Sophia's POV

“Sophia, sit.” My father muttered. I could smell the alcohol on his breath. A bad habit that became worse after mum died.

“Dad…what’s wrong?”

He didn’t say a word. He just carried on circling the living room like there was a fire somewhere. His bloodshot eyes darted out the windows every few seconds like he was searching for something no one else could see.

“Dad, you’re scaring me.”

“Sit. Now.” I flinched as I sat on the edge of the worn-out couch. He slammed his clenched fist into his open palm. Again, and again, and again.

“He’s coming for me.” His voice cracked. “I know he is.”

My stomach dropped. “Who’s coming for you?”

“I’ve done things, Sophia. Things I can’t take back.”

I got up slowly, careful not to startle him. “Dad, it’s okay. No one’s coming. Just breathe…”

“You need to leave. Right now. Take the car and go.” For a nanosecond, his eyes seemed clear, and I caught a glimpse of the man I once knew.

“I’m not leaving you.”

His face fell. “I can’t lose you, too.”

I wrapped my arms around his frail stature, “I’m right here, Dad. You’re not going to lose me.”

He trembled against me, a sob escaping his throat as tears rolled down my face.

I held him until the sound of tires screeching violently against our driveway tore us apart.

My father's eyes widened in utter terror. He lunged to the window, shutting the blinds with trembling hands.

“Hide now.”

“Dad,” I said slowly. “What’s going on?”

“He’s here.” His words barely sounded coherent. “God damn it, Sophia. Hide.”

The front door exploded louder than my father had. With one last desperate look at my father, I did as he asked.

I ran up the stairs as fast as my feet could carry me. I burst into my bedroom, shutting the door behind me as the adrenaline coursed through my veins.

I heard my father’s voice echo through “Please, I’m sorry, I’ll do whatever you want, just don’t…”

I heard a heavy thud and then a grunt.

I couldn’t just hide up here. Whoever those men were, they could hurt him, or worse.

My mind screamed at me to hide, but I was frozen in place. That was until I heard footsteps coming up the stairs.

In a panic, I threw myself to the ground, crawling beneath my bed. I tried to make myself as small as possible as the footsteps got closer and closer.

Until it stopped right at my bedroom door. The doorknob rattled till it was kicked open.

I flinched, I was terrified, but I willed myself to stay as still as possible.

My eyes followed the footsteps till I was face to face with the invader’s black boots. I closed my eyes, hoping he would go away.

Hoping this whole day would go away.

But he didn’t.

I felt a tight grip on my ankles, and suddenly I was dragged violently, my entire body sliding against the hard floor.

I screamed as loud as I could, and I kicked.

“Let me go," I yelled furiously, but he forced me to my feet and slammed me against the wall.

He held me in place with his strong grip, no matter how hard I fought to get away.

“You must be Sophia?” He asked comically with a sinister smirk on his face.

His dark eyes never left mine, and his voice was as deep as it was terrifyingly calm.

“Yeah,” I spat at him, “And who the hell are you?”

He let out a low chuckle, "Feisty, I like that.”

This had to be the man my father feared.

“Let go of me.”

He finally let go, only to corner me against the wall with his broad shoulders blocking my path.

His presence towered over me. There was something about the energy coming off him that set off my nerves, or maybe that was just the smell of his expensive cologne. His gaze softened for a second, his eyes tracing my face like he was taking a mental picture.

“Sophia Rossi…” My name rolled off his tongue as it belonged to him. “You look nothing like your father.”

“What do you want with us?” I demanded, “Whatever he owes you, he can’t pay it. He’s sick. He has nothing.”

There was a flicker of anger in his eyes, but the smirk on his face stayed. “Do you know who I am?”

I shook my head.

“Let’s fix that, shall we?” He stepped back and gestured toward the doorway with a mocking courtesy, “After you.”

I couldn’t run. Not with him right behind me as we walked down the stairs.

I finally made it to the bottom of the stairs, my eyes scanning the living room for my father.

Till my eyes landed on him. He was on his knees. His face covered in blood, with two men in black with guns on each side of him.

I ran to his side, my heart racing.

“Dad!” I rushed to him, grabbing his swollen face in my hand. “What is wrong with you?” I yelled at the man from my bedroom. He was clearly their leader.m. “He’s just an old man! Whatever he did, he doesn’t deserve this!”

His dark eyes stayed on me, his jaw clenched with every word.

“Are you sure about that?” His voice was dangerously low. “Stefan, why don’t you tell your daughter what you did to me?”

My father could barely look at me. He crouched over, sobbing hysterically.

“Dad?” I whispered.

The man paced around slowly. Then stopped. “Your father put two bullets in my father’s head, and dumped him in the river like he was nothing.”

I couldn’t breathe. “That’s…that’s not true.”

“That’s not possible,” I whispered, staring into the distance. “Dad?” I looked to my father in a panic, but he was a blubbering mess.

“Silly me,” He continued, “Where are my manners? My name is Nikolai Lev, and tonight,  I’m going to kill your father.”

“No!” I threw my arms around my father. “Please don’t do this.”

One of the guards grabbed me, while the other took my father. Placing him on his feet, while I kicked and screamed beside him.

“Please don’t do this,” I begged.

Nikolai pulled out his gun, pointing it right at my father. His eyes burned into mine.

“The least you could do is look at me, Stefan Rossi,” Nikolai said coldly.

Between his sobs, my father whispered: “I’m sorry.” Over and over.

“Look at me,” Nikolai yelled.

My father was shaken as he lifted his eyes slowly to Nikolai.

“Please don’t.” I cried.

I finally escaped from the guard’s grasp, throwing myself in front of my father and right into the line of fire.

