The dress was beautiful. It made her look feminine. Still, Sab isn’t used to wearing such and quickly took it off. She might wear it during formal celebrations.
In her room, she sat on her bed and closed her eyes. What just happened today?
She put one hand on her chest, just above her heart. The presence of the bond is there, she can’t have imagined it. This feeling is completely different and cannot be easily ignored. She had a hard time controlling her emotions early.
But why did he not react? He has turned eighteen months ago. He should have known then that she is his mate. He hasn’t said anything. He hasn’t acted differently around her. Even tonight, when she’s certain he’s her mate and it was his scent, he acted as if he feels nothing. When he touched her skin, he remained unbothered and simply concerned.
Why is everything different? He acted as if the bond doesn’t exist. As if he doesn’t feel it and he doesn’t know she is his mate.
Her inner wolf made her presence known. She assured Sabrione that she wasn’t wrong. That man is their mate.
She tried to sleep, but couldn’t. She was simply too restless. Their territory is fairly safe, given the number of warriors, pack members, that patrol the border during the night.
She got up and went out. There’s a lake nearby and it’s a favorite among the pack members. It has a certain charm to it. For Sab, it can calm her nerves no matter the situation. No matter how big a problem she’s facing is, the lake helps to clear her mind and properly think.
She doesn’t know if she should be happy or sad. She wanted to smile and laugh, but she also wanted to cry. She eventually ended up doing both. If anyone sees her, they would think she’s crazy. Even her wolf was not impressed.
After a while, she collected herself. Time to shift. This would be the first time and she’s a little nervous about it.
There are a few cottages near the lake and she went in one to remove her clothing and transform into her wolf. The process was painful the first time and it took some time. They said it’s all instinct but she remained worried. Her wolf assured her that she’s doing fine. She sniffed the air when she’s done, inspecting her front claws. She lowly growled before getting out of the cottage and prowling around the lake. There’s this urge to howl and she couldn’t help it. It sounded excited and powerful at first, but then, it turned into despair and immense sadness.
The following week, she kept her distance from Clyde. The urges are strong and whenever he’s near, she gets this overwhelming desire to go to him. She persisted, though, and controlled herself. No doubt she would only embarrass herself if he turns her down in front of many people. She saw him with his other friends and he’s the same as before.
Ice has been keeping an eye on her as they went to classes and trainings.
“Are you sure you’re okay?”
She was startled by his question, but she managed a smile, “Yeah, I’m fine.”
“Are you sad that you haven’t found your mate?” Ice squinted and saw her hesitation.
Sab deliberated for a couple of minutes before responding to him, “I… I found him.”
She decided to be honest with him. Ice saw her expression and knew it must not be good.
“What’s wrong? Who is it?”
But she shook her head. How could she tell him? He knew her crush on his twin. The situation seemed complicated to her.
“Just… a few things. Anyway, it’s time for training. Let’s go.” She evaded and he let her be. He knew she must have her reasons. He’s not one to push for answers. If she doesn’t want to tell him, he respects that.
They spent a couple of hours training and Sab has made a decision. She needs answers and there are only a few people who could give them to her. The elders. Their Alpha and Luna. She was hesitant to approach the latter as they’re her mate’s parents. It would feel weird.
After training, she told Ice she’s got something to ask the mentors and that he should go first. He didn’t insist on staying with her and let her do her own thing.
She’s a little timid. She’s fairly average and if it wasn’t for her friendship with Ice, she doubts people would even bother remembering her name. She’s not one to attract attention for herself. As she approached, an elder already noticed her presence.
“Is anything the matter?” The old man asked, facing her. His tone was gentle and he’s one of the mentors she liked best.
“Well, uhm… I have a few questions and I wonder if you could answer them for me?”
“Hmm, I’m having tea. Let’s sit first.” He walked towards a table with chairs around it. They have a lot of these outdoor dining areas scattered in the territory.
Sab went to sit in one as they waited. A young girl brought refreshments and the elder asked for another set of utensils. Tea was poured and the elder gestured for her to begin.
