Zaire’s POV

The door had barely clicked shut behind me before my phone buzzed again.

Celeste. FaceTiming.

I let it ring for a few seconds. I already knew what this was about. My family had known about the baby ever since the clinic called and turned my world sideways.

I sighed and answered.

“Don’t just stand there, talk to me,” Celeste said immediately. She was in her home office, oversized frames on, a massive coffee mug in hand. “Did you see it?”

I dropped my keys on the marble co

**Kyra The technician's smile was kind as she glanced at the two of us, still glued to that screen like it might vanish if we blinked. "I'm going to step out for a few minutes," she said, hand already on the door. "Take your time getting dressed. I'll be right outside when you're ready." The door clicked shut. Suddenly it was just me, Zaire, and the quiet hum of the machine. I let my hands settle on my stomach, trying to breathe it all in. My heart was doing this weird fluttering thing, half joy, half terror. Zaire turned to me. His face was blank for a second before it cracked into something soft. Overwhelmed. "A girl," he said again, like saying it out loud made it more real. I laughed, but it came out shaky. "A whole little girl." His thumb brushed under my eye, catching the tears I didn’t realize had fallen. "You okay?" I nodded, swallowing hard. "I don't think I've ever been happier... or more scared." He pulled his phone out, and I kne

**Zaire Morning came too fast. Kyra woke with her mouth already dry, the familiar discomfort of a full bladder pressing low in her abdomen. She'd stopped eating the night before like the nurse instructed, nothing by mouth, clear liquids only, and drink plenty of water. It made everything feel more serious somehow, like her body itself was preparing for something sacred. She lay still for a moment, breathing through the nerves. Today. I was awake beside her, sitting up slightly, scrolling through my phone with a furrowed brow. When I noticed her eyes open, I set it down immediately. "How you feeling?" I asked quietly. "Hungry. Nervous. Like I might pee on the ultrasound table," she said dryly. That earned a small smile from me, brief, but real. "They warned me about the bladder part when I looked it up." "You looked it up?" "About forty times," I admitted. Kyra pushed herself upright slowly, one hand bracing her stomach. "I need more water before we leave." I

  • His accidental surrogate    You are my priority

Zaire’s pov The days after I told Zaire about the ultrasound appointment settled into a different kind of rhythm. Everything was still calm. Still steady. But there was something underneath it now. Something neither of us talked about. Friday was coming. And with it, answers. Monday Around lunchtime, my phone buzzed with a text from Zaire. Appointment confirmed on my end. Cleared my day. I stared at the message for a moment. It shouldn’t have surprised me. He’d already told me he would be there. Still, seeing it written out did something to me. No meetings. No calls. No work emergencies. Just a cleared schedule for one appointment. For our baby. I typed back a simple response. Okay. Thanks. Nothing dramatic. Nothing emotional. But later that afternoon, I found myself opening the message again. And then again. For some reason, I liked knowing he’d already made room for it. Made room for us. Tuesday I spent most of the afternoon folding

Kyra** The next two weeks passed in a rhythm I never expected to fall into. Not exciting. Not dramatic. Just… steady. Every morning, I’d wake up, make breakfast, answer a few work emails if I felt up to it, and figure out what my body was willing to tolerate that day. Some days I had energy. Some days the baby seemed determined to remind me that growing a human was a full-time job. The house felt different now. Warmer. Lived in. There were little reminders everywhere that my life was changing. Prenatal vitamins on the kitchen counter. Baby articles open on my tablet. Tiny notes I’d leave myself so I wouldn’t forget questions for the doctor. I spent my days taking walks, doing light chores, resting when I needed to, and slowly preparing for a future that was getting closer every day. And somehow, without either of us planning it, Zaire became part of that routine. We talked every day. Not because we had some deep emotional conversation we needed to have. Not

  • His accidental surrogate    Back to business

Zaire** I walked toward my car with my hands tucked into my pockets, the morning sun warming my back. For a moment, I just stood there. The street was quiet. Peaceful. And my mind drifted back to the look on Kyra’s face before I left. Relaxed. Finally. It was probably the first time I’d seen her genuinely calm in weeks. I wasn’t worried about her exactly. Kyra was stronger than she gave herself credit for. But that didn’t stop me from carrying the weight anyway. The protective instinct was there whether I wanted it or not. I climbed into my car and started the engine. As I pulled away from the curb, my thoughts wandered. The insemination mix-up. Savannah. The court mess. Everything we’d been dragged through. None of it should have happened. Yet somehow, in the middle of all the chaos, Kyra and I had built something surprisingly steady. Something soft. Something real. The drive back was quiet. Just the hum of

  • His accidental surrogate    Goodbye part 2

Zaire’s pov I pulled into the small parking area outside Kyra’s building and shifted the car into park. The engine hummed low before settling into silence. For a second, neither of us moved. This place was familiar to her. Home. To me, it was just another reminder that she was stepping back into a life she’d been pulled away from. Kyra unbuckled slowly beside me. “Feels weird being back.” I glanced over at her and nodded. “I get that.” I pushed open my door and stepped out. “Come on. Let me help you.” By the time she made it around the car, I already had the trunk open. “I can carry something,” she said. I grabbed her duffel and the tote bag anyway. “Just take your purse.” She rolled her eyes a little but didn’t argue. Good. The hallway smelled exactly how apartment hallways always smelled—cleaning products, old carpet, somebody cooking breakfast too early in the morning. I walked beside her quietly until we reached her door. She stopped before put
