That was fine to throw in his face. He did reject the female after all. In fact, it became the thing he was known for. Many took on Zane’s challenge, trying to please him, but all would fail. They just weren’t what he was looking for. None of them were, and it ticked Zane off, apparently.
“How does that matter?” Derek forced out as the music’s pulse began to build up again.
Zane threw up his hand signaling for two drinks to be served and he was fixed with them immediately. The amber liquid shown in the soft golden hue of the bar soon drowned in the dark as if it were never there and the faintest glint off of the ice promised it was safe to think that he was in trouble. No one, not even Zane’s mother, got a drink so easily.
“It matters,” Zane replied evenly, as if he should already know.
“How?”
“It says plenty about our pack that you won’t take a she-wolf,” Zane cleared his throat in a disapproving way.
“It isn’t up to anyone else who I take,” Derek pointed out as he received his drink.
“I agree,” the other man assured him. “But it looks bad for me when you reject females I line you up with."
“I doubt that.”
“It does though. My time as Alpha of myself is one thing. Being Alpha of the pack brings on an entirely new list of responsibilities.”
“I guarantee getting me mated is not one of them,” Derek replied as he brought the glass to his lips.
“It’s not about who you lay, Derek. It’s about being overridden. It tells everyone else here that I’m not the Alpha in charge.”
Derek sipped his drink, pulling in the rich flavor, allowing it to burn his tongue to subdue the answer that threatened to escape him. As it slid down his throat Derek found a better return.
“You’re out of line, you know,” he replied.
Zane quirked his brow at the response. No one told him he was out of line it seemed.
“You feel it because you’re an Alpha, Zane. Don’t make it about everyone else,” Derek paused, waiting for Zane’s response.
The best the other man could muster was a cold, hard look from his dark grey eyes. While they were focused, they also seemed distant with his reply.
“You still don’t get it, do you?” Zane grumbled. “I can’t be seen as the Alpha if my Beta can’t get his head on straight!” he glowered at Derek then. “These people only know me for what I’m supposed to be after I’ve cared for all of my pack. I can’t take a mate or even start my hunt until yours is over.”
Derek downed the rest of his drink in one painful gulp before delivering his own devastating reply.
“You’re going to have to go on without me then,” Derek answered as he forced himself not to cough.
“What?” Zane asked incredulously. “Pack mates stay together. We’re family! Deeper than whatever’s going on around us.”
“If that was the case, why would it matter who I took to bed?”
“The pack has to remain strong…”
“It won’t be with a weak female determined to be good for you. Don’t you get it Zane? These women don’t want me because of what I look like. They want you and will play along for the opportunity to fuck you instead.”
What Derek wished he could stop still rolled off of his tongue anyway.
“I don’t share, Zane. What might be fine for you, isn’t for me…”
“… And you’re willing to leave because I’ve offered a soft body to fuck? Is that it? You need more than that?”
“Yes,” Derek replied evenly. “You can’t provide that for me. The longer you tell yourself you can, the more you’ll push me out,” Derek said, leaving his emptied glass on the counter behind them. “It’s not like it’s the first time for that either.”
He’s not given the silence to think about their past even though he can feel the tug that would eventually pull him down into his memories. Truly he wanted to remember the freedom it gave him and the moments with his friend but even those were painful.
“Wow, D… that’s low, even for you.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“You know exactly what. This lone wolf thing you’re trying for…”
“Don’t, Zane. Just…”
“Just what? Let my brother beat himself up for what he isn’t? To let him go his own way? You don’t think that you’re not hurting us by doing it?”
Derek could only shake his head in response.
“You’re not leaving,” Zane continued. “There’s no pack house to go back to for a few weeks. Nigel has earned that right by pleasing his mate, and you’re needed here to fulfill your role as a Beta to the rest of the pack while we’re out in the open.”
That asshole, Derek sneered at Zane. He knew that he’d use some bullshit to keep his Beta grounded. The truth was that while he was older, there were still younger packmates to look after, which included the mutt that was flat out banging the dancer on the couch in front of them.
“So long as they keep their wolves hidden, I’ll know you’ve earned your keep.”
It seemed so simple. Walking out would change things again, and Derek wanted it more than responsibility to the pack. Being their bodyguard had its perks but still freedom from it called.
Zane’s message left a lasting impression on him, long enough to watch the Alpha be pulled away by slender figures, urging him to dance. He scoffed at the scene unfolding between them and could only apply Zane’s input as exactly that. It was a quiet threat but even then, it was directed at him with guilt. The younger boys that were with them had been out before but not like this. This was the best they’d get until they were out on the prowl for their own mates. Unlike himself, Zane and the rest had less control over themselves and their actions.
