The red wine spread through the fish tank like a cloud of blood.

My wife, Nora Ford, shot to her feet. "John, are you out of your mind?"

The arowana thrashed wildly in the water.

Her assistant, Caleb Jackson, flinched and stumbled backward, nearly dropping the cat in his arms.

"John, please don't do this. Ms. Ford bought the arowana especially for the new home. It's supposed to liven up the place."

I snorted. "Liven up the place? My mom is in the kitchen scrubbing your dishes, while you trampled my dad's thing like it's worthless. You're talking to me about livening up the place?"

Nora's face darkened. "Your mom offered to help. We didn't force her."

Mom came out of the kitchen, water still dripping from her sleeves. "It's okay, John. Today is supposed to be a happy day."

As she spoke, she instinctively took half a step back. That was when I noticed what she was wearing on her feet—a pair of disposable plastic slippers.

The soles were so thin they were practically touching the floor, and the heel had already split open. The new slippers I had bought her were nowhere to be seen.

"Mom, where are your slippers?"

She avoided my gaze.

"My dad's feet are swollen, so I let him wear the wool slippers you bought for your mom," Caleb said softly.

I turned to look. Caleb's father, Leonard Jackson, was sitting on the couch with his legs crossed. On his feet were the slippers I had bought for Mom.

Before Nora and I moved, I had specifically bought two pairs of slippers—one for Dad, one for Mom. I told them this was their home, too, and from then on, they would have their own soft slippers to wear.

Yet now, Mom was standing in the apartment she had helped pay for, wearing disposable plastic slippers, looking like a housekeeper who could be dismissed at any moment.

Nora frowned at me. "It's just a pair of slippers. Do you have to go this far?"

I looked at her. "Exactly. So why didn't you let Mr. Jackson wear the disposable ones?"

She was stumped.

Caleb looked incredibly wronged. "John, I swear I didn't know they were for Mrs. Shepherd. I'll return them right now."

He bent down to take off the slippers, moving so slowly one would think he was the victim here.

Leonard immediately stopped him. "I won't wear them, then. We're not so poor that we can't afford our own slippers."

He glanced at Mom. "Some people just aren't meant for nice things."

Mom's face went white. Dad finally piped up, "What are you insinuating here?"

His back was bad, so his voice wasn't loud, but I saw his tight grip around the wooden rocking horse.

Nora's expression was grim. "Look, Mr. Shepherd. Mr. Jackson is getting on in years. He's just blunt. Don't take it personally."

For four years of marriage, she had still addressed Dad that way.

I walked over and took the wooden rocking horse from him. The shoeprint on its back was deep. To me, it was no different than a slap on Dad's face.

I grew up in a low-income household. As a kid, I wanted to ride one of those carousel horses at the mall. Dad couldn't afford it, so he carved one out of wood for me instead.

This time, when we moved, he carved a smaller version for my future kid. He had said he wanted to place it in the living room.

"I might not have much to offer as a grandfather, but what I can do is use these hands of mine to make the best things I can for my family."

Yet Nora merely glanced at it, impatient. "It doesn't really suit our living room style. Caleb spent ages working with a designer to put this place together. It just ruins the whole look."

Caleb jumped in. "Don't get me wrong, John. Ms. Ford just thinks the natural wood makes the place look dated."

I looked around the living room. Everything—from the couch, curtains, sideboard to decorations—was in the minimalist style Caleb liked.

They replaced the solid-wood cabinet I had picked out and changed my beige curtains to white. They also swapped out my painting on the wall with a framed quote.

"Home Is Where He Is."

I asked Nora what that was supposed to mean, and she told me the designer had picked it at random. Now, I realized it hadn't been random at all.

Someone had already been quietly writing himself into this home.

