Chapter 3

Author: The Genesis
Lena did not bother going back to the Johnson estate. Instead, she drove straight to the small apartment she had purchased with her own money. By the time she threw herself onto the soft bed, the night was dark.

Since the afternoon, Henry had not contacted her to check in on her or explain himself. He had not even bothered to ask why she left. Lena stared at her phone screen for a long time, so long that her eyes began to water. Finally, she tossed the phone to the side, closed her eyes, and fell into a deep sleep.

The next morning, she was woken up by a barrage of loud noises from the living room. Walking out to investigate, she was shocked to see Henry supervising a group of movers carrying boxes into her apartment.

The moment he spotted her, Henry quickly strode over and grabbed her hands, looking guilty.

“Lenny, I’m so sorry about yesterday. Something urgent came up at the company, and I had to rush off before I could tell you. I only found out later that there was an earthquake in that area! You aren’t hurt, are you?”

Lena stared at the man lying right to her face without breaking a sweat. A sharp, stinging pain pricked at her heart. He knew perfectly well that he owed her an explanation. Yet, he chose to construct that elaborate lie just to cover up the fact that he had abandoned her at the scene.

She could not understand it. If he was already in love with someone else, why was he pushing to marry her? Was it because he thought she was an easy target to fool, or did he just thoroughly enjoy having a reliable fiancée at home while keeping a mistress on the side?

Seeing Lena remain silent, Henry let out a sigh. He reached up to ruffle her hair and said in a soothing, affectionate tone, “I know how much you love these, so I bought you a bunch of designer jewelry to make it up to you. Don’t be mad at me anymore, okay?”

Lena pursed her lips. Before she could even force the word “okay” out of her mouth, his phone suddenly blared with a loud, frantic ringtone. Henry answered it, and whatever the person on the other end said made his expression shift.

He looked back at Lena with a conflicted expression and said, “Lenny, there’s another emergency at the company. I can’t stay to hang out. I’ve got to run!”

He did not even wait for Lena to respond before turning on his heel and bolting out the door. The apartment fell into a dead silence, save for the remaining movers quietly shuffling back and forth with the boxes.

After what felt like an eternity, her phone chimed with a notification. Lena unlocked it and saw that Ava had just posted a new update on social media. The photo showcased a massive pile of expensive jewelry, and in the corner of the frame rested a man’s elegant hand, where a ring she knew all too well sat on his middle finger. Since the jewelry in the photo was the same collection Henry had just delivered to her apartment, and the ring was an identical match to the one currently sitting on Lena’s finger, the hand could only be Henry’s.

Lena felt a lump in her throat, and her heart felt as though it was being squeezed by a giant pair of hands, making it hard for her to breathe. It seemed a person’s love really could be divided into two; Henry’s devotion had never belonged to her alone.

“Miss Lena, we’ve laid out all the jewelry pieces right here. Please take a look.”

The voice of one of the workers snapped her back to reality.

Lena stared fixedly at the gems on the table. Suddenly, her lips curled into a bitter smirk as she looked up at the worker and said, “Sell them all. I don’t want a single piece left behind.”

If a gift was not meant exclusively for her, she did not want it.

The moment the jewelry was cleared out, Henry’s name flashed on her incoming calls. Lena immediately declined it, and when he called again, she declined it again. After a few relentless attempts, he finally stopped calling and sent a text instead.

[If you don’t like those styles, I’ll take you out to pick some out yourself another day!]

Lena glanced at the screen, left it be, and scrolled through her contacts until she found her long-time best friend’s name. She sent over a text to meet up. Since she was leaving the country so soon, she needed to say a proper goodbye to the people who actually mattered.

By evening, Lena had changed into a fresh outfit and headed to a local upscale bar. Her best friend, Sydney Green, was already waiting for her there. The second Sydney heard about Lena’s plan to move abroad, her jaw dropped in shock. Then, she immediately began grilling Lena about Henry.

After downing a few drinks, Lena kept her eyes lowered, her tone calm. “I gave up the engagement. I’m letting Ava have it.”

“Are you insane?”

Sydney bolted upright in her seat, her voice an octave higher. “That’s Henry Hale we’re talking about! He treats you–”

“How he treats me doesn’t matter anymore,” Lena interrupted, shaking her head lightly as her voice turned raspy. “And I’m not insane.”

The image of Henry holding that child with Ava leaning happily against his shoulder flashed in her mind again. It felt like a thorn, twisting deeper into her chest.

An unfaithful man was someone Lena had no use for.

Sydney opened her mouth to argue further, but Lena stood up. “I’m going to use the restroom.”

As she walked down the dimly lit hallway past a row of private rooms, a familiar male voice drifted out from one of the rooms. Lena’s footsteps halted. Peering through the cracked-open door, she froze.

There sat Henry in the center, his face partially obscured by the moody lighting, and sitting right beside him in a white dress was Ava.

