010 Impasse

Oscar.

When I arrived at Alpha McCain's house, I noticed that the werewolves were taking a defensive stance. They must have thought I had come to fight. I had to let them know that I came in peace, yet they did not relax. I wouldn't blame them. I had killed one of them the night they attacked Karen. They had reasons to be scared and be on their guard. I was ushered to a waiting room, where I was served a drink. I didn't want to drink anything, but I knew I was being watched, so I took a sip.

"He will be joining you soon, Alpha Wilde," McCain's Beta told me in the most respectful way he could manage. The truth was, I had risked my life visiting. All they had to do was kill me, and my pack won't have an Alpha, and then they could take over. Unlike McCain, I had no mate and no offspring. It would be as easy as taking candy from a baby.

I was nervous, but I didn't let it show. I was doing all this for a woman that I did not love, a woman I didn't intend to end up with, a woman I was going to let go of once I was ready to settle down, a woman that would fade into my past in the future. This was the craziest thing I had ever done. I didn't talk to anyone about visiting McCain, so they wouldn't be able to talk me out of it.

Alpha McCain eventually joined me. He smelled of sex, so I knew he had just got some action. I wished I had gotten some action before coming for the meeting.

"Alpha Wilde, welcome to my humble abode," he started, he seemed all bubbly and happy, and I wondered if the pussy was that good.

"Thank you for inviting me," I responded with a smile.

"So do we go straight to business?" he asked, and I nodded.

"Mind telling me why you are here?" he asked, and I raised my eyebrow because he knew exactly why I had come. I decided to play along.

"Your men destroyed an apartment I owned and tried to attack my mistress and me," I said point-blank. The angle I was taking was that of the truce. They had no right to come to my territory unannounced, damage my things and attack my people.

"If you want to put it that way.. " he said, understanding my angle.

"How else should I put it? " I asked him, and he smiled, leaned back in his chair and looked at me.

"You were harbouring a Hunter in your apartment, and to get to her, we had to trespass. You know the wellbeing of everyone trumps the code any day." He pointed out.

"Karen is my employee and my mistress. You should have called for a meeting." I pointed out.

"I am sorry, Wilde, but why should I take permission from you to end a threat?" he asked, and I got pissed off.

"We both know what you did or tried to do was cowardly. Trying to kill a defenceless innocent woman. If you cared so much about our wellbeing, why not go for Giles directly and kill him before he can recruit her? Why not go after the vampire leader before he could recruit her? I know why. It is because, unlike her, they can defend themselves." I said in a calm tone.

I noticed his countenance change which put me on high alert. I must have struck a nerve with him. He looked at me for a while and then relaxed.

"There are many beautiful human women in town. You can have anyone you want. Why her?" he asked me, and I sighed.

"She isn't a threat, McCain, don't create problems where there aren't any." I pleaded. " This girl just got a break. You need to see her; she is harmless. She has no powers and no skills. Have some pity, McCain."

"Her father and grandfather didn't pity us when they tried to eradicate us," he replied.

"And you think killing her will get to them? Someone they don't care about? Someone that was left at the orphanage to rot? Someone that would have ended up on the streets if it weren't for me?" I asked him, and he continued to stare at me.

"Why are you protecting this girl, Wilde? She is just a human being. Hand her over so we can end the Hunter bloodline ones and for all." he said.

"Why do you want to kill her?" I asked him.

"Because she could be used in future," he stated.

"So you want to kill an innocent woman because of the sins you believe she might commit in future? Did you hear yourself? Have you ever met her? Do you know her? She was abandoned by her family. What makes you think they will want her now? She is 25 years old with a mind of her own. How will they be able to use her?" I asked, and he looked at me for a long time.

"It doesn't matter, Wilde; she has to die. She has to pay for her family's crimes. Her grandfather killed my mate when I had just claimed her. I was only nineteen years old, Wilde. Do you know what it means to lose your mate at that age? " he said adamantly.

"I would have had more respect for you if you had gone after the real culprits and not an innocent, harmless woman; I would have supported you. Ever heard of picking on someone your size?" I said, and he stood up in anger.

"You can't come to my home and insult me, Wilde?" he said.

"Then you shouldn't have sent your goons to my apartment uninvited and try to kill my woman," I responded, and he calmed down, realising what he had done was an act of war against my pack. Normally I should have retaliated, but instead, I came to iron things out with him.

"As things are, we are the only ones that know who she is; let's not allow things to escalate beyond this and alert everyone on the matter," I warned him, and he sat down and relaxed.

"I am sorry, Wilde, for attacking your territory, and it won't happen again, but she is fair game if seen elsewhere," he said.

"I am sorry, I can't agree to that. She is with me all the time. Which means I would be attacked most of the time, too," I stated to him, and he stared at me for a long time.

"Do you have to be this difficult?" He asked me, and I smiled.

"It seems we are at an impasse." I pointed out, and he sighed.

"So what do you suggest?" he asked, and I sighed too.

"How about this, You leave her alone. Let's keep her identity between us. And I will be solely responsible for her and her actions." I said, and he arched an eyebrow.

"Solely, you say. Does that mean your pack isn't on board with your plans?" he asked, and I nodded.

"What will happen if she lives up to her name?" he asked, and I bent to look him in the eye and said.

"As her mate, I will personally end her. I swear by my wolf." I promised, and his eyes widened with realisation.
