The moment Lorenzo left, Lilian sank back against the wall, her chest heaving. She pressed her hands to her face, trying to make sense of everything she had just heard. Fear and confusion twisted in her stomach.

Why do I have a psychopath for an uncle? she thought bitterly. Why is he doing this to my family?

The sound of footsteps made her look up. The door opened slowly, and Sophia entered, carrying a small tray. Lilian’s eyes widened. She tried to speak, to ask Sophia why she was here, but Sophia gently raised a hand to silence her.

“Shh,” Sophia said softly, placing the tray on the bed beside her. “Sit down. Don’t try to speak yet.”

Lilian hesitated, then lowered herself carefully onto the edge of the bed. Every nerve in her body was tense, her eyes darting between Sophia and the chains on her wrists.

Sophia took a deep breath and sat across from her. Her gaze was calm but heavy, as though she carried the weight of the world in her chest.

“Lilian,” Sophia began quietly, “you and I…

Sophia leaned closer to Lilian, her voice low but steady. “I have a plan,” she said. “I know Isabella cares about you too much. That’s why this can work.”Lilian’s eyes narrowed slightly. “What kind of plan?”Sophia nodded. “Listen carefully. I’ll have Lorenzo’s men take me out for shopping. I know it will be difficult to convince him, but I can do it. I’ve done it before when he wanted something. I just have to make it look natural.”Lilian’s lips pressed together. “And then?”Sophia’s eyes met hers firmly. “And then, when we get to the mall, I’ll use the excuse of trying on clothes to slip away. I’ll go straight to Alessandro’s house. He knows how much Isabella cares for you. He wouldn’t let you get hurt. He’ll come for you immediately.”Lilian’s brow furrowed. “Wouldn’t they look for you? And when they can’t find you… they’ll assume you ran away. Lorenzo might come after you. What then?”Sophia smiled faintly, though there was a shadow of seriousness in her eyes. “It’s fine, Lilian

Sophia sighed, her gaze fixed on Lilian. “I know… we have not been on good terms ever since you and Isabella came back from the orphanage,” she said quietly, her voice low but steady.Lilian’s expression was calm but alert. “I know,” she said simply. “I’ve felt it every time we were in the same room.”Sophia ran a hand through her hair, her expression heavy. “I didn’t like the fact that you returned. I didn’t want anything to spoil or take away the wealth I was enjoying, Lilian. I wanted everything to be mine. And when I saw you… and Isabella… I couldn’t help but feel anger.”Lilian’s jaw tightened. “Anger at me? I’ve never claimed Isabella’s fight as my own. I just… always spoke the truth.”“Yes,” Sophia admitted. “At you. At Isabella. I… I didn’t even like seeing her. Because she’s your dad’s brother’s child—the real heiress to the wealth Matteo took as his when her father died.”Lilian leaned back slightly, her eyes steady. “So that’s what fueled your dislike. That makes sense.”So

The room was silent except for the faint hum of the air conditioning. Sophia sat on the edge of the couch, her hands clasped together so tightly her knuckles turned white. The lights were dim, warm, almost too calm for the kind of man who occupied this house. Lorenzo leaned back in his chair, his phone in hand, scrolling lazily as if the world outside didn’t exist. A half-empty glass of whiskey sat beside him, catching the low light. Sophia finally spoke. “What do you want to do with Lilian?” Lorenzo looked up from his phone, his eyes glinting with amusement. “What do you think I want to do?” Sophia hesitated, studying his face. He looked relaxed — too relaxed — and that made her nervous. “Maybe you… want to take money from Matteo,” she said cautiously. Lorenzo chuckled, shaking his head slowly. “Do I look like a man who lacks money?” She swallowed and shook her head. “No.” “Good,” he said smoothly, swirling his drink. Then he smiled in a way that made her stomach turn. “I love

  • His Unwanted Witness    the suspect

Morning came, but there was no peace in the Romano mansion. The sun was up, yet the house still felt dark. Alessandro sat behind his desk in the study, the curtains half drawn. A cigarette burned slowly in the ashtray, untouched for minutes. The door opened quietly, and Lucas stepped in. His face said everything before he even spoke.“Boss,” he began, standing stiffly near the desk, “we still couldn’t track the van.”Alessandro lifted his head slowly. His eyes were sharp but tired. “What do you mean you couldn’t track it?”Lucas shifted uneasily. “We’ve been checking since the day they were taken. We searched every camera near the mall, every road that leads out of the city. We even checked private security feeds.” He hesitated before adding, “It’s like they vanished.”Alessandro frowned, sitting back in his chair. “Vanished? You’re saying there’s no trace at all?”Lucas nodded once. “No trace, boss. Nothing. Whoever planned it was careful. They knew where the blind spots were. They c
