in the house. She could barely say the word.Whoever wrote this had read the papers. They knew the terms. They knew the amount. They knew that it had been signed before the shooting, and they wanted me to know that they knew. And they had put it right next to the address of the flat.I did not need help understanding that. The message said two things at once. *We know where you came from.* And: *We know exactly what you are to her.*I stood up. My chair scraped the floor, loud in the quiet house, and I stopped and

Chapter 244ELIJAHI do not trust results that come easy. When the last piece of data landed, I did not celebrate. I got up, made coffee, and let it go cold on the counter while I walked around the kitchen. Then I sat back down and checked all of it again from the start. It held. Two nights earlier I had eleven red dots on a map. Now I had three. One was a cold-storage building outside Kavala, in northern Greece. One sat on the edge of Verona. The last was a converted farm complex in Puglia, at the heel of Italy. All three belonged to shell companies. All three connected back to the Castellan family if you were patient enough to follow six layers of paperwork. I was.I took them one at a time.Kavala went first. The power draw was high and steady, which looked promising for about an hour. Then I found the tenant, a real olive oil exporter with real invoices, real trucks, and a real dispute with a real customs office. Cold rooms use a lot of power. That

  • His Tamed Wife, The Wild Heiress   Chapter 243

Chapter 243ADRIANThe punishment depended on who you were. If you came from a top family, one with power and money and a seat near the table, the council did not kill you. That would have been too messy. It wiped your memory. It took away whatever you had done wrong, and it built you a new past. You walked around alive, and you did not know what you had lost.If you came from a lower family, the ones the council saw as tools, it was simpler. The person who broke the rules was killed. Or they were framed for a crime and sent to prison for the rest of their life. Either way, they were gone, and nobody asked questions.Kieran's family was high enough for the first kind. That was the only luck he got. They called a meeting. They told the two of us what would happen. Damien was sixteen. I was fifteen. We were both told to be there, so we would learn.I remember what they told me to do. They said Kieran had to be broken first. Not killed. Broken. They said t