“Well, it’s about mates…” She sounded embarrassed.
“Ah, yes. You’ve had your birthday last week?”
Sab nodded.
“What is it you want to ask?”
“I’m just curious. There are two parties in a mate bond, right? And from what I learned, both of them would feel the bond when they come of age, if they’re near each other. But… has there been an instance where only one party feels the bond and the other does not?”
The elder eyed her quietly, before taking another sip of the tea. Slowly, he shook his head. “I’ve never heard of such a thing, but that’s a curious question. In all my years, it has always been two people finding each other. How did you come up with this scenario?”
Sab felt uncomfortable but she knew they would surely ask her this.
“I just thought of it. Since not everyone finds their mate within the pack and some choose their own mate instead, how are we to know that they’re not really for each other? What if the bond is just missing and they’re truly fated to be together? What if one of them actually feels the bond while the other doesn’t?”
“Hmm, curious indeed.” The man thought some more before shaking his head.
“I’m sorry. I could answer your answer hypothetically but I don’t think that’s what you need. In reality, I don’t think this situation has happened before, or if it has, no one made mention of it. No one ever said anything of the sort.”
Well, shit. No one ever said anything, Sab repeated that in her head. Yes, of course. She really wouldn’t say anything. How could she? She thought of doing so, but she knew it would be difficult to believe. She was already bullied before for being weak, she can’t give them a reason to persecute her more. She would be called a liar if she says anything she can’t prove was real. Her head began to ache, along with her heart. “You don’t look well. You’ve just finished training, you should rest.” “Hmm, thank you for your time. I’m sorry for bothering you.” Sab stood and bowed her head at the man. He smiled at her and nodded, dismissing her. The following weeks, she did this a few more times with the other elders. They all responded similarly. She hoped at least one of them would have something to say, but nope. They all haven’t witnessed or heard of such a thing before. A month later, she braced herself. She can only ask the Alpha and the Luna. They’re younger than the elders, but they
“Well, something like that. From whom did you hear it from?” She frowned, sure Ice wouldn’t have told anyone. Clyde shrugged, “Just the general conclusion, since you’re not with anyone after your birthday. It has been… what? A month?” “Yeah…” She replied weakly. But she did find him, only he seemed unable to “find” her. “Don’t be discouraged. We’ll eventually find our mates. You’re also joining the pack visits, right?” “Hmm…” Her mind is a mess already. She wanted to tell him, but she can’t. This conversation seemed wrong. She felt as if she was lying to him and that’s not good. “You’re here.” Ice arrived and greeted her. “Hello.” Just like Clyde, he chuckled upon noticing her outfit. “Damn, you a girl now? The dress suits you. You did something to your hair?” “I just tied it up as usual.” “You put something on your cheeks?” Sab couldn’t take it anymore. She puffed her cheeks as she squinted at him. “Oh, are you blushing?” He carried a box into a corner and went to poke her
Ice has the most excellent hearing among them, as a vampire. He actually heard how her heartbeat changed. Poor girl. She’s still affected by Clyde. He assumed she still likes him.“The other person may or may not believe him. So, how to do it?” Alice added.“Since it hasn’t happened before, it’s more likely that he won’t believe it.” Sab voiced out her fear.“Well, you’ve hit the nail on the head. That’s true.” Conrad didn’t mince his words. She’s right about it.There was silence in the room. Sab courageously peeked at Clyde to see his expression. He was looking down as he thought about it.“How to convince the other party when it hasn’t happened before?” Alice repeated the question for everyone.Ice was a simple guy. He just repeated his earlier statement. Then, added, “Even if he likes the other person, if he insists, it would only be seen with suspicion. Why are you adamant about it? Can’t you just let go? Why do you insist to be with that person? Even if you say it’s just because