“Please.” My voice trembled. “Take me instead.”

  • His To Have And To Loathe   Chapter Ninety-Three

Sophia’s POVI stared at Nikolai’s message for the fifth time that morning.‘Still okay for me to go with?’ I had agreed three days ago, and though I had overthought it for days, I knew I wanted him there. Yet he still didn't seem convinced. The old Nikolai wouldn't have cared what I wanted; he probably would have shown up without asking and ordered me into his car, and probably threatened the doctor just to top it all off. But this Nikolai? He was different, and that scared me, not in a bad way.It felt like I was getting to know him all over again, without all the baggage. ‘Yes, Niko. Just don't be late.’ I sent it, and he responded immediately.‘I'll be there on time.’I rolled my eyes at his overachieving response; of course he would be.***Things had been relatively quiet since the creepy baby rattle. Sure, Nikolai’s men stuck out like a sore thumb around the building, but I felt better knowing they were there, and knowing Nikolai was watching me.I walked into the clinic, an

Nikolai’s POVI looked up at Jack as we drove over to Sophia’s; he knew what was coming next.“Does she know?” He asked as he looked up at me, studying my every move since we both found out I was about to become a father.I stared out the window of the passenger seat, right beside Jack. “Does she know what?”“That you're taking her back to the mansion?”I shrugged. “She will.” I hadn't thought it all the way through. “I want you to put more guards on her. Four more outside her apartment building. Two inside, and the second we get her back home. Nobody leaves without my approval.”I could feel Jack’s eyes on me for a second before he turned his gaze back to the road.“Say it,” I ordered.“Nothing.” He shrugged.I looked at the road ahead, knowing Sophia wasn't going to like any of this. But I wasn't going to leave her in that apartment when Moretti was planning God knows what.“Nik, you might want to think about this a little more.”“I have thought about it.” I retorted. And it wasn't

  • His To Have And To Loathe   Chapter Ninety-One

Nikolai’s POVI curse, “Get out of there, Jack.” I said as I placed my hand on my gun and focused on the surroundings of one of Moretti’s warehouses.“I still have a couple of grounds to cover.” Jack’s voice echoed through my earpiece.“I told you to take more men with you. For fucks sake!”“Careful, Nikolai. You are starting to sound worried about me.” Jack joked. This wasn't the time to joke. Moretti and his men were going to be here in less than five minutes, according to our sources, and we weren't done booby-trapping the joint.“Get in and get out.” I said firmly, “That was your order.”“Slow your horses. Rolling out now.”The warehouse doors open and Jack runs out.“Go! Go! GO.” I bark.Ivan starts the car as soon as I get in, speeding towards Jack and the other men.“Whohoo!” Jack screams the moment we begin to make our great escape, “That was close.”I grunt to myself, “You almost got my men killed.”“Relax. We made it out before Moretti and his merry clowns got there.” He smi

Sophia’s POV“That’s it. I’m quitting work to be a trophy wife.” A frustrated Amaya slumps on the bed while I get ready for work in my apartment. She had stayed the night because, ‘she didn’t want me to be lonely’ but there was more to it that she wasn’t saying quite yet. I’m guessing her date last night didn’t go well, plus, like me, she had her day job to get to.“Trust me, being a trophy wife isn’t all that great.” I responded based on my fair share of experience as Nikolai’s pretend trophy wife, who still got cheated on.I felt a pang in my chest at the thought of that. Sure, the marriage was a sham, but the feelings between us weren't. At least that was what I thought, but boy did he prove me wrong.Amaya grumbled as she rolled in the bed, “I’m just so sick of bad dates.” She abruptly got on her feet, taking up space in front of the mirror, practically pushing me to the side, “on top of that, I still have to go to work and deal with obnoxious men who think they know better than I

  • His To Have And To Loathe   Chapter Eighty-Nine

Nikolai’s POVSophia was acting weirder than usual. Or at least she wasn't saying everything.Something about the way she placed her hand over her stomach sent signal waves through my brain. What exactly was she trying to protect? I watched as she drove away, leaving me in the dust at the parking lot of her new job. I racked my brain the whole car ride home, replaying her hand placements over and over again. Then there was the fainting, and then the way she protected herself when we thought someone had fired a gun at us.Fuck. Was she pregnant? I leaned back against the seat, dragging my hand down my face. There was no way she would have told me if she was.Was it even possible? I mean, yes, we had slept together more times than I could count, but we had also been careful for the most part. My mind drifted to the night I demanded an heir from Sophia. Back then, I had thought an heir would be a way to preserve my father’s legacy, but now, all I wanted was Sophia. The thought of her c

  • His To Have And To Loathe   Chapter Eighty-eight

Sophia’s POV“Sophia, what's wrong?” Nikolai asked with a burning urgency. He stood right in front of me, looking like he was two seconds away from calling an ambulance, and I went from shock to full-on smiling, and I couldn't stop.“Nothing,” I shrugged.“You're crying.” He pointed out.I didn't even realize that I was. “Am I?” My hands went up to my tear-stained cheeks.“Jesus Christ, Sophia.” He stopped closer, his eyes searching mine for some sort of clue. “Are you in pain? Did something happen?”“No, Niko, I'm fine.”Another tiny flutter moved through my stomach, and I smiled again. I had to be less obvious, so I didn't react this time; either that or I had to explain why I kept touching my belly.I fought even more tears from spilling; they were tears of joy because this was a beautiful moment, one I never would have seen coming, and it so happened that Nikolai was right here when it happened, even if he had no clue it was even happening.“Sophia.” He said softly, “Talk to me.”

Niko's POVI leaned back, taking all my plans in. Tonight was the night. It was a wonder how we managed to stay best friends a
