“We need to start your father on dialysis. His kidney function is still declining,” the doctor tells me in the hall.

I nod, “Okay, when can he come home?”

The doctor shakes his head, “I’m not sure. The pneumonia is bad, one of the worst cases I’ve seen.”

“His platelets were normal, he didn’t have a fever, he said he was fine,” I explained to the doctor.

The doctor nods, “The autoimmune disorder your dad has primarily affects the kidneys. His platelets were in the 'low-normal' range. I didn’t realize he was sick either. We will keep him in the hospital and monitor him. It might be time to think about a care facility for him.”

I look at the doctor in disbelief, “I am taking care of him fine. He is fifty-two! He shouldn’t need a care facility.”

With a sympathetic look the doctor says, “Miss Davidson, your father needs medical professionals to take care of him. You’ve done a great job over the years, but I believe it is to the point that he is a risk to himself. You work and are trying to finish school. Asking you to be a full-time caretaker for your father is too much. Once he can go home, it will be you driving him three times a week to dialysis, and every other week to his chemo.”

Letting out a sigh, I ask, “How much will a care facility cost?”

“For a good one that he can stay onsite for all his treatments, you’re looking around eleven thousand a month. That is before your insurance. Barbra is a case manager here, she will get the details from your insurance.”

I thanked the doctor, then went to tell my dad I needed to leave for work. The drugs make him so sleepy that he doesn’t respond. Grabbing his hand, I squeeze it to let him know I’m close.

After leaving the hospital I walk to a coffee shop down the street. An elder gentleman forgot his wallet and can’t pay. The three people behind him are complaining. I quickly go pay for the man’s coffee and muffin. I see the man in the hospital lobby often, but we have never spoken. “Thank you, young lady,” The older man said with gratitude.

I shrug, “It’s no problem. I hope you find your wallet.”

The old man nods, “It’s with my wife. I left it in her room. She’s at the hospital up the road. She needed some quiet.” The man is likely in his late seventies. The hair he has left is white and grey.

I smile, “My dad is there too. I just left and came here for something to drink before going to work.”

“Where do you work?” the man asks.

“Glen and Associates Accounting,” I tell him.

“Are you an accountant?” he asks.

I shake my head, “Not yet. Since my dad is sick, I had to reduce the number of hours I can take at school. I’m only able to handle a class each semester. Right now, I just do bookkeeping for the firm.”

The old man smiles, “They are lucky to have a kind soul working there. I haven’t found many of them lately. Have a good day at work and next time, your coffee is on me.”

“Enjoy your day too… I am sorry, I didn’t get your name,” I tell him.

“My name is Benjamin, but you can call me, Ben.”

They barista calls my order, “Have a nice day, Ben. I will see you next time.” I quickly leave for work. I’m already late.

Once I arrive, I do my inventory checklist then take supplies around the cubical area. Once everyone is stocked with what they need, I check the offices. Next, I do my data entries. I send the expenditure report to my boss then work on random tasks until the end of the workday.

Going home, I stop back by the hospital. I ask the nurse about my dad and they inform me there are no changes. I sit with him for ten minutes until visiting hours end.

In the lobby I see the same elderly man from this morning with another man around the age of my father. His hair is medium brown with distinguishing grey hairs. This man is also in a suit while the older man is wearing jeans and a tucked short sleeved button up shirt.

The older man approaches me, “This is her, the one I told you about this morning.” Smiling the man says to me, “This is my son, Thomas.”

I smile, “Hello, Thomas. My name is Elanor, but I go by Ellie.”

Thomas holds out his hand for me to shake. After I take his offered hand, Thomas says, “It is a pleasure to meet you, Ellie. My father was very impressed by you this morning. I would like to pay you back.”

I shake my head, “No, don’t worry about it. I’ve forgotten my wallet a few times.”

“Please, I insist,” Thomas replies.

Ben interjects, “I can get her coffee tomorrow morning.”

Looking at my watch I notice how late it is getting. Since I don’t want to take the bus after dark, I tell the two men, “I’m sorry. I need to go. My bus will be here soon and if I miss this one I wont get home until after dark. I will see you both around. It was lovely meeting you, Thomas and seeing you again, Ben.” I quickly leave before they can stop me.