“I doubt it. If she does feel a bond, won’t she have acted differently? Very few wolves can control themselves around their mate.”“There you go. Very few can control themselves. She may be part of that very few you just mentioned.” Ice was quick to shoot him down.Clyde frowned at him. He understands Ice is quite protective of Sab.“Hmm, it’s an intriguing situation but we still don’t know much. Your father and I will see if other packs have any information.” Alice decided to intervene before these two young men get into a fight.“I’ll be leaving first.” Ice got up and nodded at his parents.Clyde’s lip twitched as they watched him go. When he turned to look at his father, he saw his serious expression.“You’re quick to dismiss it as a hypothetical scenario. When you become an Alpha, you should keep an open mind. Just because it hasn’t happened before, that doesn’t rule out the possibility that it may actually happen. Anomalies happen from time to time. You can’t deal with it the way
Sab returned to her daily activities like nothing abnormal is going on. She studied. She trained. Ice continued to accompany her most of the time and she’s glad that he’s helping her take her mind off things. He used to tease her a lot about Clyde, but now… he rarely mentions his twin’s name. Whenever she sees her mate, her heart couldn’t help skipping a beat, but that was it. She would look elsewhere and try to ignore him and this bond only she feels. Others would come to speak with her from time to time, but those are short encounters. A short chat between acquaintances. She couldn’t exactly say that they are her friends. She’s on good terms with most pack members, but there are instances they would tease her. They would poke fun at her performance during trainings. She’s a little clumsy when she’s feeling conscious of other people’s stares. When she feels that they’re watching her, she tends to slip and stumble. She gets embarrassed but there’s nothing she can do about it. In a w
Back to the present day…Ice returned after sending Sab home. His family seemed to have started the discussion without him. Their father is doing his usual approach of laying out the facts, everything they know about the situation. Their mother is more inclined to believe Sab. Whereas Clyde is the opposite.“I believe her.” Ice added his two cents.Clyde rolled his eyes at him, “Of course, you do.”Ice glared, “I know Sab. She wouldn’t lie about something like this. Do you not remember her concerns back then? When she asked how is one supposed to convince the other when only one of them is feeling the bond? You believed she only provided a hypothetical scenario.”“Then, why didn’t she say it then? Why must she pretend it wasn’t her situation?”“Didn’t you listen to her explanation earlier? Even if she admitted it back then, you would still think she’s lying. What difference does it make? She only said it now because you were planning to mate with someone else. You’re the bastard here.
Sab was bothered by the way some people are eyeing her. She knew they’re judging her. It’s a good thing training was over for that day, so she quickly escaped and ran home. Her eyes heated up as she held the tears at bay. She can’t cry here. She won’t cry in front of others. She was glad when she found her mom wasn’t home, so she quickly hid in her room and finally cried. Their words aren’t pleasant. They’re really calling her a liar. They’re saying she’s too daring and ambitious to target the next alpha. Doesn’t she know her place? She chuckled, recalling she’d had the same thoughts before. Still, for others to question her character because of this… how did they even know? Where did they hear it from? Who told him? She gave in to the overwhelming feelings of embarrassment and regret. If she knew this would happen, she wouldn’t have told anyone. What hurts more is that she knew it could only come from him. Of the four people who witnessed her admission, he’s the most likely source. T
“Why… did you do that?” Conrad slowed after the first word and Clyde could tell he grudgingly omitted a curse word. Or maybe he just uttered it mentally. He looked down and took a deep breath, “It just happened. I realized my mistake afterwards. I wrongly assumed that the people I told would shut their mouths. By then, I don’t know how to contain it. I apologize.” His mother appeared at the Alpha’s side, “Dear, you’re apologizing to the wrong person. And it doesn’t stop at that. What do you plan on doing to correct this mistake? You can’t just say you don’t know. You started it, you should finish it.” Conrad grunted, “Him admitting his mistake is already a miracle. At least, you know you did wrong, but that’s the bare minimum. Think, boy. What will you do now?” Clyde inwardly sighed. His father never gave him direct answers. He’s always asked to think for himself. But this time, he really needed his help. Recently, he’d been taught how to use the pack link, but he hasn’t mastered i