Derek grimaced as he turned away from Zane to look down at Maleki who was ten seconds from howling in ecstasy. If he did, the dancer would be his for life, human or not. And while the wolf’s choices shouldn’t matter to Derek, per se, he knew what it was like. His love didn’t know what she was saying, or how she was locked to his heart, but still she howled with him. Aislyn…“Aislyn…” he heard her name the same time it rang through his thoughts. That wasn’t real. He couldn’t have heard that, he told himself.Despite how he wanted to tell Maleki not to howl when he came, the opportunity slipped away from him. Derek turned to follow the continuance of the nearly one sided conversation between some woman and someone,
Aislyn’s words sang to them all about how they were her individual saviors, keeping their focus up at the ceiling until the light stopped racing up to her platform. The cloth that was there, quickly released into a ring of fire, disorienting them further.Still, Derek kept his eyes on Aislyn. He knew her style was less about theatrics and more about how she felt. All he needed to see was the lift of her palm to know for sure.Just as she did, Derek lost his breath. She used to do that and claim she was feeling for him. His aura was something she could reach for regardless of being a human, and she wanted him around. Granted, he never showed her his human form, Derek reminded himself and fear set in. She wouldn’t know him if he approached her. It
It was a hard concept to take in, however. The woman he loved still didn’t know him the way she remembered her. But instead of escalating their argument, Derek listened to his instincts.“This pack isn’t mine,” he grumbled low enough for only Zane to hear him. “I don’t want it the way you want to control it.”Derek released Zane’s injury, easily, without the intent to hurt him anymore. Regardless of his act of mercy, the Alpha had the audacity to stare Derek down.“You’ll leave her alone,” he delivered to his brother. “Even if she comes to you for any reason. She doesn’t exist to you. None of them do.”Zane grumbled
Claiming she was his partner made more sense than to claim what she really was to someone Aislyn worked with. Derek remembered the shorter woman that brushed him off earlier. It wouldn’t have worked. He couldn’t help how he felt like he was beginning to come apart at the seams the longer the man waited to respond. A small receiver in his ear chirped, and the man, shrouded in darkness, nodded towards the back wall, lined with private rooms. They weren’t listening. For all he knew they were setting him up for betrayal. Zane’s message would surely not go unheard for long. Aside from that, there was no scent here for him to follow. Regardless of how Aislyn was practically hovering all over him. All he needed was one touch from her… only one to be able to find her now it was impossible through th
Neither moved for a long while.Derek found himself to be at least a head taller than her which was perfect for cuddling in his mind… if she’d let him that is.Aislyn was always smaller than him though. His wolf, at the time, while lean and narrow, could reach triple his size if they found themselves threatened. It was just in their biology. It translated poorly into how his build was created over the years as an adolescent. Now, as an adult, he’s thickened out as a Beta should. His body looked similar to Zane’s in muscle mass which is why Zane always felt he needed to be more than Derek. Looking like an Alpha as a Beta was not great for pack dynamics. It made a lot of instances awkward. But this… finally standing before Aisl
Honestly, he thought he would be standing in her DJ booth, looking at a bunch of buttons. Instead, she grinned, captured his wrist in her tiny hand that barely circled it, and pulled him back out the door. There the beat thrummed loudly in his head. It was a shock to his senses since being in that clearly sound proofed room. What also shocked him was how Zane’s eyes connected with his own. It was as if Zane knew what room they were in. He wondered for a fleeting second if he gave Aislyn an Alpha command through the door to respond to him, but through the door? Could she scent that?“C’mon Derek,” Aislyn urged him to continue following. When he finally moved his heavy feet, Derek blinked back his concern. He made his decision…again. While he knew this wouldn’t go over well, he knew this was a once
What was it with this place that people had to be up at all hours? Going home to the pack house after a long night was silent usually unless someone’s mate just about had it over something stupid. But this apartment seemed like it was alive all the time. Her stoop was aggressive. Just beyond the foyer was crowded with people just hanging out. Whether they were looking to start their night or end it didn’t matter. Just the fact that they were there and nosy kicked his protective state into higher gear. It bothered him that Aislyn knew and that she dealt with this regularly. “Your kinds’ no good here,'' someone slurred in their direction, and Aislyn only tugged harder on his hand. “It’s not worth it,” she muttered to him.
He’s been here before, Derek knows. He was the one to help her into her own apartment after pulling strings and getting someone to higher her. It wasn’t easy switching during the day or while she was around, but changing her predicament became his number one objective. Her job was simple and kept her away from doing chores that included taking the garbage out. She took orders by phone and dealt with customers for a bakery. It gave her the option to purchase food and feel like she could be more despite growing up as she had. Food wouldn’t be a problem. Work wouldn’t be either. Not with how tenacious she was when he first met her and all.Their first steps out of the threshold of the stairwell and onto her floor said something far different. Sure, she was here, with him, drawing him into her life without even truly knowing who stood beside her and there was a lot t