  • His Wife   Chapter 12

After class, I stop by my dad’s house to pick up a few more things. My driver, Paul, helps me load the car. We drive back to the apartment, and I continue to unpack. At around five, I begin to make dinner. Max walks in just as I am about to plate the food.“What is that?” he asks in a disgusted tone.“It’s chili,” I reply. “Since it was cold out today, I decided to make chili. Do you not like it?”Max shakes his head, “It smells awful.”“Would you like me to make you something different?” I ask.“No, the house already reeks. I’ll eat it.”I nod, “Okay, I put crackers and things on the table. Would you like me to eat with you?”Max shakes his head, “No, I prefer eating a lone.”“Alright, I will bring your food in just a moment to the dining room,” I tell him. Max just nods and leaves.I put his food and drink on the table. Max walks out of his room after changing and says, “My father asked to have dinner with us tomorrow. I guess he thought the lunches you packed for me were decent. Tr

  • His Wife   Chapter 11

I make different dips, put out chips, vegetables, and set out drinks for Maxwell’s friends. From the notes the previous chef left, about seven people come over to watch a game. I make some sliders and leave different condiments out for them to dress their burgers.Maxwell gets home and looks around, “I forgot to call you. We are going to watch the game over at Randy’s house. His wife has more experience hosting.” Maxwell looks at me with a disappointed look, “It would embarrass me if they saw how you dressed.”I smile, though his comment hurt, I don’t want him to know how much he is upsetting me. “Why don’t we go through my clothes, and you can take me shopping this weekend?”Max looks annoyed, “No, I will have one of my friends take you shopping. She is a model, so she has an understanding on fashion.”I nod, “Okay, but remember to let her know you actually want me to look good. I don’t care what I wear or how badly I’m dressed. If you don’t want to be humiliated by being affiliated

MaxwellAfter Ellie cleans the kitchen, she begins cooking. I hear her moving around, getting ingredients out, and going through cupboards, trying to find things.Ellie walks into the living room where I’m watching sports highlights. “I have your food ready, Maxwell,” she says softly.I nod and head into the dining room, where I find two plates of food. I pause, “Elanor, I want to take my food in the living room, alone.”I notice her look of confusion, then she nods and hands me the plate. “What would you like to drink?” she asks.“Get me a coffee and a water,” I reply. She nods and goes into the kitchen to fetch my drinks. I go back to sit in the living room to watch the rest of last night’s highlights. Ellie brings my drinks, then goes back into the kitchen. I sigh. I thought after last night, this girl would run for the hills, but she is still around.Once I am done eating, I leave my plate for Ellie to deal with and head to the gym to meet Taylor. As we work out, I explain, “We ne

  • His Wife   Chapter 9

I lay out the clothes Thomas brought for Maxwell, leaving some water and medicine to help with his hangover. Then, I go sit on the couch and read a book I had in the bag that Kendra brought me.It isn’t long before I hear Maxwell waking up. He leaves the bedroom and looks at me, “Did you get me breakfast?”I put down my book, “No, I wasn’t sure what time you would wake up, and I didn’t want it to get cold,” I explain in a soft voice.Maxwell looks irritated, “You’re going to have an excuse for everything, aren’t you?”I feel flustered, “I’m sorry. I just didn’t think-“Right, you didn’t think. Why am I not surprised?” he says in a condescending tone.“What would you like for breakfast? I will gladly go get you something.” I say in a soft voice.Maxwell just shakes his head, “Let’s go home. You can cook something there.” He pauses for a moment, then looks at me, “You can cook, right?”I nod, “Yeah, I know how to cook.”“Good, maybe you’re not completely useless,” he says.We leave soon

