Scarlett’s POV

"Scarlett, come downstairs," my mum's voice jerks me, stopping me from finally crossing the borders into dreamland.

I stared at the wall clock. The shaky short hand was struggling to stay on 11, but I understand my clock, I know it's 11 already. I have refused to change it every time my mum tried, it was one of the last gifts I got from my dad before he passed two years ago.

I was tired. I worked four jobs daily and I survive mostly on water and cheap coffee most of the time, but I can't skip my only meal of the day no matter how tired I am.

I struggled out of bed, stared at the Ravenwood application portal one last time before going out. It was showing "under review", and I anticipated it to change to "Declined" cause that has been my fate for two years now.

A little part of me hoped to see the green "Accepted" tick. I walked to the dining room, and it hit me that the smell of beef tacos that has been bothering my nose wasn't my imagination. It wasn't cause I miss my dad.

"I know this was your idea," I said, looking directly at Evan.

"Okay, it was my idea, we've not had this since daddy passed," he replied.

"Shut up!" I yelled at him. "This could pay for your uniform if we add a few bucks to it, and now we are eating it."

"Mum, talk to her," he said, looking to my mum to save him.

"Scarlett," my mum called, stretching to hold my hands. I just stared at her, I didn't answer.

"Baby?" she called, and I eventually held her.

"We can have good meals once in a while, can't we?" she said.

"Not when we have debts to pay. We have other important needs too, Mom. I'm fine with eating macaroni every day, just until those people are off our necks."

"We can live too as we figure things out. Sit down and eat."

I sat but struggled to eat, I just couldn't take my mind off it.

My mum took a bite and offered to feed me.

"You will love it," she said. I opened my mouth to take it and honestly, it was good. Of course, my mother made it!

"You see," Evan said, and I rolled my eyes at him.

Just as we ate dinner, we heard a knock and Evan went to get the door.

It was Mr. Daniel.

Mr. Daniel was my father's friend. They both worked as armed men for a mafia, escorting and monitoring their supplies. His presence comes with mixed feelings because he was our link to the mafia gang my father was owing.

He had come in three days after my father was found dead and told us that some of the supplies in my father's care went missing and he had been paying for it before he passed, and we needed to finish up the payment. We didn't even get compensated for the fact that he lost his life on an assignment, we just have a debt to pay, coupled with the fact that we didn't know much about his work. He intentionally kept us out of it as much as he could.

"Daniel, so good to see you," my mum greeted.

"Yeah, how are you and the children? I came to the house this afternoon, there was no one."

"Hi Mr. Daniel," I greeted.

"Scarlett, how are you?"

"I'm okay."

He stayed a few moments and stood to go. I offered to see him off, and just as we stepped outside...

"Scarlett, how are you managing?" he asked, and I just smiled. I didn't respond cause if I did, I'll be honest and I don't want to.

"I see you've paid 40 percent of the debt."

"Yeah, please help us plead for more time, we would surely pay back in full."

"They are getting impatient, you know, and I have tried to calm them, but I don't know how long that would work for before it fails." He paused, and I just sighed.

"They are threatening to come take your brother to work until the money is complete."

"No, they can't do that, we will pay them."

"They are making an offer though."

"What offer? Anything at all, they should not come close to my mother and brother," I responded.

"They want you to carry out a task. They will even give you a scholarship to Ravenwood. Michael taught you a few skills, I guess you can manage."

I knew the sound of these people from my father's work side; they use the word "task" for something grievous.

"Task?" I repeated, and he nodded.

"And my father's debt would be cancelled?" He nodded again.

"And I'll be getting a scholarship to Ravenwood?" This time he just stared.

"And I'll be using the skills my father taught me and asked me to use only when I need to protect myself?"

"I know what it is..." he tried to say.

"No, you don't."

"Think about it, just one task and you are free. Think of it as a kind of sacrifice you have to make."

"My dad won't want me to think of a human's life as a sacrifice to break free from a challenge. If I keep doing that, how many more sacrifices like this would I have to make when life throws its jabs at me?" I paused to catch my breath cause I was feeling a lot of feelings I couldn't express. Anger, anxiety, pity—a whole lot flowed through me.

"Good night, Mr. Daniel," I said and turned to return inside. I held the door handle, took a deep breath, and adjusted my face before I went inside cause I don't want my mum to catch a hint of what just happened outside.

