I spent the next hour turning Jakob’s words over in my mind.

You’re not as fragile as you’re pretending.

He had said it like a warning and a challenge at the same time. Something sharp settled low in my stomach. He was already looking closer than I wanted him to. That meant I needed to move carefully—and faster.

I waited until the house settled into its afternoon quiet, then walked to his study and knocked once.

“Come in.”

Jakob sat behind a wide dark desk, sleeves still rolled, his green eyes lifting the moment I stepped inside. The room smelled like him—clean and expensive. Papers were stacked with military precision, and a single glass of water sat untouched near his right hand. Everything about the room said control.

I closed the door behind me and kept my expression soft. “I didn’t mean to interrupt.”

“You’re not.” He leaned back slightly. “What do you need?”

I stayed near the door for a moment before walking toward his desk.

“I don’t want to owe you anything,” I said. “You’ve already given me a place to stay. That’s more than enough.”

His eyes narrowed slightly. “And?”

“I want to work. At Prescott & Co. Even something small. I need to earn my keep.”

Jakob studied me for a long moment, his gaze sharp enough to make me feel as though he could see beneath every carefully chosen word.

“You understand what kind of company this is?”

“I understand it’s yours.”

A flicker of something—amusement, or maybe respect—crossed his expression and disappeared just as fast.

“It’s not a place for people who need hand-holding,” he said. “The work is demanding. The people are worse. Most of them will assume you’re only there because I allowed it.”

“Then I’ll prove them wrong.”

His gaze held mine.

“You think you’re ready?” He asked.

“I think I’d rather try than sit in this house doing nothing.”

He considered me for another moment. “All right,” he said finally. “You’ll start tomorrow. You’ll report to me directly until I decide otherwise.”

Relief and something sharper moved through my chest at the same time.

Legitimate access. A reason to be inside the machine instead of only living under its roof.

“Thank you,” I said, and meant the words more than he would ever know.

He gave a short nod. “Don’t thank me yet. If you can’t keep up, you’re out. No second chances.”

“I understand.” I turned toward the door.

“Rhea.”

I looked back.

“Don’t make me regret it.”

I gave him a small smile. “I won’t.”

I left the study with my pulse steady and my mind already turning. One step deeper. One more door unlocked.

I didn’t make it far down the hallway before Owen appeared from the opposite direction. He stopped when he saw me.

“Hey.”

“Hey.”

His eyes searched my face. “I heard you talking to my dad. You’re really going to work at Prescott & Co.?”

“Yes.” I hesitated. “Is that a problem?”

“No.” His answer came too quickly.

“I’m sorry if I crossed a boundary.”

“Rhea, no. You didn’t.”

He stepped closer. I didn’t move. The familiar scent of his cologne reached me, and something old twisted painfully beneath my ribs. I hated that my body still remembered him.

“I wanted to talk to you.” He swallowed. “I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

His jaw tightened. “For everything.”

I let out a light scoff. “You’ll have to be more specific.”

“You know what I mean.”

“No. I want to hear you say it.”

His eyes dropped. “I should have defended you.”

My chest tightened. “You knew what happened. You knew I needed you, and you said nothing.”

“I’m sorry Rhea.”

“That’s all you have? You’ve said that already.”

“I was a coward.” His voice was rough. “I chose my father’s approval over you,” he continued. “I chose the easier thing, and I’ve hated myself for it ever since.”

For one dangerous second, my anger slipped. Not because I believed he deserved forgiveness. Because I remembered the boy who used to make me laugh—the boy who knew every version of me before he became the man who stood there and said nothing.

I softened my expression.

“You hurt me, Owen, I don’t know if I can forget what happened.”

“You don’t have to.”

His voice cracked. “You can hit me. Do whatever to me. Just… don’t hate me.”

There it was. The opening. I could give him what he wanted. Not forgiveness—hope.

“I don’t hate you.”

The relief on his face was immediate, and it made me feel sick.

“Maybe we can stop being enemies.”

He reached for my hand. I let him take it.

“Does that mean there’s a chance?”

I gave him the smallest smile. “Maybe.”

That was all he needed. He stepped closer, hesitated, then touched my cheek. I didn’t pull away.

He finally kissed me, I allowed it. For a few seconds, I let him believe the past was finally loosening its grip. I even kissed him back. But beneath the softness, my mind remained painfully clear.

Let him believe you.

Let him think he’s getting you back.

People talk when they think they’re loved.

When I pulled away, he looked at me like he had been given something precious.

He looked at me, breathless and whispered, “I missed you.”

I forced a small smile. “I know.”

“I’ll make it up to you.”

I nodded. He walked away wearing a smile. I waited until his footsteps disappeared before my smile fell and I returned to my room.

The moment the door closed behind me, the smile fell from my face. I leaned against the door and shut my eyes.

I could still remember the warmth of his mouth. I hated that. I hated that some part of me had responded without needing to be told.

I walked to the mirror.

“Focus, Rhea.”

I stared at my reflection. This wasn’t about Owen. He was simply another door. And I had just convinced him to open it.

That thought steadied me. At least, it did until late that night.

A soft knock sounded against my bedroom door. I frowned, and opened it.

Jakob stood in the hallway, still in the black shirt from earlier, sleeves rolled to his forearms. His eyes moved over my face. He didn’t speak immediately. I wondered if he could see the uneasiness I hadn’t managed to hide completely.

