Chapter 4

Author: Much Better
Tina's voice brimmed with anticipation.

Still clutching the stack of document folders, Tina's assistant nodded. "I met the designer today, but she already had plans tonight. She agreed to have another meeting tomorrow."

The moment the assistant confirmed that she'd personally seen the elusive designer—and had a meeting set—Tina broke into a triumphant smile.

"That's perfect!"

She turned toward Samuel, her eyes glittering with pride.

"See, Samuel? I told you I could do it. I'm definitely going to get her to agree to the collaboration tomorrow!"

My other classmates immediately erupted in eager praise.

"It's just as expected that you're able to do what others can't, Ms. Upton!"

"How incredible! We'll be relying on your support in the future, Ms. Upton."

"Samuel is so lucky to find a partner like you who can be of such great help to him, Ms. Upton!"

Their brown-nosing immensely satisfied Tina's ego. She glanced at me, who was sitting quietly in the corner, before addressing her assistant again.

"By the way, Lucy, do we have any entry-level positions open at the company? Maybe in the janitorial department?"

She paused and cast another meaningful glance in my direction.

"Irene over there helped my boyfriend out a lot in the past. I heard she still hasn't been able to find herself a proper job. Since she and Samuel were classmates, I figured I'd help her find a steady job just to help her out a little."

The room fell silent for a moment before everyone burst out laughing and chimed in happily.

"Heavens, no, Ms. Upton! It's good to be kind, but you really shouldn't get mixed up with people like her, and that family of hers, too!"

"That's right. You probably didn't hear about it, but when she ran off without a word back then, her parents came to the school and created such a huge fuss! They caused such a scene, even wailing outside the principal's office, insisting that the school had sold their daughter off to human traffickers!

"Even the reporters got involved, you know. I can still recall what happened that day… It was a complete circus, and so very disgraceful, too."

"Exactly! She and her family are all the same. They're completely unreasonable! Your fashion brand is just getting started, Ms. Upton. This is a pivotal point in the company's growth. What if her parents barged into the company demanding that you hand her over? What would happen then?"

Upon hearing that, Tina put on an expression of alarm.

"Is that true? In that case, I'm terribly sorry, Irene. It's not that I don't want to help you. But my company is finding its footing.

"We don't have a firm foundation in the industry yet, so we can't afford any scandals. We can't possibly risk getting caught up in trouble from you and your family." After saying that, she purposely scooted closer to Samuel, as if being near me would somehow bring bad luck to her.

Samuel simply looked at me. This time, his lips parted slightly. It looked like he wanted to say something to me, but in the end, he suppressed the urge with a stormy look on his face.

Everyone else was looking at me as though they reveled to see me being humiliated. Their gazes were filled with condescension and scorn.

I couldn't understand why Tina was so eager to give me a job. Still, I remained calm and repeated the rejection I had given Greg earlier.

"No thanks. That won't be necessary. I have a job."

Sighing, Tina remarked, "You should really quit that job of yours. I know that being young and beautiful gives you an advantage, but… It's easy to catch some kind of disease if you stay in that line of work for too long, you know."

The crowd snorted derisively. Even Tina's assistant, Lucy Ziegler, laughed along. But when she spotted me, her expression stiffened. She dropped the Lumina project documents she was still holding, and they scattered all over the floor.

The room went silent.

Looking utterly displeased, Tina snapped, "What are you doing? Can't you even hold onto a bunch of documents?"

However, Lucy completely ignored Tina's rebukes. Pointing at me, she exclaimed in terror, "I-It's you, the designer, Ms. Stewart! W-What are you doing here?"

