Derek, a Beta werewolf, has a secret that is keeping the new Alpha of their pack from claiming his position as pack leader and it has nothing to do with power. Derek has been in love once... but being in love with a human has cost him. Especially when he learned that she had moved on. There was no way to find her. No way to know. His pack never knew why he continuously rejected every she-wolf that came to pass, and he had no reason to bring it up. He didn’t owe them anything. In the months to come, life outside became colder still. When the first snow fell, she wistfully snuggled against his soft fur, nestled comfortably in their bed which now was layered with animal skins and smelled entirely of their combined scents. The forest is unusually still, even while it’s so full of life, of threats… of her. It’s oddly terrifying to be back and unsettled in this unnatural way.
