Chapter 2

Author: Mohini
Harry's POV

When I came out of the restroom, the two of them were nowhere to be seen.

A notification popped up on my phone. Steven had just posted a photo on social media. In it, Giselle was crouching beside him, gently rubbing his swollen foot.

She was such a germaphobe that she wouldn't even share a straw with me, yet she was willing to go that far for Steven.

So they had already left without me.

After hesitating for a long moment, I liked the post. Then I called my boss, Robert Garfield. "Mr. Garfield, I've made up my mind. I'll accept the overseas transfer."

He sounded surprised. "Didn't you say you couldn't bear to leave your fiancee? What made you change your mind all of a sudden?"

"I finally came to my senses," I replied. Accepting the transfer meant giving up on my relationship with Giselle.

I walked out of the attraction and took a cab back to the hotel alone.

I'd just finished showering when Giselle stormed into the room.

"First, you walked off by yourself, then you went and liked Steven's post just to get on my nerves. Did the cold freeze your brain?"

I met her gaze and saw the undisguised concern for Steven in her eyes.

I'd spent countless late nights planning this trip, working until my eyes were bloodshot. And this was what it had all come to.

As I sat there drying my hair, I smiled. "Sounds like he's your fiance, not me."

"You!" Giselle exploded and lunged toward me, but Steven quickly stepped in to calm her down.

"Giselle didn't mean it." He turned to her. "Come on, we're on vacation. Let's not ruin the mood. Help me rank up in the game."

Giselle's anger melted away. She playfully flicked him on the forehead. "You're terrible at that game. Just promise you won't drag me down tonight."

The two of them laughed and bickered as they headed into the room next door together. They acted as if they were the couple who belonged in the same room.

A moment later, Mr. Garfield messaged me to say my overseas transfer paperwork would be finalized the next day.

I thanked him, pulled the covers over my head, and fell asleep.

In the morning, I packed my luggage and went down to the car.

On the drive back, Steven sat in the passenger seat, bickering with Giselle as she drove, just like they always did.

Neither of them bothered to explain why they'd spent the night in the same room.

I was her fiance, yet I sat in the back seat, unable to get a word in. I'd lost count of how many times the two of them had acted like I wasn't even there.

I never imagined that the trip I'd spent more than six months planning would end like this.

Giselle dropped me off at home first. A few minutes later, she came in carrying a takeout order of cinnamon oatmeal from my favorite cafe.

But Steven was the one who loved cinnamon oatmeal. My usual order was a vanilla oat milk latte.

Giselle didn't notice her mistake and wrapped her arms around me from behind.

"Still jealous? Sorry, Steven and I stayed up too late playing games last night and just fell asleep. We didn't think anything of it. Besides, your buddy's a two-minute man. I wouldn't be interested in him."

I froze for a moment, then laughed. "And how exactly would you know that?"

Her hands stiffened around my waist. I pulled them away and turned around. Her expression darkened at once.

"Are you done yet?" Her voice grew sharp. "I bought you food to make it up to you, and I already apologized. What more do you want from me?"

Silence fell between us. The only sound was her heavy breathing.

A moment later, she spoke again, her voice icy.

"Your dad drove himself crazy with his paranoid suspicions. Are you going to follow in his footsteps? You don't have Steven's family background or upbringing. Can't you at least try to be more like him? You're disgusting!"

My eyes widened at her words. I stared at her as if she were a stranger.

My dad had once been committed to a psychiatric hospital after he became convinced my mom was cheating on him. Later, he slit his wrists and collapsed in a pool of blood.

His last words to me were, "Don't make the same mistake I did. Never ruin your life over a woman."

I'd promised him I wouldn't, and I intended to keep that promise.

I looked Giselle straight in the eye and smiled. "If Steven's so great, why don't you go be with him? We're over."

