Chapter 1

My name is Jamie Thrushwood. All I wanted was to join a horror game and win some prize money.

Instead, I accidentally clicked the wrong page, and I registered as an employee!

Luckily, the employee benefits were pretty decent, so I rolled with it and showed up for work anyway.

On my first day, I discovered that although the customers looked wildly unsettling, they were all unusually friendly and enthusiastic.

They told me the place had not been running in a long time and that they were really happy to finally see someone working here again.

They even helped me clean up the store and set up the shelves.

I spent three hours writing down everything they wanted, then another full day going out to restock.

On my third day, I carefully organized the merchandise and neatly lined everything up.

Then, I waited eagerly for my very first batch of customers.

What I did not expect was that more than a dozen players would find this place first.

They barged in holding all kinds of weapons, punched through my brand-new glass door, and stomped across the floor with blood-soaked boots, ruining the surface I just mopped.

Before I could even react, they rushed behind the counter and tied me up.

The leader planted his foot on my shoulder and laughed loudly.

"I knew it! This place is a safe house. All these supplies are ours now!"

The players behind him immediately started sucking up.

"Man, Mr. Crawford really knows his stuff!"

Another joined in. "No kidding. He camped here all day for this!"

Gavin Crawford sneered and kicked me in the stomach with disdain.

"I thought this was some new boss. Turns out, it's just a useless nobody."

Pain shot through me, and I curled up instinctively.

That only made the others' eyes light up with excitement.

"This is the weakest NPC I've ever seen," one exclaimed.

"Later, we should stab her a few extra times and upload it online!" another chimed in.

Gavin waved impatiently. "Do whatever you want, but grab the supplies first!"

I shook my head desperately, trying to stop them.

Those were the goods I stocked for the NPCs!

Every single item was something they begged me repeatedly to make sure I brought them in!

Gavin let out a mocking laugh. "Begging? That won't work. We kill players all the time. You think we'd spare a trash NPC like you?"

They began looting the place like there was no tomorrow.

Realizing they could not carry everything, they took half and smashed the rest.

An entire day of my work was trampled under their feet.

"Hey, this supermarket's got a solid selection."

"Whoa, there's even spicy fish jerky!"

A player ripped open the package and stuffed it straight into his mouth.

I'd already stopped struggling, watching them with a blank expression.

Wrong.

That was not fish jerky. It was spicy human jerky, ordered by the siren boss next door.

Another player said excitedly, "There are fruit roll-ups, too! Though the shape's kinda weird."

Of course, it was weird.

That was misfortune tongue roll-ups, specially ordered by the ghost bride.

"Yo, everyone, check this out! This shredded kelp goes perfectly with instant noodles!"

They ate greedily, shoving food into their mouths, tossing half of it away.

I watched coldly, then glanced up at the clock.

A strange metallic scent of blood began to fill the air.

The lights in the supermarket slowly dimmed.

The battle-hardened players all froze at the same time.

And then, the clock struck ominously.

Back then, she was dispatched to the outside world to expand new game instances. During that process, she met my father and fell in love with him.Not long after, she gave birth to me.She wanted me to experience the kind of normal life my father once had. So when I was six years old, she chose to enter a deep slumber.By doing so, she evaded the game company's tracking, delaying the anomaly's descent into this world.Unfortunately, a year ago, the game company found this world anyway and began preparing for the anomaly's arrival. The ventilator, in fact, was modified by my mother. It was a form of anesthetic. When the breathing tube was pulled out, she showed signs of awakening. The game company detected her presence and immediately initiated the descent."Speaking of which," Mom said, rubbing my head, "I woke up at just the right time. My little Jamie has grown into a boss, too."I stared blankly and pointed at myself. "Huh? Who? Me?"At that moment, Lady Overseer handed me

