She declared war on the king. She never expected to win his heart. When Ashley Monroe moves to Ridgeview, she has one rule: keep her head down and survive her junior year. That plan dies the moment she witnesses Marcel Vance—the school's untouchable quarterback and reigning bad boy—humiliating a freshman in the hallway. Everyone else looks away. Ashley steps forward. It's the worst decision she's ever made. And the best. Marcel is furious. Intrigued. Undone. No one has ever challenged him, and certainly not a fiesty, curvy new girl with fire in her eyes and a mouth that won't quit. He tries to destroy her socially. She fights back harder. He tries to ignore her. He can't. Every glance becomes a battle. Every argument becomes foreplay. And the more Marcel tries to push Ashley away, the more he realizes she's the only person who's ever truly seen him—the broken boy beneath the crown. But Marcel has secrets. His father controls his future. His best friend, Liam, is falling for Ashley too. And a beautiful, vicious cheerleader named Tiffany has already staked her claim on him. As the war between Ashley and Marcel transforms into an undeniable, electric attraction, the stakes rise higher than either of them imagined. When Marcel is forced to choose between the life he was born into and the girl who makes him feel alive, he will have to destroy everything he's ever known. But will Ashley's love be enough to save him? Or will the king of Ridgeview High crush the only person who ever dared to love him? Some enemies are destined to become lovers. Some wars are worth losing everything for.

Chapter 1

The New Girl and the King

The first time I saw Marcel Vance, he was holding a freshman by the collar of his shirt, and I was the only one stupid enough to tell him to let go.

The air in Ridgeview High was thick with the scent of cheap perfume, floor wax, and the subtle, electric hum of social hierarchy. It was a different world from my old life in Phoenix, a life I’d left behind in a blur of packed boxes and my mom’s tearful apologies. Here, everyone seemed to know their place. Everyone except me.

My best friend, Jess, a whirlwind of fiery curls and infectious energy I’d met only a week ago, was my guide. “Okay, so, the food is toxic, the teachers are mostly ancient, and the social scene is a literal battlefield. See that?” she whispered, nodding towards the center of the crowded hallway.

My eyes followed her gaze. And that’s when the world seemed to slow down, the noise fading to a dull roar.

He was taller than anyone else, a dark monarch in a sea of mundane subjects. His hair was the color of a moonless night, falling messily over a forehead that was currently furrowed in cold displeasure. He wore a black leather jacket over a black henley, dark jeans that fit him perfectly, and an air of absolute, unshakeable authority. He was built like a Greek god, his shoulders broad and his frame lean with the coiled power of an athlete. This was Marcel Vance. The name had been whispered to me earlier, always with a mix of awe and warning. The school’s star quarterback. The undisputed king. The boy who broke hearts without even trying.

Right now, he was using that power to terrorize a scrawny freshman. Marcel had the kid by the collar of his shirt, his voice a low, dangerous rumble I couldn’t quite make out. The freshman was pale, his eyes wide with pure terror. A circle of students had formed, a silent, complicit audience. No one moved. No one spoke. It was a ritual, a public display of power, and Marcel was the high priest.

I felt a hot surge of indignation flood my veins. It was a familiar feeling, the same one that had gotten me detention more times than I could count back in Phoenix. It was a fiery, righteous anger that demanded action.

“Ashley, don’t,” Jess hissed, her hand grabbing my arm. “That’s Marcel. He’s… he’s a god here. You don’t mess with him.”

I gently pulled my arm free. “Watch me.”

I strode forward, my heart pounding a frantic rhythm against my ribs. The crowd parted for me, a mixture of curiosity and pity in their eyes. They saw a lamb walking willingly into a lion’s den.

I stopped a few feet from him. “Let him go,” I said, my voice surprisingly steady.

The hallway fell utterly silent. Marcel’s head turned slowly, his gaze landing on me. His eyes were a startling shade of stormy gray, and they were utterly devoid of emotion. They swept over me, from my worn-out sneakers to my face, and in that split second, I saw a flicker of something—not interest, but a mild, arrogant curiosity, like a scientist observing a particularly bold lab rat.

“And who the hell are you?” he asked, his voice a low, smooth baritone that sent an involuntary shiver down my spine.

“The person telling you to pick on someone your own size,” I shot back, my chin held high. I could feel the weight of a hundred stares, the air thick with suspense. “Or is that too much of a challenge for the all-mighty quarterback?”

A flicker of shock crossed his face, so fast I almost missed it. He was used to people cowering, to girls giggling, to guys looking at him with envy. He was not used to being challenged. He released the freshman, who stumbled back into the crowd, gasping for air.

Marcel took a step towards me, closing the distance. He was so tall I had to crane my neck to hold his gaze. The scent of him—something clean, like soap and cold air—filled my senses. He was trying to intimidate me, using his size and his presence. And for a moment, it worked. But I refused to back down. I could see the anger simmering in his gray eyes now, a storm brewing just beneath the surface.

“You’re new,” he stated, his voice dropping even lower, so only I could hear. “So you get a pass. This one time. But you should learn the rules, new girl. You don’t speak to me unless I speak to you first. And you definitely don’t get in my way.”

He leaned in closer, his lips almost brushing my ear. “Because the next time you do, you’ll regret it.”

With that, he turned and walked away, the crowd parting for him like the Red Sea. The tension shattered, replaced by the immediate buzz of hushed whispers. Jess rushed to my side, her face a mask of pale shock.

“Oh my god, you have a death wish,” she breathed.

But I barely heard her. My heart was still racing, a chaotic mix of fear and a strange, electric thrill I’d never felt before. I watched Marcel’s back as he disappeared around the corner, a dark, brooding figure. He had declared war. A silent, unspoken war between the two of us.

And as the bell rang, shrill and jarring, I had the sinking feeling that I had just made a very, very dangerous enemy. But I also had the faintest, most ridiculous suspicion that I might have just captured the attention of the one person in this school whose attention I should have avoided at all costs.
