Chapter 8

Author: Magnificence
After a moment of silence, Luther suddenly asked, "Can I ask why you two broke up?"

I crushed a dead leaf underfoot. "He fell in love with someone else. The details don't matter."

He looked at me, his Adam's apple bobbing. "Then what's your standard now when it comes to choosing someone?"

I was caught off guard and joked casually, "Tall, handsome, absolutely faithful, and preferably someone who can pull all-nighters in the lab with me."

He stopped walking and said seriously, "What about me? I meet all of those."

"Huh?" I blinked.

"I liked you back in college. I chose the same advisor as you, then followed you into the same institute. But Theodore was faster. Before I could gather my courage, you were already with him. Now that you're single, would you consider me?"

My ears burned as I stepped back nervously. "I'm not ready yet..."

He smiled. "That's okay. I can wait."

Theodore couldn't believe he had actually wavered just because Jessica resembled me. Just as he was about to delete her contact, his phone buzzed with a message from her."I had a great time today. Want to meet again?"His finger hovered over the screen for a long time. In the empty house, he felt he could no longer bear the absence of my presence. Finally, he replied, "Sure."They began meeting frequently—going to movies, trying trendy restaurants, and even visiting amusement parks.Jessica was lively and cheerful, able to temporarily make him forget his pain. Sometimes, he even had the illusion that he was back in those early days when we first started dating.Until one night, Jessica rose on tiptoe and leaned in for a kiss. In that instant, Theodore jerked away. His voice was hoarse as he mumbled, "I'm sorry. I'm not ready yet." Jessica looked embarrassed but still smiled. "It's okay."On the way home, the cold wind sobered him up. What was he doing? He was using someone

Under the sunset, Luther's outline was bathed in warm light. On impulse, I rose on tiptoe and quickly kissed his cheek. He froze, his ears turning bright red. "Come on!" I tugged him forward, laughing. "Yvette said dinner's getting cold!"He laced his fingers through mine, his laughter carried away by the wind. "Alright. Let's go home." This time, we were truly going home....Side story about Theodore Theodore stood in the airport terminal, his ears ringing. My figure disappeared beyond security, and my soft "goodbye" felt like countless sharp knives carving into his heart. He stumbled back to our marital home and found that it had been restored to its original state. There was new furniture, freshly painted walls, and even identical curtains. Yet, it felt empty. Something was missing. Suddenly, he ran through drawers, closets, under the bed, and even through the trash like a madman. His fingers searched through dust until he pulled out a charred corner of a photo.

Yvette and I ran wild on the black sand beaches, screamed at glaciers, and threw the ring Theodore had given me into a volcanic lake. She said the best cure for heartbreak was to see more of the world. She was right. In the face of the world's grandeur, all that pain suddenly felt insignificant. It turned out that without Theodore, sunrises were still spectacular, and the northern lights were still breathtaking. Letting go of someone didn't mean forgetting. It meant that when you remembered them, your heart stayed calm.As the plane descended, the clouds parted, and the city's outline gradually became clear. I whispered to the window, "Goodbye, Theodore."...After returning home, I immediately threw myself into the lab. My colleagues tactfully avoided mentioning the engagement and just quietly left hot coffee on my desk.I buried myself in data, pulled three all-nighters, and finally discovered an anomalous pattern that could push our entire project past its bottleneck. Irene sneered. "If Isabella knew her place, would Theo have gone looking elsewhere? Just think of both families' reputations and let this slide. I promise Theo will never do it again."I let out a cold laugh and cut off Irene's rambling. "Ten years ago, Theodore stood outside the girls' dorm for three solid months, bringing me breakfast every single day without fail. He swore he'd only marry me in this lifetime, and he was the one who waited outside my lab until dawn just to walk me home. "Now he cheats, and instead of teaching him shame, you blame me for not keeping my man? You taught him to lie and to dodge responsibility. Why didn't you teach him how to be a decent human being?" I continued, "By 10:00 am, I want to see your entire family publicly apologize in the group chats. Otherwise, I don't mind posting everything Theodore did online for everyone to see what kind of person this 'young and accomplished' lawyer really is."Otto Scott, Theodore's father, grabbed him and forci

Theodore frantically wiped the blood from his face and staggered to his feet.Yvette Lawson walked over in her heels, carrying a bridesmaid dress bag in her hand. "Bella, the makeup artist has been waiting for you forever..."The door lock clicked open, and she pushed inside only to freeze in place."What the hell happened?" She looked at the wreckage covering the floor and stepped right over Theodore's hand to get inside."What did this bastard do?"She suddenly stared at the broken high heel in my hand, noticing the blood staining the pointed toe. She gasped and whirled toward Theodore. "You cheated!" Theodore turned as white as a sheet. "How did you know…""It's written all over your face! I'm posting this in the group chats right now!" Yvette grabbed her phone and started taking pictures.Theodore lunged for her phone. "Don't! What happens between Bella and me is none of your business!" Yvette slapped him hard across the face. "None of my business? When you pursued B