  • Hockey Captain's Ruin   Chapter 14:The Plus One

Scarlett's POVI didn't get a single message from Adrian until two days later.By the second afternoon, I was already starting to get worried, genuinely wondering if he had changed his mind or dropped the idea entirely. But my two-week deadline was already counting down. Every silent hour that passed was an hour wasted, pushing me closer to a deadline I couldn't afford to miss. Then, my phone buzzed with a message from his number.“Send a pretty picture of you.”I scoffed out loud at the screen. The arrogance of this guy was unreal. Rolling my eyes, I lazily scrolled through my gallery, picked a decent photo where I actually looked somewhat presentable, and sent it to him.Ten minutes passed without a reply. I sat on the edge of my bed, watching every minute tick by right before my eyes. Finally, a file arrived on my phone. It was a digital invitation card. “Ravenwood Athletics Annual Gala & Dinner.” The date on the invitation was three days from now.I immediately typed back: “What i

  • Hockey Captain's Ruin   Chapter 13: Silver lining

‎Scarlett's POV‎There was a lot of crucial information omitted from my target's profile. Who would have thought that a girl simply being seen around him would trigger a complete public disaster?‎‎And now, thanks to a second blog post, he actually thought I had set him up. His solution? He wanted us to play a couple.‎‎"I ...." I opened my mouth to protest before I could even form a proper defense in my head, but no words came out. The words died somewhere between my brain and my tongue, leaving only the dry taste of panic in my mouth. And then, right in the middle of my rising panic, it hit me.‎‎There was light at the end of every tunnel. The light at the end of this insane situation was that playing his girlfriend gave me direct, unquestioned access to my target. No more sneaking around perimeter fences. No more waiting for isolated moments.‎‎"Okay. I'll do it," I had accepted, swallowing my hesitation. The words scraped against my throat like sandpaper. He handed me his phone

  • Hockey Captain's Ruin   Chapter 12: Familiar Face

Blake's POVA girl walked in, completely interrupting our game.My thumbs paused on the controller, and my player on the screen immediately got checked into the boards by Marcus, but I barely noticed. I was too busy staring at the door. She looked familiar. There was something about the way she carried herself, something about her face that I recognized, but I just couldn't place her. I quickly tried to remember where I had seen her, maybe passing by on the quad, or at one of the recent team parties, but I came up completely empty. Then, Adrian spoke up. "You forget something?" he asked, sounding genuinely confused.I glanced at Adrian, surprised. First of all, he had actually paused the game, which he never did. But more importantly, I was surprised he knew her. Adrian was notorious for keeping his distance from the campus crowd. He would much rather push things to me or Marcus than deal with a girl directly. If a girl ever showed up at his door, he usually ignored it and told me to

  • Hockey Captain's Ruin   Chapter 11: Two Birds, One Stone

Adrian's POV‎Blake had called me late last night to ask where I was, but I kept the details brief. I just told him I had left the party early, and left it at that.‎‎After the girl walked out of my place this morning, I didn’t bother attending my early classes. Instead, I spent the morning bouncing between secure phone calls, giving directives to the soldiers overseeing our incoming shipments. Making sure the supplies crossed their respective checkpoints without raising red flags was my standard Monday morning routine. It was how I had operated since I first stepped foot at Ravenwood.‎‎Keeping the business running perfectly smooth was the only way to get my father off my back about my choice to attend college and play hockey. I had highly competent men on the ground, and they never gave me a reason to worry.‎‎That was my burden until I graduated, after which my father expected to hand the entire territory and its operations over to me. He wouldn’t stop talking about it, and the

  • Hockey Captain's Ruin   Chapter 10: Collateral Damage

Scarlett's POV "I'm not going to give in to them. That's not happening. I am going to class.""Lettie!" Mia called out. I ignored her and kept my pace brisk until she had to jog to catch up with me.We eventually parted ways; Mia headed toward her building, and I marched straight toward my lecture hall. The second I stepped through the double doors, every head in the room snapped toward me. I had anticipated the stares, so I kept my face entirely blank, walking down the aisle to find an empty seat. But just as I slid into a desk, a guy in the back row decided to read the blog headline out loud, his voice carrying perfectly over the pre-class chatter. The entire hall erupted in laughter."I didn't know the new scholarship girl was the hockey king's whore," a voice chimed in. It was Selena, the self-appointed celebrity of our class. She didn't even bother to look at me, keeping her eyes fixed on a compact mirror as she carefully touched up her lip gloss. "You slept your way to getting

  • Hockey Captain's Ruin   CHAPTER 9 : Unwanted Attention

Scarlett's POVThe sunlight dragged me slowly into consciousness, but it was the shrill buzzing of my phone that truly woke me. I patted the mattress blindly, my eyes squeezed shut as I burrowed my face into the pillow. My head throbbed with the sluggish, heavy ache of someone being pulled out of a drunken stupor. When I finally located the phone, it stopped ringing, only to start up again a second later. I groaned and pressed it to my ear."Lettie, where are you? I’ve been worried sick since last night!" Mia’s voice shrieked through the speaker.I opened my mouth to mumble that I was in my room, but my eyes finally focused. I sat up. A few feet away stood the broad, muscular back of a guy in a white t-shirt and grey sweatpants.I rubbed my eyes, praying it was a hallucination. It wasn't."Fuck. Where the fuck am I?" I murmured, the phone slipping slightly from my grip. Then, it hit me. I recognized the sleek, minimalist furniture. I was in the exact same bedroom I had sneaked into ju