“You guys…”Lena stared at the two people standing at the door. She was too astonished to speak.Sydney rushed forward, immediately grabbing Lena’s hand and pulling her toward the exit. “There’s no time to explain. Let’s get out of here first!”As Sydney dragged Lena forward, Lucas kept pace right beside them, effortlessly shoving away the maids who tried to swarm them.“What is going on? Sydney, how did you even end up here with him?” Lena asked as they ran.“The moment I got your SOS text, I sent people to investigate it. That’s how I found out Henry had kidnapped you onto this private island,” Sydney explained, her words flying out at lightning speed. “But I didn’t have enough manpower on short notice to guarantee a rescue right under Henry’s nose. And right around then, Lucas tracked me down. He said he knew you and wanted to team up.”She shot Lena a wink and teased, “Not bad, girl. Where on earth did you reel in a billionaire bachelor like this? He’s literally the heir to a

Henry’s face instantly drained of color. His lips trembled so hard that he could not form words.Looking at his pathetic state, Lena felt a twisted sense of satisfaction bubble up inside her, and she deliberately took her time to continue, “If you hadn’t shown up, I probably would have dated him, fallen in love, gotten married, and maybe by now… we would have had a beautiful child together–”“Stop it!” Henry roared, his eyes bloodshot. “Lenny, I’m begging you. Please don’t say another word!”“Heh,” Lena snorted. “You need to understand that from the exact moment you kidnapped me, brought me to this place, and forced me to marry you, the only thing I have left for you is pure hatred.”Henry could not take another second of it. He stumbled to his feet and fled the room in a blind panic once again.Lena watched as he left, the warmth in her eyes fading into ice. She had to find a way out of there as soon as possible. She absolutely could not allow herself to be at his mercy. The nex

“I am not marrying you!”Lena’s chest heaved with fury. The absolute absurdity of the situation made her blood boil.As if he had not heard a single word she said, Henry carried on casually. “I had a few more custom wedding dresses made for you. Let’s eat first, and then I’ll take you to try them on.”He reached out to grab her hand, but Lena slapped it away and bolted toward the front door, desperate to escape that place immediately. To her surprise, Henry did not even try to stop her. However, the moment she shoved the front door open, she understood why he was so confident.Outside, there were no city streets. Instead, a massive estate unfolded before her. A solitary villa stood squarely in the center of a manicured lawn. In the distance, people who looked like staff members were moving about, and the entire property was surrounded by a dense, endless forest that stretched as far as the eye could see.“Where are we?”Lena whipped around, glaring furiously at Henry as he stroll

Lena’s hand froze mid-air, her fingertips hovering just above the clay she was about to grab. She truly had not expected Lucas to lay his feelings bare out of nowhere, and a sudden wave of heat rushed to her ears, leaving them burning. As she turned her head, she found herself staring straight into those emerald-green eyes. She had always known how captivating his gaze could be when he was serious, but facing it up close made her heart skip a beat. After just a second, she hurriedly averted her gaze, her fingers nervously picking at the edge of the workbench.“Lucas… why do you have a crush on me?” Her eyelashes fluttered as she asked in a soft voice.Lucas tilted his head slightly. “Do I need a reason for that?”Lena bit her lip. “I… I might not be the person you think I am.”“I’ve never looked at you through a rose-colored lens,” Lucas said, leaning in a little closer, his tone turning earnest. “The Lena I see secretly passes out leftover bread to the homeless at the corner of t

Henry's face drained of color. He slumped onto the floor, looking utterly defeated, as he muttered repeatedly under his breath, “Lenny, you can’t do this to me…”The windchimes by the entrance jingled once more, and Lucas pushed the door open, holding a bag of freshly baked cookies in his hand.“Lena!”He called out enthusiastically, but his voice trailed off as his eyes locked onto Henry’s bloodshot gaze. The blonde man froze for a second, his brows knitting together. “Is he bothering you again? Do you want me to throw him out?”Lena glanced down at Henry, who was still paralyzed on the floor, and then looked over at Lucas by the door. She gave Lucas a small wave, gesturing for him to come over.Confused, Lucas walked over and came to a stop. Before he could ask anything, Lena stood up from her lounge chair, walked straight up to him, and then called out, “Henry!”Henry turned his head like a lifeless doll, his eyes hollow.Lena reached out and wrapped her arm around Lucas’s,

Henry returned to his hotel room, feeling completely hollowed out. He had caught the earliest flight possible to get there. The moment his feet touched the ground, he had rushed over to find her like a madman, without even pausing to take a breather. Now, every ounce of strength felt like it had been drained from his body. Even lifting his hand felt like a monumental effort. He had no idea how to make things right with Lena, but he knew with absolute certainty that he could not lose her.As he collapsed onto the bed, an overwhelming exhaustion washed over him, and a blur of fragmented visions flashed before his eyes. In a dazed state, he drifted off into a deep sleep. In his dream, he saw the past life Lena had spoken of. He was floating in mid-air like a detached bystander, watching another version of himself make completely foreign choices. At the wedding in that past life, Ava had similarly used suicide to threaten him. His expression back then had been even colder than it was t