Kendra and I arrive at the park just as the photographer is finishing setting up, “Good, you are here. Where is the groom?” she asks in an English accent.“We had to take separate cars, but he is on his way,” I assure her.“Very good. We will start with you,” the photographer proclaims. After about twenty minutes, James and his family arrive. Thomas arrives ten minutes later.“Where is Maxwell?” Thomas asks.I shrug, “He told Kendra and me they would take the car behind us.”Thomas pulls out his phone and begins trying to call Max. As he is calling, we see Max and three of his friends approaching. Thomas hangs up the phone and rushes to his son. After what appears to be a heated discussion, Maxwell walks over towards the photographer and me, “I apologize, I was looking for you at the other end of the park.”The photographer nods, “We can get a few more shots, but we are almost running out of good lighting.” She has us pose in front of a fountain, “Hold hands and kiss. Stay in that pos

  • His Wife   Chapter 7

“Wow, Ellie, you look amazing. You could be on the cover of a magazine,” Kendra says.I stare at myself in the mirror. The dress is a cream satin trumpet-style dress with a sweetheart neckline. The sleeves drape off the shoulder. There isn’t much detail on the dress, but the dangly diamond earrings make up for the lack of drama in the dress. My hair is curled, and the front is twisted and tucked to keep it out of my face. My makeup is supposed to look natural, but I don’t have these red lips or flawless skin. Overall, I look very elegant.“Thomas said that there was someone here from a magazine. He reassured me there wouldn’t be an interview.” I tell her.Kendra then asks, “Are you nervous?” I nod, but don’t say anything. Thinking for a moment, Kendra says, “Only two years. If he is a jerk, you only need to deal with him for two years.“Thomas said this is what Max wants. It feels weird marrying a man I never met, but I think this is the right decision,” I explain.A knock at the door

  • His Wife   Chapter 6

“Why were you searching, 'Maxwell Sturgis' on the computer?” my best friend, Kendra, asks.“Oh yeah, I need to tell you something,” I say. Kendra turns to me with an apprehensive look. “Don’t judge me.”“When have I ever judged you?” she asks. I give her a look and she quickly responds, “Okay, except for the times you made questionable wardrobe choices.”“I’m marrying Maxwell in two weeks.”Kendra looks surprised, then hurt, “Let me get this straight, you’re marrying one of the city’s most eligible bachelors, and didn’t tell me?” I shake my head. Kendra looks annoyed. “Is it because you’ll have a rich husband that you will stop being friends with me?”“No, it isn’t anything like that,” I try to explain.“Okay, then explain. I would love to hear why my best friend decided not to tell me about getting married.” Kendra crosses her arms.I take a deep breath. “You remember me telling you about Ben?” Kendra nods, so I continue, “Maxwell is his grandson. I guess he is having a hard time wit

  • His Wife   Chapter 5

Ben and Thomas met in front of the cafeteria. Thomas is holding a folder and Ben seems his normal cheerful self. We get our food and sit at a table in the corner. We make small talk while we eat. Everything feels light until Ben says, “My grandson has been getting into trouble lately. We think it might be beneficial for him to have someone help him.”“Like a mentor?” I ask.“No, like a wife,” Ben says matter-of-factly.The look of shock and horror must be evident on my face, because Thomas is quick to intervene. “My son, Max has already agreed to the marriage. He believes this will give him a reason to stop going out to clubs.”I blink a few times, then ask, “Why me?”“Because you will be a good influence on him. You are capable of giving him a good tongue lashing and you know when he may need compassion,” Ben explains.Thomas then says, “I hired a private investigator to look into your background. I know you are currently without a job and you were denied unemployment. What I plan to

  • His Wife   Chapter 4

MaxwellI hear my father dealing with one of the guards. “Please tell the bar owners that I am willing to pay for the damages my son and his friend caused, as long as they don’t go to the media. The last time he did something like this, it was a nightmare.”“Are you sure you don’t want to leave them here for longer?” The guard asks.My dad laughs, “I think that is putting more of a headache on you.”“It’s no headache, they are just sitting in a cell. I think they both are sobering up. One of them got sick, I don’t know if it was your son or his friend.”I look over at Taylor, covered in his vomit. My head pounds as my hangover sets in. My father tells the guard, “Please make all the noise you can while you get them.”I groan as I know my father is going to make me as miserable as he can for the next several hours. The door bangs open. I kick Taylor and tell him to get up, that we are leaving. He stumbles to his feet. “Is your dad finally here?”“Yeah, let’s go,” I tell him.“Finally,