Harry's POVEverything around us seemed to go still for a moment. I ignored Giselle and walked away. She quietly followed behind me, just as she used to when she walked me home. But I no longer felt the excitement I once had. Some time later, we successfully wrapped up the new project. My coworkers kept pestering me to treat everyone to dinner, so we headed to a restaurant to celebrate. The private dining room was filled with lively chatter as everyone drank and toasted one another. Caught up in the mood, I had a few more drinks.Halfway through the meal, I excused myself to clear my head and went to the front desk to pay the bill.Just as I pulled out my wallet, a credit card was slid across the counter. I looked up to find Giselle."Use mine," she said.I insisted on paying with my own card. "No need."After I signed the receipt, Giselle grabbed my arm. "You used to let me pay all the time. Why not now? Are you really going to cut me out of your life completely?"The alcoho

Harry's POVWhen Giselle called me from a different number, I was at my desk, going through some paperwork."Harry, what the hell is this supposed to mean? You had Steven step in as the groom at our wedding?"I continued working on the documents while her shouting echoed through the speaker."Aren't you two so in love with each other? Since the venue and everything were already paid for, I figured I might as well let you two have it. Consider it a parting gift," I sneered, my voice completely flat. There was a long silence on the other end of the line. All I could hear was Giselle's angry, ragged breathing."Harry, are you ever going to drop this?" she snapped. "How many times do I have to explain it? There's nothing going on between Steven and me. We're just close friends. How long are you going to keep holding this against me?"I set down my pen and tried to stay calm. "I'm not holding anything against you. Giselle, we've already broken up. Don't get the wrong idea.""What?"

Third-Person POVOver the next week, Giselle kept checking her phone, waiting for a message from Harry.Steven moved in under the pretense of keeping her company. He slept in every day and constantly ordered her around."Giselle, can you pick up some brunch for me? I want that cinnamon oatmeal. Also, run me a bath. I want to soak for a while. Are you listening?"Giselle finally lost her temper. "Can't you do any of that yourself? I agreed to let you move in because you were supposed to keep me company while I waited for Harry, not act like you own the place!"Steven's expression crumpled. "I thought you were okay with it. I didn't know you'd get so upset."Giselle froze. The truth was, Steven had always been like this. In the past, she'd found his helplessness endearing and felt the urge to protect him. Harry, by contrast, had always been considerate and self-reliant. He looked after her so well.Without saying another word, she went to the cafe. "Hi, could I get a bowl of cinn

Third-Person POV"Harry!" Giselle shouted. The wedding suit jacket was still smoldering, sending up thick black smoke. The furniture nearby was charred, too. But there was no sign of Harry. She searched the condo over and over, then finally called him in desperation. But all she got in response was the same cold, automated message. "The number you have dialed is currently unavailable. Please try again later."She couldn't understand why Harry wasn't picking up or why he hadn't followed them out. A growing sense of unease settled over her. She was about to rush outside to look for him when she noticed the blood around the smoldering jacket. His personal things were scattered across the floor, too.Only then did she realize how badly he'd been injured in the fire. Her heart clenched. "Why didn't he say anything?"Her panic kept mounting, and she stumbled out of the condo.Steven walked up to her. "How's Harry? Is he still mad at us? I don't know what's gotten into him lately. H

Harry's POVSilence stretched between us for several seconds.A flicker of panic crossed Giselle's face. "Harry, don't get the wrong idea. Steven's place is too far from his workplace, so I bought him a condo closer to work."She said it as if there were nothing unusual about it. But half the money she'd used to buy that condo had come from my hard-earned savings!Trembling with anger, I shoved past her and stepped inside. What I saw sent a chill through my entire body. Everything was in pairs, and all of it had clearly been used. The place looked like the home of a couple who'd been living together for years. So all those nights she had claimed she was working late at the office, she'd actually been here with Steven.I looked up and saw him coming down the stairs, wearing my custom-made wedding suit. When he spotted me, a smug smile spread across his face. That suit meant everything to me. It was made from the silk and gemstones in my dad's wedding suit. Every time I tried it

Harry's POVGiselle froze for a moment, disbelief written all over her face. Then she let out a cold laugh."I had no idea you were into playing mind games now. Harry, you're not a teenager anymore, and we're getting married soon. Are you really going to keep acting like a child?"She paused, then added, "Steven is sensitive. You can say whatever you want to me, but leave him out of it. I'll pretend you never said that."I almost asked her why she was always so quick to defend Steven when I was her fiance. But I held my tongue.Thinking she'd smoothed things over, Giselle softened her tone a little. "I have some work to take care of at the office. Get some sleep."She didn't come home that night.Steven posted a video on his social media that was visible only to me.In the video, he showed off his toned back and muscular build, striking an almost suggestive pose. Then Giselle stepped into the frame."Like this." Her fingers lightly brushed against his skin as she adjusted his
