‎Scarlett's POV

‎I woke up on the morning of the last day of the two weeks with still no clear plan on how to carry out my task, or, let me say, with less zeal for taking his life.

‎Since the gala, Adrian had been changing my dressing almost every day, like it was his responsibility, at the dorm or, once, at his house. The school blog was writing crazy, unbelievable things about his constant visits, but either way it was favorable to his goal of keeping the swarm away. I doubted it was helping

  • Hockey Captain's Ruin   Chapter 46: A Door Held Open

‎Scarlett's POV‎‎I couldn't stop seeing his knuckles.‎‎I got through two lectures without hearing a word of either. Every time the professor turned to the board, I was back on the quad with Adrian's hand sliding into his pocket, and I let him walk away because he hadn't said no and he hadn't said yes.‎‎By evening I was sitting on my bed with my knees pulled up and my phone in my hand. Mia was out. The room was quiet enough that I could hear the radiator ticking.‎‎'He's an adult,' I told myself. 'He can look after himself.'‎‎I typed a message anyway.‎‎"Did you see a doctor?"‎‎I deleted it and typed it again, shorter, and sent it before I could argue myself out of it. Then I put the phone face down on the blanket and stared at the wall.‎‎It buzzed in under a minute.‎‎"No."‎‎I picked it up.‎‎"Adrian."‎‎"I can manage on my own."‎‎I read it twice. It was

  • Hockey Captain's Ruin   Chapter 45: Straight Spine

‎Scarlett's POV‎‎I had read the same paragraph four times and could not have told you what it said.‎‎I hadn't slept properly. After the café I had gone back to my room and lain awake thinking about how little I had found. So when I looked up from the book, it wasn't because I heard anything. It was because something in the quad had gone wrong, the way a room feels wrong when someone has moved one object.‎‎It was him, walking across the grass.‎‎He was doing it very well. Shoulders squared, jacket zipped to his chin, head high. Anyone else would have seen the captain of the hockey team on his way to class. But I know better and had learnt to watch how people move, and Adrian was moving like a man carrying something very full, trying not to spill it.‎‎He was favouring one leg. His right hand was pressed flat against his ribs, as if he didn't know it was there. And when he turned his head to avoid the sun, the whole neck turned with

  • Hockey Captain's Ruin   Chapter 44: Open Palms

‎Adrian's POV‎‎I didn't think. I swung.‎‎My fist caught the arm and knocked the hand off my collar, and I fell back against the tarmac with my head screaming. There were two of them, maybe three, in dark coats, standing over me. Not masked this time.‎‎"He's awake," one of them said.‎‎It was said low, like a report. I didn't know who it was meant for. I got up on one elbow and they didn't move to stop me. Instead, all three raised their hands, palms open, the way you do when you want someone to know you mean no harm.‎‎Then they turned and walked away. Not ran. Walked, fast, the way the two men in the hallway had walked away from me at the gala, and I couldn't understand why that made my stomach drop.‎‎A black SUV was parked on the verge a good way down the road. Tinted windows. The same one that had followed me and turned off. They got in, and it pulled away without a sound, and then the road was empty.‎‎I sta

  • Hockey Captain's Ruin   Chapter 43: Roadblock

Adrian's POVI walked back to my room and went straight to my bed, I know better that to over think what just happened. I woke up by seven and got ready to leave. My mum had done my smoothie and was waiting by the main door as I stepped out and approached the door she handed me the cup and I nodded her goodbye.I entered my car and started to drive back to campus.Three hours of sleep sat behind my eyes like sand. The road was empty at that hour, grey and flat, and the smoothie cup rode in its holder beside me. I had barely tasted it. My father's voice kept running in my head, staying in a place trying to learn what you should be here learning, and I turned the radio on to drown it out and then turned it off again.I was already about 45 mins into driving when I noticed a black tinted SUV tailing my car. I slowed down to see then I noticed they weren't my men as I had assume when I first saw them 15 mins ago. I drove on and they took a turn then I relaxed m

  • Hockey Captain's Ruin   Chapter 42: Family Dinner

‎Adrian's POV‎‎After practice I drove straight to the Whitlock mansion. It was a very long drive from campus but I needed to be there cause there was a dinner planned for tonight. ‎‎We do have the dinner once in a while trying to play normal family and everybody plays along.‎‎I got to the mansion and my mum was giving instructions to the maids on what to do around the dining.‎‎"Hey mom" I said and she immediately left what she was doing and pulled me in a hug. ‎‎"My son" she whispered. Then she started checking me out like she's looking for something. She always does that since I broke my finger when playing when I was 11 and didn't say anything for days until it my hand were swollen and she noticed it herself. I was admitted in the hospital for about two weeks and that matter didn't get out of hands was a narrow escape.‎‎Since then, Everytime I return from school or anywhere she always check. Even as I always assured

  • Hockey Captain's Ruin   Chapter 41 : Fishing For Answer

‎Scarlett's POV‎‎I had found a comfortable corner in the cafe to seat after ordering my usual. ‎‎I was really engrossed in what I was reading, humming subtly with the highlighter in my mouth when a familiar masculine scent brushed through my nose. I raised my head and it was Blake. I picked up my back from the opposite seat so he could seat. Maybe this was my avenue to ask him a few questions about Adrian cause my curiosity about him has grown higher over the last few days, I couldn't brush off what happened at the cinema and I just wanted to know who I was dealing with.‎I kept seeing it, the way his head had dropped, the way his hand had clamped onto his thigh, and how he had joked right after as if nothing had happened. He took the bullet to his arm. Nobody makes a joke like that unless they need someone else to look away. I had looked away, because it was what he needed and because I had a job to do, and the job did not include wanting to know why.‎He sat and after a few exc