I jumped to my feet and rushed into the kitchen. I grabbed a cleaver and planted myself in front of the bedroom door. The people outside broke in.When the manager saw the knife in my hand, he smiled indifferently."Kid, why put yourself through this? You're going to die anyway. You might as well log into the game and let us kill you there. That way, the prize money goes to us, and you earn a little good karma. We'll even help take care of your mom afterward. How about that?"I clenched my teeth. "In your dreams! Just as you said, we're all going to die anyway. If you want to kill me, I'm taking at least one of you with me!"They clearly did not expect that kind of resolve. For a moment, none of them dared to step forward.Just then, the mechanical female voice echoed from the sky again."After a joint application by multiple bosses, the company has approved the anomaly's early arrival. Please get ready in three, two, one."The sky tore open. From the black slit in the sky, co

The very next second, there was a knock at the door.Outside came the smooth, coaxing voice of the property manager."Ms. Thrushwood? We've heard you got a pretty good ranking in the game. We just need to collect your player information, including the location of your spawn point. That way, we can team up in the game, win prize money together, and survive."I covered my mouth, doing everything I could to not make a sound. The property manager chuckled softly."Ms. Thrushwood, please don't pretend you're not home. We checked the security cameras before coming. After you brought your mother home yesterday, you haven't gone out once. "Isn't your mother sick? Please open the door. Our community has medical facilities. We can provide treatment for her. You really should trust us. After all, the anomaly is about to descend. We need to stand together!"I stayed silent, but that did not deter them. They started ramming the door.I pressed my back against it, looking at my unconscious

"I went into the game to work, okay? Gavin's prize money really didn't end up with me!"The front man snapped. "30,000 dollars? Who do you think you're fooling?"I begged them desperately, but they still refused to spare me.All three of them yanked out the breathing tube and unplugged the ventilator.I screamed and lunged forward, but they blocked me."That's what you get for lying to us!"I struggled with everything I had. Then, I saw my mom's eyelashes twitch. At the same time, the sky outside rapidly turned blood-red, and an eerie ticking sound echoed through the air.The three men froze and exchanged looks. One of them ran to the window and looked up at the sky.The next second, he collapsed to the floor, his eyes hollow as though his soul was ripped right out of him.Through the window’s reflection, I saw the sky’s transformation as well. The sun turned into the same clock as the one on the supermarket wall.A familiar mechanical female voice rang out."Countdown t

I nodded thoughtfully. In the days that followed, I kept restocking and running the store.Life settled back into a calm routine.Occasionally, players would pass by the supermarket—but the moment they saw me, they detoured around it.They didn't know exactly what happened inside.Gavin dominated the leaderboard for a long time. The fact that he and his entire team died here was proof enough of how terrifying this place was.No one dared to challenge it again.I finally breathed a sigh of relief. After all, my customers were far more polite than players ever were.If a customer accidentally dripped even a single drop of blood onto the floor, they immediately wiped it up and apologized to me.Whenever they asked me to restock items, their tone was always courteous.I did my best, within my ability, to find everything they wanted. Gradually, business got better and better.A few days later, I received a promotion notice.Strangely, the new position field was blacked out.I

I nodded and quickly pulled out two dice cups.Gavin immediately barked orders at the other players."Hurry up! Take out everything that boosts luck and stack it all on me! Now! Faster!"In no time, Gavin piled dozens of luck-enhancing items onto himself.Lady Overseer rested her chin in her hand. "You pick first."Gavin looked at the two dice cups in my hands.I shot him a look, subtly signaling him to choose the one in my left hand.He let out a cold laugh instead. "Nice try. You think you can trick me?"He snatched the dice cup from my right hand.Under the intense gaze of all the players, Gavin shook the cup, slammed it onto the table, and slowly lifted it."Triple sixes! It's triple sixes! I win!"Gavin shouted, so overwhelmed he actually burst into tears. The players hugged each other, celebrating their narrow escape from death.Lady Overseer, however, remained perfectly calm. "Hold on. I haven't opened mine yet."She gave her cup a casual shake and lifted it.In t
