Chapter 3

Author: Frost Whiteleaf
Sophia froze for a moment before putting on a wounded expression.

"Of course you and Ivan are the ones who run this household. I'm just a guest," she cried.

"What kind of guest has this much say in everything? Do I need to ask for your permission every time I eat?" I demanded.

Upon hearing this, Ivan slammed his utensils down on the table.

"Enough!" he roared. "I know you're not in the best mood because of your pregnancy, but Sophia has been taking care of you for the longest time. She even prepares a separate meal for you. She's doing all of this for free, and you're still complaining about it?"

"For free?" I shot back. "The ingredients she uses for four dishes and a pot of soup cost 200 dollars. All of those ingredients were paid for with my money, Ivan."

Sophia immediately stepped in to de-escalate the situation.

"Alright, alright. Don't be upset, Lily. I'll keep the meals relatively simple from now on. I won't spend so much money on ingredients anymore," she said.

Ivan flashed me a disapproving look. He looked at me as though I were being petty and stingy.

I rubbed my temples. This wasn't about the money at all.

I took a deep breath and forced myself to calm down.

"I'm not concerned about the money, Sophia. How about this? I'll pay you for your time," I suggested. "From now on, I'll decide the meals that are served in my own home. Does that sound good to you?"

Sophia got to her feet and untied her apron. "I chose to take care of you because I know that being pregnant can be difficult, Lily. I'm not doing this for the money."

After a pause, she added, "If you think I'm not qualified enough, or that I'm not doing a good job, then I'll leave."

When Sophia tried to leave, Ivan quickly grabbed her arm. Then, he turned toward me and demanded, "Apologize to Sophia!"

"Ivan." My voice was exhausted. "Why don't you try my food yourself?"

He did as I asked and took a bite. Immediately after, his forehead knitted together.

"Why does it taste so bad?" he instantly blurted out.

When he glanced at Sophia, he hastily corrected himself.

"It's just… really bland."

Sophia lost her temper too. She tossed the apron aside.

"Pregnant women are not supposed to have greasy or heavy meals! Go take a look at what they offer at postnatal retreat centers. My cooking is no different from what they serve!" she yelled.

She went on, "I quit my job to take care of your wife, and this is how you treat me? I only became a nutritionist because Lily had gastritis! Don't you have a conscience?"

The room fell silent.

Sophie's eyes welled up with tears as she turned her face away from him. Ivan, on the other hand, stood there awkwardly and scrambled to apologize to her.

I sat off to the side. Somehow, I was made to feel like I was the one who was at fault.

Postpartum meals are bland because the mother is recovering from childbirth. I was not in postnatal care. So, why was I supposed to eat nothing but boiled vegetables from the moment I became pregnant?

Besides, what was so impressive about quitting a convenience-store job?

She was using my money to stuff herself with rich, indulgent meals. Meanwhile, everything that landed on my plate was tough, gamey, or boiled in plain water.

I was exhausted.

Ivan was still coaxing Sophia, but I couldn't really make out what he was saying anymore.

I didn't bother listening to their conversation. Instead, I took out my phone and rescheduled my flight to the earliest one available tomorrow.

Ivan really wanted to push through for dignity's sake and find something else to eat. However, he'd transferred my money away while I was pregnant. With a heavy heart, he asked hoarsely, "Lily, could I have a slice of bread?"I handed him a slice of packaged bread. His eyes lit up, but the next second, I said, "Open that for Benjy. He's playing a game right now."Ivan's heart ached. He was still hungry, yet I only had eyes for Benjy.Benjy wasn't holding back either. He was really playing a game on Ivan's phone.Ivan sighed. He'd put up with it. This was just karma, after all.The melon pressing against his stomach was causing him some dull pain. No, his stomach really did hurt. His butt clenched, and he rushed for the toilet. There had been laxatives in the noodles. He collapsed limply on the toilet.I stood in the doorway with my arms crossed.I said snarkily, "You've really been spoiled, to get diarrhoea just from eating noodles."Ivan was now aching all over. Benjy quickly got into character. He invited Ivan to sit on the couch and stuffed a melon under the latter's shirt."This is your "baby". Take good care of it," he instructed.Ivan nodded and cradled the melon as if he really were pregnant.Benjy then took Ivan's phone out of his pocket and confiscated it."Phones emit radiation that's harmful to the baby, so you shouldn't use one for now."I added, "That's right. Nothing's more important than our baby, so be good and live with it.""Live with it". What familiar words.Ivan smiled wryly. So, being told to "live with it" felt this stifling. Many different snacks lay on the coffee table, and among them was the chilli con carne Ivan had brought over just now. After couching by the doorway for an entire afternoon, Ivan's stomach had long since started growling. With thoughts of the treatment I'd suffered in mind, he tentatively picked out a slice of plain bread. He was just about to take a bite when Benjy slapped it out of his h

Sophia tried to hide the sticky note, but Ivan snatched it up."That report indicating my malnutrition is under my pillow. If you don't want our child to starve to death in the womb, leave me alone."Ivan was stunned. Then, his eyes bloodshot, he rushed into the bedroom like a madman.Every value listed on the report fell below the average range. The doctor had written a note that read, "If this nutritional deficiency persists, there will be a risk of miscarriage."Ivan looked at all the downward-pointing arrows glaring up at him from the report, then grabbed Sophia firmly by the collar."Didn't you say you were a professional? Why would Lily be malnourished? Answer me!"Sophia was so frightened she took on an unusually tearful tone. "No… it wasn't me who caused it."Ivan recalled how slender my shoulders had been when he hugged me. He remembered how he would scold me for being insensible when all I wanted was to buy a meal, and how he transferred my money away.Had I only le

When Ivan woke up, he instinctively tried to hug me only for his hands to grasp empty air.Overcome with inexplicable panic, he hurriedly got up to check the items in the bedroom. My pajamas, cosmetics, and suitcase were all accounted for. There didn't appear to be any clothes missing either. He sighed in relief. It seemed he'd been overthinking things. In the dining room, Sophia had prepared a separate portion for me as usual.Ivan looked at the three-person meal on the table and recalled his unanswered calls, irritation rising."I don't know where Lily's gone. She's not answering my calls," he stated.Sophia stopped chewing and said with a smile. "Don't worry. She told me that she was going out to buy a few things this morning, so she's probably just not used to the food at home."Ivan thought back to the takeout container in the trash can, feeling a mix of frustration and disappointment. "She just loves eating that sort of junk. Even though your cooking is great, she's still

The past few meals had been so unpleasant that I was practically starving. Hence, I decided to order takeout. I got myself some beef tacos, and I specifically instructed the restaurant to go easy on the oil and spices. My food arrived fairly quickly. Thankfully, Ivan and Sophia weren't home when the delivery arrived. The moment I caught myself feeling relieved, I let out a bitter, self-deprecating laugh. How pathetic. I couldn't believe that I had to sneak around just to eat a meal. The beef tacos were delicious, and a hundred times better than anything Sophia had made for me. Tears streamed down my face as I ate, but I wasn't sure why I was crying.…Later that afternoon, Ivan spotted the empty takeout container in the trash. "Why did you eat something like this again, Lily?" he asked disapprovingly. "Sophia would be so upset if she found out. I went through a lot of trouble to convince her to come back. How could you do this?""I don't care about any of that. Besides, t