Samuel lifted his head, his vision blurred by the booze. He looked at Tina, whose carefully made-up face bore an expression of concern."It breaks your heart, huh?" he slurred, repeating her words as he stared fixedly at her. "Answer me this, Tina…"He leaned in closer to her, his breath reeking of alcohol as he asked clearly, "Do you also like me because of my money?"Tina froze. Her eyes flashed with panic, but she quickly composed herself again."Certainly not! How can you think that of me, Sammy? I like you for who you are! It has nothing to do with money."Desperate to prove her sincerity, she even reached out to take his hand, but he flung her off harshly."Not because of money, you say?" Samuel remarked with a sneer. "Tell me, then. Why have you come looking for me right when your company lost the chance to collaborate with Lumina and has run out of funding?"He paused. Tina's ashen face and her darting eyes were all the answer he needed."Get lost," he snarled while poi

Meanwhile, Samuel was frozen in shock. He stared at Tina in disbelief before turning to me. His eyes were filled with the pain of betrayal. The roses he'd carefully prepared slipped from his slackened grip. They fell to the floor, and the petals scattered everywhere."You…" Samuel choked as he questioned me, his voice filled with indignation. "Irene, did you really take 50 million dollars from my mother? Did you care for me and do all of that for me, all because of money?"He shoved past my parents, who were still screaming about their 50 million dollars, and staggered toward me. His reddened eyes were misty, and his voice cracked as he roared in despair, "Tell me the truth! "All of your concern, all of those notes you took, and all of the times you helped me… were they all lies? Was it all because of money? Answer me!"The hall fell into a tense silence. All eyes were fixed on me.I didn't explain myself. I didn't get angry. I didn't even feel a ripple of emotion and met Samue

I didn't turn back, nor did I hesitate. In fact, I didn't even bother to take Samuel's words to heart.…What happened after the class reunion was no surprise. Some "helpful" old classmate of mine informed my parents, ever the leeches, that I was back in the country and seemed to be doing pretty well for myself.True enough, a few days later, I found my parents standing outside my office building. Their attire clashed heavily with the upscale building behind them. Their greed was plastered all over their faces, too."Irene, you heartless brat! How can you forget about us, your parents, now that you've made it rich?""You ungrateful brat! We raised you all these years for nothing! You ran off abroad for years without sending a single penny home. Now that you're some hotshot designer, do you think you can just ditch us? Dream on!""Quick, everyone, look over here! Look at this ruthless woman! She's all decked out in jewelry, but she lets her parents starve!""How much do you earn

Janice's words were like poisoned darts that hit me right where it hurt the most. I took a sip of water and said, "No matter how wretched my family background is, it's a past that was never something I could choose. But my life is built on the path I carved out for myself."I took every step and earned every penny with a clear conscience and my head held high. So, I don't need any of you to worry about whether I can maintain my position." I set the glass down and stood up. This so-called class reunion reeked of hypocrisy, pretension, and malice. I couldn't be bothered to stick around any longer."Please excuse me. I've still got other matters to attend to, so I'm leaving now." I grabbed my jacket from the chair and walked out of the room."Wait! Irene!"A tall figure rushed up and blocked my path. I caught a familiar scent—it was Samuel. He seized my arm, pulling me toward the turn of the staircase, before staring fixedly at me."Why did you disappear without a word back then? W

It felt as though all of the air had been sucked out of the room. All of the cackles and taunts came to a stop as the gloating expressions froze on my classmates' faces.Even Tina's smug expression was now stiff."W-What did you say?" she exclaimed shrilly as she snapped her head toward Lucy. "Who are you calling the designer?"Lucy jolted in fear when she heard Tina's sharp questioning. All the color drained out of her face. She scrambled to pick up the scattered documents while repeatedly apologizing to me with fear in her voice."I'm so sorry, Ms. Stewart! I didn't know you'd be dining here today… I truly apologize for disturbing you. I'll gather the documents right away!""She's the designer?" Janice, the one who'd mocked me by alluding to the fact that I'd married an old man earlier, exclaimed, her eyes bulging out of her sockets. She looked completely dumbstruck as she repeated what Lucy said earlier."What kind of designer is she?"Pausing, Lucy lifted her head and looked