Then he spoke, voice low and even.

“We start at eight tomorrow.”

I nodded. “Okay.”

“Don’t be late.” He held my gaze for another second. Then he turned and walked away. I watched him disappear down the hallway before closing the door.

I leaned against it, my heart slamming against my ribs.

He had seen something. I just didn’t know what. And that unsettled me more than I wanted to admit.

  • How To Wreck An Empire   Pressure

I spent the rest of the night thinking about the way he had stood that close. Not the warning. The distance. Or the lack of it. Jakob’s attention had changed shape. It no longer arrived only in the form of work. I had noticed the change during the week. It showed up in the way he paused when I entered a room, in the way his eyes tracked me during meetings, in the brief silences that stretched longer than they needed to. Nothing overt. Nothing I could name without sounding uncertain. But it was there, steady and deliberate.I told myself it was useful.I almost believed it._____Saturday morning the house felt too still.I came downstairs late on purpose. The kitchen smelled faintly of coffee and toast. Jakob was already gone. A single empty cup sat near the sink. Owen was at the island, scrolling through his phone. He looked up the moment he heard me.“You disappeared again yesterday,” he said.“Good morning to you too. I had work.”“You always have work.” He set the phone down and t

By Wednesday the office had settled into a new rhythm around me.Jakob no longer treated me like someone temporary. He didn’t announce the change. He simply began including me in shorter, sharper conversations that used to happen without me in the room. A question about a timeline. A quiet request for my read on a junior analyst’s proposal. A folder left on my desk with no instruction beyond the expectation that I would already understand what he wanted from it.I did the work cleanly. I kept my answers short. I did not reach for more than he offered. After the minor inconsistency he had noticed on Monday, I moved with greater care. No more adjustments inside the system for now. The first friction had been enough to draw his eye which meant that the system was not as blind as I needed it to be. Anything louder would be stupid. Instead I returned to the slower work—small, spaced purchases through the hidden account, each one modest enough to disappear into ordinary market movement. Ano

  • How To Wreck An Empire   First Move

Sunday morning arrived with a low, stubborn ache between my legs.I had slept badly. Every time I closed my eyes I felt the phantom pressure of Owen’s cock against my palm again—the heat of him, the way he had jerked under my hand, the rough sound he made when I stepped back and left him hard. My body had not finished with the memory. It kept returning it to me in flashes while I tried to work.I sat at the desk in my suite with Jakob’s acquisition files open and forced myself to focus. He wanted notes by evening. I gave him more than notes. I marked the soft assumptions, the numbers that leaned too hard on hope, the places where pressure could be applied later. When I finished, the summary was clean and sharp. I sent it.Then I opened the private window. The account sat behind enough distance that it would take time and intention to connect it to me. I moved a small amount—nothing that would draw attention—into a quiet position tied to one of the lesser-known subsidiaries under Presc

The car was quiet.I sat in the back seat with my bag on my lap and my hands folded over it, staring at the dark road without really seeing it. The driver didn’t speak. Neither did I. The only sound was the low hum of the engine and the occasional soft click of the indicator. My body still felt him.Not in a romantic way. Not in a soft, lingering way. It was physical and crude—the exact pressure of Owen’s cock against my palm, the way it had jumped when I stroked him, the rough sound he made when I told him we should take it slow. My fingers still remembered the thickness of him. My wrist still remembered the heat.I shifted in the seat.A part of my brain registered the slickness between my thighs, but I refused to look at it directly. I told myself it was nothing. A physical reaction. A leftover. Something that would fade by the time I reached the estate. It didn’t.By the time the car pulled through the gates and stopped in front of the house, the awareness had sharpened into somet

  • How To Wreck An Empire   The Apprentice

Friday morning I walked into Jakob’s office with the acquisition file under my arm and the week’s work already arranged in my head.He was on a call when I entered. He glanced up, ended it with two short words, and nodded at the chair across from his desk.“Impressions.”I sat, opened the folder, and gave them to him without polish. The second proposal was the weakest—over-reliant on a single market, debt structure that shifted risk onto the buyer, growth numbers that only worked if everything went perfectly. The third had cleaner bones but a leadership team that had already failed once in a similar space. I told him which one I would kill, which one I would watch, and which numbers I didn’t trust.Jakob listened in silence. When I finished he leaned back, fingers steepled, and studied me for a long moment.“You’ve been here five days.”“Yes.”“Most people take a month to see half of that.”I didn’t answer. He didn’t seem to need one. He closed the folder, set it aside, and pulled ano

  • How To Wreck An Empire   Inside The Machine

I was awake before the rest of the house, staring at the ceiling. For a few minutes I wondered if anyone had heard me last night. The thought kept me still longer than I wanted to admit. After Owen kissed me I had gone back to my room determined to shut the whole thing down. Instead I had spent hours replaying it—the heat of his hand at my waist, the way his lips had moved against mine, the soft, broken sound he made when I kissed him back. My body had remembered him too easily. It wanted more.I hated that.I had tried to ignore it at first. Then I gave up and reached for the small rose toy I kept in the bottom of my bag. The first orgasm had been quick and angry, hips lifting off the mattress while I bit the inside of my cheek to stay quiet. The second had been slower, meaner; I held the toy harder against my clit and let the images come—Owen’s mouth, the lust in his eyes, the weight of him, the way he had looked at me like he still thought he could have me. By the third time I was