The day I got my divorce certificate, the weather was beautiful. Mom carried an insulated food container filled with the pork-and-potato stew she had simmered that morning. She said we should have something warm to celebrate the ordeal finally being over. That way, we could put those cold, difficult days behind. When Nora came out of the courthouse, she stopped briefly. She handed me an envelope."This is the 30,000 dollars. I'll cover it for now. We can deal with Caleb's share once we recover the money from him."I didn't take it. "Transfer it to my lawyer's escrow account according to the agreement, please. Thanks."Her face turned a little pale. "I just wanted to give the money back to your parents in person.""There's no need. What they need is for you to stop disturbing them from now on."Internally, Nora fought with herself for a long time. In the end, she put the envelope away."I understand."The apartment sold without a hitch. After the mortgage and taxes were deducte

Sometime later, Nora finally agreed to the divorce, though she refused to sell the apartment."That was our home," she said. "I want to keep it."I read the message Nick forwarded to me and felt nothing. On mediation day, Nora came with her parents. She had lost a ton of weight and looked somewhat unkempt. When she saw me, her eyes lit up for a second, then quickly dimmed.Michael walked over to my parents first. "Mr. and Mrs. Shepherd, my deepest apologies."Dad gave him a polite nod. "I think we're way past apologies now."Michael's eyes reddened as he pushed a document across the table."The apartment will be sold. After the mortgage is paid off, your family will be reimbursed first for the money you put in and the renovation costs you lost."Nora will personally pay another 30,000 dollars in compensation. As for the same amount Caleb took, we'll take legal action to recover it."Nora's head snapped up. "Dad, do we have to sell the apartment?"Michael looked at her. "Why e

That night, Nick drafted the divorce agreement and the lawsuit documents.Everything was included—our respective contributions to the apartment, the mortgage payments made during the marriage, renovation expenses, the money transferred to Caleb, the mortgage application materials, the validity of the acknowledgment of debt, and the recording documenting the Jacksons' scheme."We can argue that the acknowledgement of debt was signed under a serious misunderstanding, or even fraud," Nick explained."The mortgage was never completed, but the application itself shows there was a risk of the other party transferring or disposing of marital property. I recommend applying for a preservation order on the assets."I looked at the wooden rocking horse on the table. "Proceed. I can't let my parents sell their house, just to end up losing their dignity."Nora refused to sign the divorce papers. Instead, she texted me every day."John, I've made sure the deed is in the right order.""I fired

The recording played, and Patricia's shrill voice came through."Look at his parents. They're so poor and pathetic. They put up a little money and suddenly think they own this place. Once we've got this place secured, have Nora sweet-talk John into giving up his share."His dad already signed the acknowledgement of debt anyway. Even if they make a fuss, it won't change anything."Then came Caleb's voice. "Keep your voice down, Mom. Once I actually get Ms. Ford pregnant, her family's money will be mine sooner or later."Mom covered her mouth.Dad kept his head bowed, his voice hoarse. "I didn't want you two fighting right after moving into your new home, but now I've thought it through. We don't want her in our family anymore."Tears spilled from my eyes. That night, I contacted a lawyer and sent over everything I had.The property registration, the mortgage notice, the bank statements, the acknowledgement of debt, screenshots from their social media, as well as Dad's recording.

The living room fell silent again."Did you promise him that?" I asked Nora, my voice hardly a whisper.Nora lowered her head. This time, she didn't even bother explaining herself.I smiled bitterly. She had promised to take care of my parents when they got old, promised that our new home would have a room for them, and promised that the first toast at our housewarming party would be to them.At the same time, she had also promised to help Caleb. Now, it seemed she hadn't kept a single one of those promises.I removed my wedding ring and placed it on top of the mortgage notice. "Weren't you going to give him a home? If so, pay for it with your life, not with my parents' blood, sweat, and tears."I helped Mom and Dad toward the door, but Nora chased after us. "John, don't do anything rash. We still don't know the whole story."I turned back and looked at her. "Everything that's happened today makes it clear where we stand in your life. Or does anything involving Caleb deserve a

The living room was so quiet that the only sound was the hum of the fish tank pump.Nora thought she had misheard. "What did you say?"My voice was steady. "I said I want a divorce."Caleb looked even more devastated. "John, please don't fight with Ms. Ford because of me. I'll leave right now. I promise I'll never come to your home again."Every word sounded like he was backing down, yet somehow, he still managed to make himself the center of everything.Sure enough, Nora turned to me with a disapproving look. "How did you turn into this?"I snorted."I came here today because there's something I need to deal with," Michael suddenly said. He pulled another set of documents from his bag and slammed them onto the coffee table. "Caleb, you told me you had a paternity test proving that Nora had a child through surrogacy using your sperm."Everyone froze.Nora whipped her head around. "I had a what?"Caleb was petrified.Michael gave a cold laugh. "You actually tried to fool me w
